JUST HORSIN by Jill Lowe Fun! Excitement! Competition! These are some of the things High School Rodeo offers. HS Rodeo is a demanding sport too, as Mark Driskell, Kristie Clearwater, Jill Lowe, Angie Camerer, and Nikki Jones will emphatically agree. These determin- ed PV students practice hour upon hour and travel many miles to succeed in their sport. To be a competitor in this sport these five students must be dedicated not only to daily practice, but to keeping up their grades as well. To be eligible to com- pete in HS Rodeo they must pass five of their seven classes. Mark, Kristie, Jill, Angie, and Nikki put in many hours on the road hauling to the twenty qualifying rodeos held throughout the state at Concordia, Plainville, Topeka, Dodge City, Kingman, Lakin, McPherson, Medicine Lodge, Scott City, and Burl- ington. To make it to State Finals, which are held in Topeka, the rodeo athletes must gain points in their events by placing in the top ten at the qualifying rodeos or by competing in at least half of these rodeos. At State they compete for double the points to determine the top four rodeo com- petitors in each event who will represent Kansas at the National HS Rodeo Finals in Pueblo, Colorado at the end of July. The competition level in HS Rodeo is top notch. Each competitor is determined to do his or her best. This determination creates Champions. The State and Na- tional I-IS Rodeo Finals are often as com- petitive and exciting as the Pro Rodeo Finals. All the hard work, dedication, and travel time rodeo competitors invest does pay off. Awards such as horse blankets, trophy buckles and trophy saddles are given at the State and National Finals. The chance to compete at Nationals is the experience of a lifetime. Rodeo athletes who do well at the State and National levels are often awarded healthy rodeo scholarships. But regardless of whether you win or lose, the competition and comradery give a great sense of self-satisfaction. The friends one makes and the memorable times they share last a lifetime. Spring, summer, and fall find Stephanie Coones and Brad Heide traveling the American Paint Horse Association circuit, showing their horses every weekend in many different places throughout Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. The competitors in the APHA are ranked from one to twenty with points ac- cumulated in their twenty best circuit shows to determine who will make it to the APHA World Wide Congress Show held in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Stephanie and Brad show in halter, western, English, tim- ed event and trail classes to earn as many points as they can towrds the APHA All- Around, In order to gain Na- tional Championship titles, a showman must earn 16 halter oints 50 western and English ed event or trail points. Throughout the many years Stephanie has been showing, she has won eight of these titles on Wight different horses. Brad has won two in the few years he has been showing. In 1986 Stephanie placed 8th in the top twenty in the All-Around, and was the Reserve Champion in English Equitation at the World Show. In 1987 she was awarded se- cond place in Western Pleasure. Brad won Reserve Champion Senior Mare in halter at the APHA World in 1986, and in 1987 placed eighth in the Nation in the All- Around. Along with the thrill of winning such prestigious titles, Stephanie has been awarded three trophy saddles and numberous trophy belt buckles. Brad has won two saddles and many belt buckles P 1 points combined, and five tim- as well.
