Henderson G, Lachter On the finished blueprint of our house, a puzzling maze of thin lines and cabalistic symbols run through like a thread; unifying the structure and probing towards the world surrounding it. This is the nervous system, along which electrical impulses flow, acti- vating the vital functions we depend upon so heavily. This is the electrical system. The electrical engineer has given us radio to hear with, television to see with, and the telephone to speak with; he e e has extended man's senses so that his home has ¢ Nn 6 l Nn ¢ ¢ I l iT] 0 become an extension of his body. ; During the short time we have been here at Pratt, our department has kept pace with the ad- vances of industry, adding a new communications laboratory, ‘and expanding the scope of the course, which now offers a complete survey of electrical Bo ar) engineering procedures. mechanical engineering You, the mechanical engineer, have much to contribute to our house. You should more properly be called a human engineer.'’ You give us heat when we are cold, coolness when we are warm; you preserve our food, cook our meals, provide us with transportation, and design the mechanisms that multiply the power in our muscles. The mechanical engineer enables us to adapt to the environment of our home. Mechs all over the place. They dominated the Men's Club in the years B. C. (before Crenshaw}, guzzling cokes and reading daring catalogs, just to snicker at the illustrations. The mechs, as did the other engineer, received a fine cultural background here at Pratt, with such courses as English Literature and uh, English litera- ture.
