Throughout all the high school years. this class has been considered one of the most outstand- ing. The class was divided into ten different committees. The committees and committe chairmen were: Commence- ment, Margaret Mongerg Publications, Barbara Jacobsg Announcements, Don Fraizerg Finance, Mark K. Roseli- usg Social, JoAnn Baker, Mum Day, Rita Krehbiel Kingg Senior Play, Velma Blythe, Hobo Day, Dick Way, Senior Class Day, Ed Maagg Cap and Gown, Bob Hodges. The Social committee planned two parties this year, one a Hill Billy party, that went over with a bang.7' The girls wore old dresses and sunbonnets, while the boys wore jeans and boots. Admission to the party was a penny for every inch of waistline, the amount not ex- ceeding twenty-five cents. The other event was a Christ- mas party where everyone came a bit 'sdressed upf, Green and red crepe paper draped to the sides of the auditorium and a large tree decorated by the seniors gave everyone the Christmas feeling. The traditional Mum Day and 5'Skip Dayii were ob- served again this year by the seniors. The majority of the class were pretty well painted up', on Muni Day. Most of the seniors spent Skip Day' in Wichita having a good time. The play given was a three-act comedy entitled When l Was Green. The cast consisted of fourteen seniors. six boys and eight girls. We say, Hats off to the class of '-18. Class sponsors were Mr. J. R. Gray, Miss Edith Mc- Mullen. Miss Reba Holloway. and Mr. H. C. C . in Page Tuentx-.Wine Coach Smith then began training his boys for the coming tilt with the Great Bend Black Panthers. The Panthers had been scouted previously and the Greens knew that senior Dean Wells would be their main threat. This threat proved true as he broke through the line for three of their four touchdowns. When the smoke cleared, the score stood at I2-26 with the Greens on the short end, but the game was one of the best in the league as the Greens battled fiercely all the way. It was no one's game till the final gun sounded. The attendance at this game topped all games of the season. Great Bend went on to be one of the undefeated teams in the state. In their non-league game with the Liberal Redskins, the Green and the Red battled it out on the Greens' home territory until the hnal gun gave the game to the home team by a score of 26-0. The Redskins played a clean, hard game and proved that they might well afford some compe- tition if admitted to the Southwest Kansas League. The Greens next journed to the lair of the Lawrence Lions to grapple with the twice undefeated gridders of the university city. The Greens had trained long and hard for this game and planned to gain some valuable experience even if they were unable to conquer them. Although the Lions proved too powerful for the Greenback squad, it gave the under- class members of the squad some of the experience they will be sure to need next year when several slots in the team will be empty due to graduation. The Greens were unable to score against the Lions and in the end, felt the impact of a 32-0 score. While in Lawrence the team witnessed the battle between the Kansas Jayhawks and the Missouri Tigers and saw many interesting sights on the campus of Kansas University. As a reward for their services during the season this trip was financed by the athletic fund. ,aww .ww 1234.3 Pictured at left. top to bottom. are lf. J. Nlcfluire. Bob Blasi. Bill Keller. The weather for this occasion was exceptionally fair and warm and the game went quite well as the Greens again and again held the Demons out of scoring territory. while they themselves were able to roll up a total of 25 points and clinch the game. During halftime ceremonies. amid cheering and confetti from the crowd. Wanda Dikeman was crowned Football Queen and reigned on her green and white throne for the remainder of the game. ln the procession were three convertible coupes which were used to carry the queen and all her many attendants to the throne. Following the custom of years gone by the losing captain forfeited his shoes to Dick Way. the winning captain. and was escorted off the field barefoot. In their league standing the Greens ranked second on the list. needing only a win from Great Bend to bring that long sought trophy home once again. This is Great Bend's second consecutive year as Southwest Kansas League champions. Those graduating who were on this year's squad include: Bob Spicer. Bill Hunter. Ben Frantz, Captain Dick Way, Co-Captain Bob Blasi, Bill Keller. Ed Maag. Carrol Winfrey. Winford Wilson. Wayne Costello, E. J. Xlc-Guire, Clarence Johnson. and Fred Harzman. Manager.
