Dr. Curtis A. Wood The 1988-89 yearbook staff has chosen to dedicate this issue of Pardus to Dr. Wood. Dr. Wood spent many dedicated hours on the yearbook even after his retirement in 1984. Dr. Wood was born in Cotton Plant, Arkansas and attended the local schools there. Upon graduation he attended Knoxville College receiving a B.A. in English, French and Sociology and New York University for a B.A. in Education Administration. He attended Columbia University Teachers College and attained a M.A. in Health and Physical Education and received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in the field of Health Education and Community Services. Until his retirement, Dr. Wood headed public relations and publication services for Prairie View’s College News Service, including supervision of faculty publications and sports information services. He was executive committee member of the trustees of the American College of Public Relations and a board member of the San Bernard Electric Cooperative, Inc. He worked 10 years on the National Safety Council and also served in the past as a Prairie View city councilman and a member of the local chamber of commerce. Dr. Wood was a former chairman of the Waller County Health Council, the local Red Cross, American Cancer Society and Boy Scouts of America. He was the recipient of an outstanding service award for the youth of Texas. Several scholarships have been awarded in his name for the last several years. Dr. Wood taught undergraduate and graduate courses in health education, safety education and community relations, and served as a consultant to schools throughout Texas in developing school-community health programs. He initiated a nutrition education program in several Texas schools. Dr. Wood is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lou Lee W ood and six children: Curtis A. W ood, Jr. and Garland W ood of New York, Craig W ood of Prairie View, Barbara Harrison of W ashington, DC and Beth Serrakian and Gina W ood of San Francisco. No matter how pressing his schedule was, he always had time for a friendly chat and a word of encouragement. We miss him. Introduction
