Hall 17 n the begin- ning there was dark- ness... Then Foundation said unto all in coming freshman: let there be light!!, color, and of course design. However there was still a great void to be filled before students could attain enlightenment. We must fill the space with form someone replied. It’s rumored that the haunting voices of the foundation leaders can still be heard today echoing through the halls of Pratt Studios...”Clay and plaster will thy masters”... Thus the broad concepts of form and of space were boldly put forth for benefit of the foundation masses. Yet there remained an unfilled gap. An underlying need for structure and form, basic lights and darks. Perceiving visual information and directing it on a two dimensional surface. They called it drawing. And so it was then, is now, and ever shall be this way until the very end of time...for Foundation is the cornerstone upon which all our thinking rests. foundation : mi paresis pre a er erarer aver arar ar arairanin eee AVearcl Dyxyien Art Desx STRAINED STRAINED Film Industrial Photography NET WT 3 YRS (6 SEMESTERS: STRAINED Fine Arts NET WT YRS ¢ ORMES! Not so with Pratt. Students and teachers alike in Pratt’s Fine Art departments devote their time and energy to development in a profession, not to a dilletaneish affair with the “easier” (that is, less technological) aspects of education. All is not sweet and light in a graduate’s life, of course, and minor fits of paranoia like “where am I going to find a job?” are bound to occur. Compe- tition in this area can be described as “fierce” (and that is an understatement) but then hopefully for most seniors the discovery of a new color of paint will bring as much joy as a new pair of Yves St. Laurant jeans in years to come. Teaching principles such as educational philosophies and the writing of detailed lesson plans and unit curricula. Miss Smith first put her educational knowledge and theory into practice when she taught at the Saturday Art School program. From there, Miss Smith took a teaching position in a museum-run art education class. This gave her experience in helping to develop the creativity in boys and girls the same age as Dick and Jane. Three basicingre- | people mere players.” , dients are: what is performed, the performance, and the audience. Each ingredient is essential to the other two. What good would the greatest production be without an audience. For that matter what would an audience gain if they were gathered in a theatre, and nothing was performed? (Although judging from personal experience, it would seem that some directors had this in mind!) Theatre is not confined to just the £ stage. In the immortal words of William Shakespeare, ”All the world’s a stage, and all its Theatre exists everywhere; next time you’re at a Pratt disco, look around you—actors, you'll find them everywhere. Theatre is an art a chosen few are given. Here, we “chosen few” have the opportunity to learn by doing. Theatre at Pratt can mean anything: Shakespeare, you can actually take out autographed copies of his plays in the Pratt Library; Dance, which unfortunately is no longer a major, but still teaches excellent courses in ballet, movement, and the Funky Chicken; Cabaret, with people who still think that sheet music is something to listen to while making your bed; and Puppetry, you remember the famed Rubber Plant Lounge shows. Puppet? What is a puppet?
