Home—home to a bedlam; a maze of poorly ventilated, badly interrelated rooms, conducive to existing, not living. Intelligently designed abodes, combining the best in aesthetic appeal and modern technical development, are the answer to the improvement of living. Pratt Institute, by equipping us with the wonderful tools of technical knowledge, aesthetic appreciation, and an insight into social problems, is providing the world with people prepared and capable of tackling this challenge to human existence. In the architect lies the solution to this problem. We look forward to a future of extraordinary achievement in the field of fine housing for all. inferior design Along with the architect, who else has a more vital part in the preliminary layout and design of our house but the interior designer? With the need for expanding our cities and industrial areas, the never ending erection of shops, churches, schools and other public buildings, ihe interior designer takes up the challenge and beauti- fies our lives. The practical and creative are combined | nd | ye in his contemporary approach to building. The interior designer, whether he is dealing with the merchandising of interior furnishings or the creation of complete in- teriors, forsees the essentials for comfort and function and transforms blueprints and plans into reality. The members of our household are indeed grateful to him for adding to the enjoyment of living. J. Ambrose M. Aranoff G. Baer A. Brulhardt L. Butler R. Coulombe D. Engle F. Failla E. Ferencik M. Look around our house and notice the newspapers, magazines, and catalogs all evidence of the good training, good taste, and good judgment which the advertising designer needs to project his ideas. In our stores, theatres, public buildings, subways, busses; along our highways, trademarks and slogans, colorful labels and symbols make their indelible impression. With great ingenuity, the artist creates a pictorial idea that induces us to investigate these products. Through his power of visualization and technique, these products become welcome additions to our comfort and happiness. Students of art education, having assimi- lated a well-rounded program of cultural and technical subjects, go forth to exert their influence on the future consumers of culture. Adults, as well as children, who include in their daily diet a portion of music, literature, painting, and the allied arts, are assured of a better balanced diet and richer, more enjoyable living. Littell Through a thorough study of lines, planes, volumes; light, texture, and color, the industrial designer combines function and eye appeal. The result is streamlined living from pencil sharpener to locomotive. Sound reasoning, by an artist- designer with an engineering and production viewpoint, turns the most uninspiring objects into works of art. Just look around our house for the results of his aesthetic inven- tion. Refrigerators, gas ranges, radiators, lighting fixtures, cooking utensils are just a few of the products which con- tribute to the comfort and beauty of living. As Mr. Kostel- low so aptly stated, ''Industrial design is the art which enters every home in one form or another, be it a glass or a lamp, a flat-iron or a washing machine. As designers, we express our todays and build the taste of the tomorrows. K. Spencer R. Vervzerc J. Syvertsen S. Thorwaldsen ee tiehe: ae Se Our housewife works in a lively and cheerful atmosphere, provided by the excitingly patterned wallpaper on the walls. A cooling, soothing wallpaper in the bedroom paves the way to greater relaxation, the drapes in the living room give an atmosphere of comfort and warmth through appropriate color schemes. Colorfully patterned clothing, walls, drapes, tablecloths, and gift wrappings all have an important effect upon our mood of living. Many highly trained designers must turn out these materials, carefully created with scientific precision and taste, calculated to set the atmosphere of our ideal home. It is to this field that Pratt contributes many well qualified artists who constantly strive to enrich our lives with their magic patterns and colors. H. Ferro L. Holliday M. Maurer K. Here are housed attractively styled and well-cut garments to be wornrwith poise, assurance and grace by the members of our family. Color, line, proportion and design are scientifically and creatively combined to produce the artistic product. There is vast opportunity for the crea- tive mind and hand in the field of Clothing Design. Knowledge of the human figure is fundamental, but there are numerous varia- tions and each presents multiple outlets for creative and artistic expression. Whether it be in the privacy of the home or at a public or social function, much satisfaction can be realized from wearing an attractive, well made garment. Our relationship to the egg, for example, is more than the title of a book. We grow to respect and admire this small entity which has the amazing ability of turning itself into a golden, fluffy omelet. A real bit of creative activity! The human body, it is known, does not perform satisfactorily on fresh air and food; particular foods and special combinations of these foods are found to be most effective. We become acquainted with the combinations which prevent scurvy, pel- lagra and rickets; the intricacies of the Vitamin B family are explored. On the tastier side we learn the best way to treat a roast and become ac- quainted with the vast possibilities of cake dough. The supervision of restaurants, cafeterias, school lunchrooms becomes of the responsibility of well- trained food managers. It is not just food on the table and furniture in the living room, but an atmosphere of understanding and love which is essential to hap- piness. A home so furnished, no matter how humble, is a source of great satisfaction to its inhabitants. The future of our country and the world may well depend on the structure of our family group. We are becoming increasingly aware of the overwhelming problems entailed in the growing up of our children. The development of happy, outgoing personalities is aided by providing them with emotional and affectional security. An orderly, efficiently run home leaves time and energy which can be devoted to recreational and cultural interests, giving the family members a richer, broader experience and assuring well- balanced living. home economics M. He was not there long before he evolved in his brain the idea that a few articles of apparel would come in handy. Thus, Adam began the practice of utilizing the pelts of animals for clothing, thereby establishing one of the oldest of industries, the manufacture of leather. Imagine if you can a home, a community, a world without leather! Our books lie torn and limp. Many feet are bruised and broken. Father with no wallet or briefcase, mother minus her pocketbook, salesmen without luggage, trousers and no belts! Pratt, answering the cries from industry, established the only tanning school in the Western Hemisphere. Thus, we are assured of bound books standing bold and straight, citizens walking erect and proud. Our twentieth century tanners carry on in the footsteps of Adam, making their vital contribution to our homes and lives. Weer Nyngan) ae Ses Nu how x Z wortge Z ae g bso Jb foe we the. Far be it from Pratt to be niggardly about the whole thing. We brag of three such authorities to which we are answerable. President Pratt and the Institute's administrative council remain unques tionably our final and supreme authority. The Student Government Association acts as a liaison between the student body and the Institute authorities. The primary purpose of SGA, to quote its constitution, is ''to promote the welfare of the students in general, to furnish a medium of expression of student opinion, and to further student activities.’ The Executive Board, because it is the governing body of SGA and because it works in a representative capacity, uses its power to act for the student body in the formation and enforcement of their policies. Additional SGA organizational work and authority is delegated to the standing committees and governing councils of each class. The Department of Student Life is another institution in our or- ganizational setup that has proven itself invaluable to the students. The department not only maintains a counseling service, health office, and employment service, but also serves as sanctuary for any student problems. If you are down to your last dollar, flunking out of school, or merely nursing some new and unique maladjustment, the Office of Student Life is your answer. Waltzing in for a weed and a bullsession with Miss Townley or Miss Stevenson was one of our most highly endorsed, highly prized and popular practices. Civity When, in the course of our routine life, we find that our house is merely an empty shell, we will open our eyes to the entity that transforms a house to a home, namely the department of utter contu- sion, the family; in our case, the student body. The family's entertaining squad, the Playshop, is the happy home of aspiring actors, stage-set designers, prop men, kibitzers, and those who are either down- right gregarious or very curious. The members present a minimum of two productions yearly and play a major part with SGA in organizing the Winter Festival Cere- monies. The group's most successful production this year was ‘You Can't Take It With You,” the theme of which was not only pertinent to our family, but down- right apropos. Pratt, in its own unique manner, has become a home for its homogeneous crew of engineers, art- ists, home economists, costume designers, tanners, and librarians. The spirit of the home is exemplitied by these members who, however varied their voca- tional aims may be, work together in several unity- ing ways. Where the central authority of an average home would rest with the parents, in this case the respon- sibility lies on the shoulders of the Student Gov- erning Association and the Office of Student Lite. Our paternally minded SGA, with the interests of his family in mind, lays down the law and makes decisions for the group as a whole in a democrati- cally representative manner. Meanwhile, the Office of Student Life stands by, hovering like the pro- verbial mother hen over her brood of little chickens, always there when help is needed and gently try- ing to further the social interests of her more so- cial'y retarded or indifferent offspring. So with a family set up such as that, our student body, like any other family of headstrong ingrates, blithely follows its own course, It does so in the rumpus room of our house. The lounge, a compara- tively new addition to the house, is unquestionably the most popular goldbrick sanctuary ever devised. The lounge typifies our family by the industry of its habitues. Some will be eating, others dancing, playing bridge or ping-pong; not to mention the characters that grace the place with their presence to either study, wish they were studying or wish they were somewhere else. To bind these groups together, we have the special breed of table hop- pers who, with every good intention in mind, take off for a class and are inevitably delayed every three feet to stop and pay homage to another social circle. So much for the rumpus room delin- quents. The Foreign Students Club, a quest room to our house, is an unofficially organ- ized group sponsored by the Office of Student Life. Oven ten countries have been represented in the club this year. Inter- collegiate social meetings have been held throughout the year to acquaint the mem- bers with students from other schools and various social functions are held. Three other divisions of the household, equally important to our social structure are the Men's Club, the Women's Club and the Veteran's Residence Club. The Men's Club is primarily the haven for engi- neering students during the day. This fact is obvious to anyone who has ever invaded the sanctum during the lunch hour and ob- served the happy confusion of said speci- mens of humanity piled three deep and over. The club's facilities are open to all students at stated intervals during the week. The Prattler, the family spokesman and school paper, lets its presence be known about the campus with biweekly editions hot off the press. A balanced blend of the Daily News and the New York Times, the Prattler came to blows with Father SGA this year when it was kicked out of its private room above the lounge to accommodate new family members, To date, the Prattler is still nursing its wounded pride. This, by the way, was one vignette of Pratt family life that belonged in the famiiy skeleton closet. The Pratt Glee Club is open to all musically and otherwise inclined members of the student family who care to attend the meetings regularly. The club presents its annual Christmas Concert and formal dance and a Spring Concert during the year, and its members participate at all social functions where musical talent is needed. The Women's Club, a gracious mansion turned over to the school by President Pratt, houses a number of freshman girls. The rooms on the first floor are available for student meetings, parties and other entertaining occasions. The Veteran's Residence Club, consisting of the eighty freshmen as well as numerous married vets with families, is an organized group with an execu- tive council representing each school. The pr imary aim of the club is to further the spirit of congeniality and fraternity among its members and to provide a healthy atmosphere in which to live and study. One member com- mented: ''The meetings are merely military bull sessions with a little parlia- mentary form sneaked in here and there. About once a week, numerous disgruntled students will be disp'aced from their roosts in the lounge to make way for the Bridge Club's weekly tourna- ment. The club was organized for the enjoyment of those addicted to Pratt's most famous time-consuming vice as well as to help them improve their game. Other clubs are departmental in nature and include such worthwhile groups as Advertising Designers, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Home Economics Club, Eastern Arts Association, and the Institute of Radio Engineers.
