Band-Stage Band GRE'I'I'A CLINE The PV band department had a busy and rewarding year. Both timeless traditions and new experiences enhanced the band member's playing ability by supplying op- portunities to display and excercise their talents. The marching band had an especially successful season. They were awarded a lst division trophy at the Pittsburg State University Band Day Parade. According to director Nate Wisdom, this was the first time PV band had received such a high honor in that event. The band also march- ed in the American Royal Parade and the La Cygne Fiesta. During the football season, the marching band was busy entertaining the crowd with pre-game and half-time performances at every home game. The band went on the road for one football performance: Louisburg High School invited PV to per- form with them at one of their games. The band performed jointly and separately. Wisdom thought the performance went ex- ceptionally well. He commented, The kids did an excellent job representing PV. It was superb. To raise interest in grade school students, the band toured at the La Cygne, Parker, and Fontana Elementary Schools. Other activities included concerts at the La Cygne Tree Lighting Ceremony and the .Christmas and Spring concerts at PV. These concerts allowed the community to enjoy the bands in a setting other than ball games. Several students received special honors throughout the year. Sophmores Jeff Russell and Jodie Long were chosen for the district band. Stacey McGee, Christy Long, Jodie Long and Kim Bergman were selected for Four State Band sposored by PSU. Jeff Russell and Christy Long were chosen to participate in the State Music Festival in Andover after receiving I ratings at contest. Toward the end of the year when most people were ready for summer and all the sun and fun that goes along with it, band members were still hard at work. Kansas City Kansas Community College hosted a band competition on April 12. To prepare for this event, a band clinician was brought in to work with the students. Don Shaffer, the band director at Center High School in KCMO, stayed with the students for two hours. During that time, the students received valuable advice and hints for their performance. The high school band students for the 1987-88 school year were as follows: FLUTES - Christy Long, Mary Moylan, Karri Pearce and Paula Rowe, CLARI- NETS - Stacey McGee, Heather Weir, Leanna DeGruson, Amy Boydston, Dustin Stwalley and Shelly Mullani fDrum Ma- jorettelg BASS CLARINETS - Jodie Long, and Kim Bergman, SAXOPHONES - Collette Hardesty and Justin Roberts, TRUMPETS - Keith Beattie, Daryl Davis and Mike Nickell, TROMBONES - Kelly Northern, Eric Stanley and Camri Sam- ple, BARITONE - Ida Kennedy, TUBA - Jeff Russell, PERCUSSION - Christy Thorton, Dean Stwalley and Michelle Meitler. The Stage Band is a unique part of PV's band department. This group performs as an elite group of some of the most talented musicians of PV. It consists of: SAX- OPHONES - Stacey McGee, Kathy Kirkpatrick, Justin Roberts and Steve Mc- Cammon, TRUMPETS - Keith Beattie, Daryl Davis, Mike Nickell and Jeff Hamp- ton, TROMBONE - Camri Sample, DRUMS - Jared Warrick, BASS KEYBOARD - Joe Jackson, PIANO - Jennifer Kriley. They, too, had an active year. They per- formed at several home basketball games and performed at both the Christmas and Spring concerts. The highlight of their season was their annual Christmas tour. They first entertained the patients and staff of the Osawatomie State Hospital and then traveled to Oak Park Mall in Overland Park. After a successful year in concert and parade attendance, the band department is anticipating continued success in the 1988-89 school year. To : Michelle Meitler and - P Lori Polley perform a bell and Xylophone duet. DR Rightzleanne DeGruson, Amy Boydston and Stacey McGee play in the morning homecom- ing coronation practice. l4!
