Sa a RE Pratt is at once a part of the world and a world in itself. Like a scale model of the way bigger places are run, with people in charge and people who work here and people who come to live here. Some of us are here to learn and some to teach. One group earns a living here; the other spends one. As far as most Pratt people are concerned the place is bounded by the athletic field at one end, Erik’s at the other, and Myrtle and DeKalb on the sides. Its depth is the PI Shop and it’s as high as the sky. In most cases Pratt Institute is four years long. en aoe -- oe POE reer v4 pp You are here for yourself. To see things. .- = Pratt is what experimental psychologists might call an open field test—a myriad multiple experience. More than just teachers and blackboard$ and labs and studios, the school exposes you to a good deal of the joys and the woes, the smarts and stupidities of the past and the present. Maybethings happen here you didn’t plan on or you didn’t expect, or you didn’t want. You don’t make too much plaster since it will overcome you. Now I wasn’t playing around with it, I was stirring it. I give it twenty minutes, or five minutes, or ten ...depending on the air temperature. Always keep one hand clean for emergencies. My plaster is well mixed. It’s got to come out good. Under pressure from critics, and de- pressed by the failure to achieve its goals, the column, THERE GOES THE WEEK THAT WENT, has gone. The following was submitted for publication on this matter: During the past semester, you have all noticed and pos- sibly read a column entitled, THERE GOES THE WEEK THAT WENT. This column has been referred to as being childish, vulgar and insulting. The purpose of V.C.W. was to reflect the ridiculous im- age that the PRATT student body presents back into the eyes of the students them- selves. I, or rather V.C.W., had hoped that when the stu- dents saw themselves as they really were, they would mend their mode of conduct. Un- fortunately, nothing seems to upset this dead campus and the walking corpses which inhabit it, to any degree worth noting. The information utilized in the column was, and still is, available to anyone who could see a scant three inches beyond the tip of his nose. What little success the col- umn enjoyed (it did force John Heller to finally write something about Student Government) depended on the requirement that the au- thor remain anonymous. The bartenders know your face and your money and they’ve seen you walk through this door many times late at night and even in afternoons. You get twenty feet in and you see there’s no one you know here. The place is inhabited by freshmen or something and you don’t know them and probably you don’t want to very much. It’s the same here now as in the PI Shop all the time lately— you can’t be sure whether you’ve outgrown the damn thing or you’ve been kicked out of it. You’re above it, or you’ve fallen down under. The places, some of them, they aren’t yours anymore. Something you used to like about these places. All the happy times and faces. Plenty you have learned here, and spent drunken hours singing and laughing and talking loud dizzy drunken words pouring out here some of the greatest things you ever said and heard. And in that PI Shop maybe knew friendliness of faces and calm talk. So Erik’s is the alcoholic PI Shop. But the PI Shop course ends with the realization that it’s all over. While things’ve been good here and for all you found out here you have to move on for the rest. The learn-while-you-laugh and drunken Erik’s talk thing is over, and soon so will be the irresponsibility of being a kid. And it ends with either a bang or a whimper. Your time here shows you the opposites that make a middle way possible. And Pratt is Pratt because of what isn’t here as well as what is. For all it has, it lacks a lot. And the last lesson a school can teach you is its own limitations.
