Special Olympics. Exactly what is it? Who does it involve? What do these peo- ple do? Special Olympics is probably the least recognized and least understood of all the athletic programs at PV. How- ever, person for person, pound for pound, they are the most productive, hardest working and most travelled of any of the other teams. Like in other sports, Special Olym- pics has three season - fall, volleyball, winter, basketball, and spring, track. Many of the athletes compete in in- dividual skills contests also. The teams QSQM 4 Special 1 mpic O Athletes Bring Home Honors even sport their own award - winning cheerleading squad. Even though they already have enough trophies, medals and ribbons to make any athletic team jealous, coaches Cheryl Kratzberg, Beth Smith and Dick Booe poured on the pressure again this year and watched as their athletes brought home still more awards. To say that PV was well represented by these young people would be a vast understatement. These athletes travel to Pittburg, Hayes, Wichita and Topeka to compete. They joined the national champion KU Jayhawks in Lawrence for a basketball clinic. They've even competed at the Coach Smith, along with volleyballers Tonya Dilley and Jeff Castleberry, a 1987 graduate, competed in the Interna- tional Summer Olympics, held at Notre Dame University in Indiana. Smith's volleyball team took gold medal honors, defeating Great Britain and Ohio in the final rounds. One of the big- gest smiles in all of Kansas, though, belonged to Tonya Dilley as she brought home a silver medal in individual skills competition. In spite of all the awards and recogni- tion, the ultimate goal. of the Special Olympics is a very simple one - to be accepted as a part of the athletic pro- gram and gain the respect that is given KU Relays. However, the highlight of the entire Special Olympics Athletic program occurred last summer as PROUD 'PEfMl'A W 0, Srfomzoifrr to other athletes. After all, they are athletes competing against other athletes. It's that simple. i ..... X My il? Q gg f a ' Q if Q S i 'lv fs 'Y ,ig tiki?
