TREASURE TH JO RNEY F RWARD By Jill Lowe As the Prairie View graduating class of 1988 tromped off to kindergarten 13 years ago, graduation was a concept they were not yet familiar with. Back in 1975 our main concerns were who our teacher would be, who had the best crayons, and whether or not recess was long enough. Progressing through grade school we learned many basic skills needed in every day life, such as reading, writing and aritlunetic. Each new school year built on these skills and added more to our knowledge. As we neared the com- pletion of grade school, we had not only acquired many scholastic skills, but many social skills as well. We had learned how to make friends, and were becoming keenly aware of the opposite sex. Entering Jr. High was an exciting and scary experience. Mastering locker combinations, and remembering our class schedule and where to go was often very taxing. After settling into the routine at 'P.V., however, we could relax and enjoy Jr. High life. We were becoming more aware of graduation, but still cou1dn't quite grasp this seem- ingly far-off concept. Popularity and going together were our major con- cerns at this point in our lives. As freshmen we often made the com- ment, Four more years - it seems like forever! During those four years we encountered many experiences: The task of mastering our homework and classes, the pride of making the honor roll, the thrill of victory and agony of defeat experienced in sports, the excitement of dating, the sweet feel- ing of falling in love, the many tears sh- ed when a relationship didn't work out, and all the many great and unforget- table times shared with friends - friends that will last a lifetime. As we finally reached our senior year, feelings of anticipation and anxie- ty reeled into our brains. The thought of graduation was now very real - ex- citing, scary and sad too. After gradua- tion, we would have to depart from the many dear friends we had made during high school, and would be out on our own, trying to succeed in college and in life. Prevailing over these feelings, though, were the feelings of satisfaction and pride in having successfully com- pleted 13 years of schooling. 1 From these 13 years, we have ac- quired the vast amounts of knowledge, scholastic and social skills that will enable us to succeed in life. Along with these skills, we each carry with us many fond memories of special times shared with special friends that will last a lifetime. The high school years are truly some of the best years of one's life.
