A s cf cP Renaissance Of Academic Excellence 1878 -1988 110th ANNIVERSARY PRAIRIE VIEW A M UNIVERSITY AMMIVERSARY RENAISSANCE CELEBRATION November 10-13, 1988 The purpose of the Renaissance Celebration was to celebrate the outstanding contributions made by Prairie View A M University over the past I 10 years. All those who made a significant contribution to the university were recognized. The University celebration brought together all of the university's constituents to celebrate the renaissance , with significant events planned to incorporate all of those constituents in the celebration. The focus of the festivities was the dedication of the new $ 16 million library, where a new exhibition on the history of the black military was on display. The significance of the celebration was to increase the public awareness of Prairie View A M University's contributions, to encourage support, and to help the university fulfill its constitutional mandate of becoming an institution of the first class. Introduction 5 Coleman Cuts Ribbons To Library s N PRog % Renaissance ‘ °f Academic ‘E?(ceuence 1878-1988 PRAIRIE VIEW A M UNIVERSITY ith a few brief words, Texas A M Regent John B. Coleman cut the ribbons to a new Library bearing his name before hundreds of guests at Prairie View A M University. The dedication of the five-story library concluded week-long ceremonies marking Prairie View’s 110th Anniversary. “You've given me the greatest honor anyone could have given to me by naming this library-after me,” Coleman said to members of the Texas board of Regents and to the administration of Prairie View. The day began with a homecoming convocation honoring students for service and Coleman for his contributions to Prairie View, Texas A M and to higher education. Texas state Senator Craig Washington, a 1966 PV graduate, praised the work of Coleman as he gave the convocation address. “The most gratifying thing for me is to drive up (U.S.) 290 from Waller and sec the John B. Coleman Library rising from the top of the hill, Washington said of the new building. “We know without your leadership. Prairie View would not be what it is today.” Other dignitaries applauding Coleman, the first black regent on the Texas A M Board of Regents, included Dr. Percy Pierre, president of Prairie View, former regent Joe Richardson and A M Chancellor Perry Adkisson. “Of all the buildings on the campus, the library is the core, Pierre said. “Prairie View has the honor of being the site of such a tribute to John Coleman and the contributions he has made to the state. “You can dream, aspire, be all you want to be. the sky’s the limit, Adkisson added. John Coleman has done that for higher education in the state of Texas.” The John B. Coleman Library will seat 1400 students. It contains 220,000 volumes and can hold more than 500,000. Among the other features are an archives and special collections section on the fifth floor, an art gallery, a lecture auditorium, a cultural events center and an accelerated learning center built from federal education funds. The library will also be the home of the works of LtCol (ret) Jesse Johnson on black contributions to the military and a collections of paintings from Hazel Biggers. presented by Coleman’s wife Gloria. Later, a portrait of Coleman will be commissioned and hung inside the main foyer. Coleman was very moved by the dedication and could only muster a few words of appreciation, but the words were more than enough. I’m here to pledge to you I intend to contribute the rest of my life to higher education and this institution in particular. Introduction DEDICATION Dr. Curtis A. Wood Introduction “He Is Not Dead” I can’t say, and I won’t say That he is dead, lie is just away. With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand. He has wandered into an unknown land And left us dreaming how very fair It needs must be, since he lingers there. And you — oh, you, who the wildest yearn For an old time step, and the glad return. Think of him faring on, as dear In the love of There as the love of Here Think of him still as the same. I say. He is not dead. He is just away. — James Whitcomb Riley Dr. Curtis A. Wood The 1988-89 yearbook staff has chosen to dedicate this issue of Pardus to Dr. Wood. Dr. Wood spent many dedicated hours on the yearbook even after his retirement in 1984. Dr. Wood was born in Cotton Plant, Arkansas and attended the local schools there. Upon graduation he attended Knoxville College receiving a B.A. in English, French and Sociology and New York University for a B.A. in Education Administration. He attended Columbia University Teachers College and attained a M.A. in Health and Physical Education and received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in the field of Health Education and Community Services. Until his retirement, Dr. Wood headed public relations and publication services for Prairie View’s College News Service, including supervision of faculty publications and sports information services. He was executive committee member of the trustees of the American College of Public Relations and a board member of the San Bernard Electric Cooperative, Inc. He worked 10 years on the National Safety Council and also served in the past as a Prairie View city councilman and a member of the local chamber of commerce. Dr. Wood was a former chairman of the Waller County Health Council, the local Red Cross, American Cancer Society and Boy Scouts of America. He was the recipient of an outstanding service award for the youth of Texas. Several scholarships have been awarded in his name for the last several years. Dr. Wood taught undergraduate and graduate courses in health education, safety education and community relations, and served as a consultant to schools throughout Texas in developing school-community health programs. He initiated a nutrition education program in several Texas schools. Dr. Wood is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lou Lee W ood and six children: Curtis A. W ood, Jr. and Garland W ood of New York, Craig W ood of Prairie View, Barbara Harrison of W ashington, DC and Beth Serrakian and Gina W ood of San Francisco. No matter how pressing his schedule was, he always had time for a friendly chat and a word of encouragement. We miss him. Introduction Power Play A term used in hockey when a personal penalty has been committed towards a player on the opposite team. The foulee. the person whom the foul was committed against, is then entitled to a one-on-one confrontation with the goalee. The player's objective is to get the hockey puck in the net. Ironically, this is a perfect term that depicts the heritage of Prairie View A M University. In this case, however. Prairie View A M University (PVA MU) is competing in the arena against its opponent-NEGATIVE STEREOTVPISM. Prairie View's heritage has been distorted by the assumption from outsiders, such as the media and other universities, that since the school is a historically black institution, it is incapable of pro iding a quality education for its students. PVA MU however, has the opportunity to become the victor in this one-on-one confrontation. Its strategy involves all of its great accomplishments, such as establishing the first black honor's college, producing the highest number of minority engineers in Texas, establishing the first full-fledged, active Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Program at a Historically Black University and producing the highest number of black pre-med graduates and also the producer of the highest percentage rate in Texas of pre-med students accepted into medical school. When PVA MU's strategic plan is put into action it is sure to dominate the opponent. And, with society as the audience witnessing the victory, the truth will be known that Prairie View A M University is an institution of the first class and is a “PRODUCER OF PROUD, PRODUCTIVE PEOPLE . From the President of the university, Dr. Percy A. Pierre to all the various departments and Colleges Prairie View A M University prides itself on producing productive people. The university is composed of seven colleges: College of Applied Science and Engineering Technology, College of Arts and Sciences, Benjamin Banneker Honors College, College of Business, College of Education, College of Engineering, and the College of Nursing; which is centrally located in heart of the Texas Medical Center located in Houston, Texas. The university has a successful Graduate School also. The Administration, Faculty and Staff secretaries greatly contribute to the making of the first class university that Prairie View has and will live up to. The term “STUDENT LIFE” referred to just about everything that took place over the course of the year. From the “hangout” on the “yard” to the concerts and pageants that entertained the students. This year these events exploded with the pride of Prairie View in POWER PLAY. The homecoming events were extra special with the 110th Anniversary of Prairie View A M University. The concerts that rock the campus attracted a lot of outside interest. The annual Mr. Miss Prairie View A M University Scholarship Pageants gave the students a chance to see some of the best looking and most talented males and females on campus. The Art, Music and Drama Department presented plays by the award winning Charles Gilpin Players, music from the University Choir, Symphonic and Marching Bands, student music recitals and the performing artists series. The Classic Dance Ensemble, the Panther Kittens and University Majorettes provided a variety of dance movements for campus entertainment, not tomention the Baptist Student Movement musicals and all the other fashion and talent shows that best expressed the pride of PANTHERLAND. Famous Faces During The Renaissance Donald Bogle “Black Women in Entertainment” was the multi-media presentation topic of Bogle. In his “Brown Sugar” presentation, Bogle takes a poignant, affectionate and analytical look at black female entertainers, on stage and off. Whether he's discussing Josephine Baker’s giddy stardom in Paris in the 20’s, Lena Horne’s Hollywood fame in the 40’s, or Billie Holiday’s problems and troubles in the 50’s, he uncovers not only the tensions, but triumphs of the black female performer in her bid for stardom. Included in this presentation are rare and exciting visuals and discussion? on Ethel Waters, Dorothy Dandridgc, Eartha Kitt, gir groups like The Supremes and other top stars, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Grace Jones, Dionne Warwick Patti Labclle, and current pop divas Whitney Houston anc Janet Jackson, to name just a few. 26 Student Life “Every student should be pushed to their optimum potential” Dr. Beverly Cole is currently the director of education for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The primary goal of this organization is to ensure equal access to quality, integrated education for minority children. Dr. Cole spoke on education in the black and white colleges. She stated that there are more black students in ratio to black teachers. She emphasized that teachers should teach test taking techniques. Prior to joining the NAACP, she served as the projected coordinator for the cultural awareness training program at UCLA and as a research consultant in California. He has performed in several off broadway Student Life Celebrating The Renaissance With Entertainment CSSIE DAVIS, EIJEy IEEE Bring Explosive Talent To Campus The legendary greats of stage and screen, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, performed in the llobart-Taylor Recital Mall in conjunction with Prairie View’s 110th Anniversary Celebration. The stage on which they performed was decorated with three banners of purple and gold displaying our anniversary theme “Partners in Progress '88: A Renaissance in Academic Excellence”. Placed in front of the banners were two armchairs, a small table and two stands from which the duo read at times. The set was extremely effective in creating a relaxed atmosphere. The audience was mesmerized as they absorbed a thought provoking blend of poetry, prose and dramatic monologues written by some of our most prolific black authors. Denzel Washington Actor Evans Denzel Washington and Actor Evans visited the campus of PV. Among Washington’s film credits are “A Soldier’s Story”, “Cry Freedom” and “The Mighty Quinn”. The Boys Choir of Harlem performed on campus while celebrating their 20th anniversary. Texas (Vocal) Rachelle' Collette Fisher Rachelle' is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Fisher, Sr. She is a native of Las Vegas, Nevada. A junior pursuing a degree in architecture, she desires to become a successful lawyer of architecture. Some of her accomplishments include being Miss American Institute of Architecture Students, an All-American Academic Scholar, producing the Miss Black UNLV Pageant, being a member of the Architecture Honors Club, the National Society of Black Engineers, the Society of Women Engineers, and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She has also received an Outstanding Design Student Award and a competitive scholarship from the College of Engineering. Her hobbies include reading, writing and sports with a special interest in water skiing. The year 1987 was embarked upon by the First Annual Mr. Prairie View A M University held on the 28th day of April in the Memorial Student Center Ballrooom. The purpose of this contest was to honor those men whose footprints stepped in the direction of success, leadership, and excellence; men of great caliber who possessed such qualities and leadership characteristics that made them worthy enough to be “Lord over Pantherland and hold such a prestigious title as Mr. Prairie View A M University . Although the other contestants were competitive and the sands appeared a little quickening at times, Mr. Ricky Valentino LaFontaine was selected as the winner, thus becoming the first Mr. Prairie View A M University. During the exploration of this New Dimension , the university yearbook department discovered that Mr. Prairie View A M University would not only serve as an honor to men of this outstanding university, but also to women by serving as the official escort for Miss Prairie View A M University. Hence, it was Mr. Homer L Smith, Jr. of Dallas, Texas the 1988 Mr. Prairie View A M University, who revived the Royal Coronation for Miss Prairie View A M University in all its splendor. The year 1988 also marked the year that the acceptance and the publicity of the contest bloomed, and thus, not only was the location changed from the Memorial Student Center Ballroom to the Hobart Taylor Recital Hall, but is also became an official pageant. RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES The Johnson-Phillip All Faiths Chapel is the center of campus religious activities. Designed for both solitary meditation and interdenominational group workshops, the chapel serves the students through programming that addresses the major issues confronting die university community as well as the community at large. The United Ministries provide opportunities for students to maintain voluntary associations with religious groups representing their personal preferences. The ministries work with students through the chapel and through local community churches and sponsor the annual Ministers Conference. MUSIC AND DRAMA PROGRAMS The Department of Art, Music and Drama sponsors the Performing Artists Series, which presents famous artists in dance, music and theatrical performances during the academic year. The Charles Gilpin Players is an award-winning performing organization that provides a variety of exceptional productions. The University Marching Band, University Symphonic and Jazz Bands, and the Percussion and Brass Ensembles also perform on campus during the year. Each of these groups recruit members on a regular basis. INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS PVAMU has an outstanding men’s and women's track and fid 1 program. In 1990, the Women's Track Team won its ninth consecutive NAIA National Championship under the direction c: Barbara Jacket, who was selected to be the U.S. Women's Track Coach in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. Drama Gilpin Players Celebrate 60th With Fanfare PRAIRIE VIEW - The Charles Gilpin Players, the distin-guished theatre company at Prairie View A M University, will celebrate their 60th anniversary Saturday, April 22 from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. The much-honored Gilpin Players were founded in 1929 by Dr. Earl Sasser. The players were named for black actor Charles Gilpin, famous for his portrayals of Emperor Jones and Othello in the United States and Europe early in this century. “Performing consistently for 60 years, it is the oldest active black theatre company in the southwest,” an anniversary official said. Sasser, who left Prairie View in 1945 and now resides in Nashville, Tennessee, will be honored with other former directors of the Gilpin Players at the anniversary convocation. G i 1 p i n s Set State for First Spring Production. The Charles Gilpin Players and the Theatre Arts Program will present their first major production of the Spring 1989 season from April 18-21. The play, entitled The Heiress, was written by Ruth and Augustus Goetz, and will be directed by Dr. Ted Shine. The story takes place in New York City during the mid-1800's in a beautiful home in Washington Square. Catherine Sloper, the heiress, is deprived of love and happi- ness because of her lack of beauty and her reserved nature until she meets Morris Townsend, the charming, hospitable and poor chap who asks for her hand in marriage. Drama 47 From the non-Greek to Greek organizations, all make up the Power Play at Prairie View A M University. The Step Shows draw hundreds of students and visitors to the “baby dome” to watch the steppers stomp to the beat of the music and the “cane masters” twirl and twist the sticks of colors. The Honor Societies and Non-Greek organizations make up the Council of Student organization (CSO). The Greek organizations are governed by the Pan Hellenic Council, which are Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Beta Sigma, Zeta Phi Beta and Sigma Gamma Rho. There are over 150 student run organizations designed for promoting unity, socializing, honoring students, and promoting excellence. The Army and Navy Reserve Officers’ Training Corps is one such organization. They produce commissioned officers in armed services every year. They have commissioned over 2000 officers since 1956. The Athletics teams of the Panthers are the Football, Volleyball, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Baseball, Men’s and Women’s Track, Golf and Tennis. The University also sponsors intramural games of Basketball and Football. Some students like to engage in racquetball, pool, swimming, archery, soccer, card games, and chess. Prairie View is in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and is becoming more competitive each year. The big highlights of the Power Play in Sports are the Football Labor Day Classic Game, Gambling vs. Prairie View Football Game, played in the Cotton Bowl located in Dallas, Texas, Homecoming Football game, NAIA National Outdoor Track and Field Meet and the Prairie View Relays. Force ’88 Three Pointers!! Guards Lamar Holt and Ricky Dunlap sparked a 17-4 spurt at the end of the first half to propel PV past Mississippi Valley 82-73. Tied up at 34 with 3:42 remaining in the first half, the Panthers scored 10 points on two 3-pointer shots by Dunlap, two Lamar Holt free throws and a reverse layup by Michael Ervin. Senior center Roderick Coleman sank two baskets to bring Valley to within 44-38 at the 1:30 mark of the first half. However, the Panthers continued to put the offensive pressure on the Delta Devils. Michael Ervin got loose on a fast break that resulted in a jam and a short jumper to end the half. This spurt put the Panthers up 51-38. Ricky Dunlap had 12 of his 14 points from three point shots as 1 and Holt combined for 10 of the teams 11 three pointers. Pay-Off Time Freshman “Crabs”, “Silly” Sophomores, “Jovial” Juniors and “Sophisticated” Seniors make up the Prairie View A M University Class Section. When the “crabs” first show' up at Freshman Orientation they look like young school kids with brand new clothes and backpacks hanging from their small bodies. As they mature from the crabmania, they begin to attend different university functions and begin to act like “college kids”. By the time they become sophomores they begin to relax more and attend parties sponsored by the different fraternities and sororities. They chill out in front of Alumni Hall and try to get noticed by the upper-classed students. They gain an interest in joining a Greek or non-Greek organization. When they become Juniors they join all the organizations they can to make their resume look good. They are tired of going to classes after three o’clock and before nine o’clock. They are tired of looking at the same foreign professors; all they want to do is sleep, sleep, sleep ... They wake-up when they become Seniors, they are not worried about anybody’s business but their own. The foulee, the person whom the foul was committed against, is then entitled to a one-on-one confrontation with the goalee. The player's objective is to get the hockey puck in the net. Ironically, this is a perfect term that depicts the heritage of Prairie View A M University. In this case, however. Prairie View A M University (PVA MU) is competing in the arena against its opponent-NEGATIVE STEREOTYPISM. Prairie View 's heritage has been distorted by the assumption from outsiders, such as the media and other universities, that since the school is a historically black institution, it is incapable of providing a quality education for its students. PVA MU however, has the opportunity to become the tic tor in this one-on-one confrontation. Its strategy involves all of its great accomplishments, such as establishing the Hirst black honor's college, producing the highest number of minority engineers in Texas, establishing the first full-fledged, active Naval Resene Officers Training Corps Program at a Historically Black University and producing the highest number of black pre-med graduates and also the producer of the highest percentage rate in Texas of pre-med students accepted into medical school. When PVA MU's strategic plan is put into action it is sure to dominate the opponent. From the president of the university. Dr. Percy A. Pierre, to all the various department and colleges, Prairie View A M University prides itself on producing productive people. The university is composed of seven colleges: College of Applied Science and Engineering Technology, College of Arts and Sciences, Benjamin Banneker Honors College, College of Business, College of Education, College of Engineering and the College of Nursing, which is located in the heart of the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas. The faculty and staff secretaries greatly contribute to the making of the first class university that Prairie View is and will continue to be. Faculty 1890 COOPERATIVE EXTENSION PROGRAM In 1971, congress earmarked a portion of funds for extension work at 1890 land-grant institutions and Tuskegee Institute. After the passage of the Food and Agriculture Act of 1977. the 1890 Land-Grant Institutions and Tuskegee Institute received complete autonomy over extension programs. The act provided that not less than 4 percent of extension funds under the Smith-Lever Act of May 8. 1914. would be appropriated for extension work at 1890 land-grant institutions and Tuskegee Institute. Recognizing the significant contributions of 1890 colleges and universities, congress, in 1981, amended the act of 1977 to provide for not less than 6 percent of Smith-Lever funds for extension programming. The Cooperative Extension Programs at the 16 historically black land-grant institutions and Tuskegee Institute arc conducted in cooperation with respective 1862 counterparts to provide an effective network of educational programs to help people help themselves. The primary thrust of the 1890 programs is to improve the quality of life of individuals, families, and communities with limited resources and to help them resolve their socio-economic problems. The 1890 extension programs arc unique because few organizations work effectively with limited-income clientele groups in the four major program areas— agriculture and natural resources, home economics, community development, and 4-H and youth. He has participated in activities that range from Political Science Club Vice President, Blackstonc Pre-Law Society. Upsilon Tau Gamma, Sigma Rhomco, to Outstanding Cadet of Army ROTC. He received the Prairie View A M University Scholars Award. Lowell is a political science major who has participated in cross country events for the university track team. Althea Kay Mitchell-Washington is a native of Houston, Texas. She served as treasurer of International Womens Association Residence Hall Arbitration Chaplain, and was a member of Phi Beta Sigma. Althea holds a B.S. in Elementary Education and will receive her Master of Education degree this spring. Academics Prairie View War Hero Receives Bronze Star Bronze Star For Heroism Dr. Dennis Physics Department In the 42 years since he was recommended for the Bronze Star, the nation's fourth highest military decoration. Prairie View A M Professor George II. Stafford never knew w hy he didn’t recede the award. His daughter, son, and son-in-law, who saw fit to investigate, found that w ritten accounts of the battle Stafford participated in had been burned in a fire and had his medal restored in time to present it to him on Thanksgiving. Stafford was recommended for the Bronze Star for heroism after saving several of his fellow servicemen and assuming command after a foiled take-over attempt in an Italian town in the mountains Faculty near Milan in January 1945. A Journey Into A New Dimension Looking' at Mary Ann Palmer Mary Ann Palmer was crowned Miss Prairie View A M University 1989-90 on April 1, 1989. She is being hailed as one of the hottest rising artists. Although specializing in country and western music, an untapped genre for African-Americans, she began performing gospel songs in front of small audiences in local churches and various talent competitions at an early age. Miss Palmer recalls being inspired by the great works of famous country and western artists such as Charlie Pride, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, and Reba McEntire to name a few. The alluring songstress gives much credit for the progression of her career to opportunities which she embraced while attending the university. Miss Palmer was born in Hempstead, Texas on February 21, 1968 to Mr. and Mrs. Howard Palmer, Sr. She is a proud 1987 graduate of Bcllville High School, Bcllville, Texas, where she was the first African American to have a personal plaque placed in the trophy case, and is currently a Theater Arts major at Prairie View A M University, Prairie View, Texas. Her future ambitions are to become a grammy award-winning country vocalist and to become one of American's greatest actresses. Miss Palmer was the talent winner in the Miss Prairie View A M Pageant and represented the university in the 1989 Miss Texas Pageant. She has won several awards including 1987 and 1988 Best Female Vocalist, Prairie View A M University Showcase; and Austin County Fair Talent Contest Overall Winner. Her unique vocal stylings won her local acclaim for her impersonations of Dolly Parton, sponsored by Houston’s Majic 102 Radio Station. These arc merely a fraction of Miss Palmer’s many accomplishments. She has made various dramatic and musical performances, including a special performance on the Johnny High Country Music Review and participation in the productions of the Charles Gilpin Players and other performances around the state. With all her accomplishments, Mary Ann is destined for success in whatever she does, particularly the country music arena. It has been my pleasure to serve in this capacity because this experience has left me, not only with fond memories, but with a renewed and enhanced sense of pride and respect for this university and the scholars, teachers, students, administrators and faculty who have rebuilt Prairie View into an institution of higher learning of the first degree. Efforts were continually made by faculty and staff to promote my position in the Prairie View commun ity and for this I am eternally grateful. I have been included, as Mr. Prairie View, in decisive discussions and meetings to offer ideas and comments concerning programs that have been developed for the University and this is a practice that I hope will continue and be expected of Mr. Prairie View in the years to come. looking back on my term I have but one regret: I've had only one year to accomplish all that needed to be done. P.V. Students Always Studying Student Life Artwork Of The 80’s To The 90’s by Clarence Talley “Lef Your Light So Shine is an acrylic painting by Rev. Clarence Talley depicting the radiant and glowing character of the chapel supporters. The composition is pyramidically composed of a series of figures ascending to the apex of a brightly glowing candle. The group of figures represents the body of believers who have made this edifice a reality. They are woven together implying unity, strength and solidarity. The light emanating from the candle reaches out across the composition as a beacon. Centrally located arc two profiles joined together in a moment of quiet meditation. This work of art is dedicated to all persons who have allowed their lights to shine brightly by supporting this edifice physically, spiritually and financially. The Rev. Mr. Talley’s paintings have been exhibited nationally and internationally and he has received numerous commissions and awards for his works. At present, Rev. Talley is Assistant Professor of Art, Prairie View A M University and Assistant Minister at Mr. Corinth Baptist Church, Hempstead, Texas. Art From the non-Greek to Greek organizations, all make up the Power Play at Prairie View A M University. The step shows draw hundreds of students and visitors to the “Baby Dome to watch the steppers stomp to the beat of the music and the “cane masters twirl and twist the sticks of colors. The honor societies and non-Greek organizations make up the Council of Student Organizations (CSO). The Greek organizations are governed by the Pan Hellenic Council, which are Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Delta Sigma Theta, Phi Beta Sigma, Zeta Phi Beta and Sigma Gamma Rho. There are over 150 student run organizations designed for promoting unity, socializing, honoring students, and promoting excellence. The Army and Navy Reserve Officers’ Training Corps is one such organization. They produce commissioned officers in the armed service each year. Currently they have commissioned over 2000 officers since 1956. The Panther athletic teams consist of the men’s and women’s basketball, football, volleyball, men’s and women’s track, golf and tennis. The university also sponsors intramural games of basketball and football. Some students like to engage in racquetball, pool, swimming, archery, soccer, card games and chess. Prairie View is in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), and is becoming more competitive each year. The big highlights of the POWER PLAY in sports are the football Labor Day Classic game, Grambling vs Prairie View football game played in the Cotton Bowl located in Dallas, Texas, Homecoming football game, NAIA National Outdoor Track and Field Meet and the Prairie View relays. Sports PVU Runners Dominate Conference BARBARA JACKET Prairie View University head track and field coach, Barbara Jacket h been living in the fast lane for nearly 25 yrs setting records which few, if at women track coaches have broken. Tacked high on her wall is a banner that reads, “It's a sin to be ungra ful.” With a career that has eight consecutive National Association I Intercollegiate Athletes (NAIA) national outdoor track and field champic ships, athletes receiving US and international recognition, and a feat coaching honors that stretch from Texas to Russia, Jacket has nothing to ungrateful about. In fact, she describes her career, which had such hum! beginnings, more like Heaven - with very few moments that would warra repentance. Even from the youthful days at Lincoln High School in Port Arthi Texas, where from 1952 to 1954, she ranked among the top baseball throwc in the US, and at Tuskegec Institute where she participated in the 19: Olympic trials and received the most Outstanding female athlete award 1958, Jacket has always been a winner. “It’s my philosophy that winning is a tradition, but so is losing” Jack says. “In order to be a winner, you must want first yourself. This sumrr rizes her aggressive athletic demeanor that she tries to inculcate into Y athletes. She came to PVU in 1964 as a physical education and water safe instructor in swimming. Basketball pvu 80-NSU 66 The Lady Panthers used three consecutive three-point shots midway through the second half to defeat the Cardinals from Nicholls State University, 80-66. Prairie View got a game high 18 points from junior-center Cydncy Pcnnic and sophomore-forward Alice Ferrel. The Panthereltes also grabbed an incredible 69 rebounds and dished out 52 assists. Junior-guard Paulette Clay led the way with 12 pinpoint passes. Shonda Stanley led the Lady Cardinals with 23 points and 10 rebounds. After Prairie View jumped out to an easy 40-30 halftime lead, the Lady Cardinals went out on an 18-6 run to take a 48-46 lead with 13 minutes remaining. However, with the opponent down by two with ten minutes remaining, the Panthers scored on two consecutive three point baskets by sophomore-guard Marvalyn Snell. On the next possession, sophomore-forward Alice Ferrell followed with a three point shot of her own. And just like that, a span of two minutes, the panthcrcttcs increased a 2 point lead to an eleven point lead. These three-point rainbows helped Prairie View win their seventh game of the season. No matter what wc arc up against, wc arc always on top! Flexing 1989 After hard work and much sweat, the Prairie View Powerlifting team showed great stamina, strength and unity as they captured two second place trophies of the season. Competing at Edward Hudson Memorial meet in Houston, each lifter was fired-up and excitement was 3t its peak. There was much to be observed due to the number of competitions. each displaying total concentration and application of techniques. This was a masquerade of mastery in an art form. Prairie View's two outstanding lifters for this meet were Clinton Ward (148 lbs.) and Robert Gregiore (114 lbs.). The Panthers showed great confidence and strength in each event. This is modeled after their mentor, Dr. H. Fillyaw. whose philosophy transcends above discipline to achieve overall results of excellence — academically, physically and mentally. Bugle ’89 Freshman “Crabs,” “Silly” Sophomores, “Jovial” Juniors and “Sophisticated” Seniors make up the Prairie View A M University class section. When the “crabs” first show up at freshman orientation they look like young school kids with brand new clothes and backpacks hanging from their small bodies. As they mature from the crab-mania, they begin to attend various university functions and begin to act like “college kids.” By the time they become sophomores they begin to relax more and attend parties sponsored by the various fraternities and sororities. They chill out in front of Alumni Hall and try to get noticed by the upper classmen. They gain an interest in joining Greek or non-Greek organizations. When they become juniors they join all the organizations they can to make their resumes look good. 1'hey are tired of going to classes after three o’clock and before nine o’clock. They are tired of looking at the same foreign professors; all they want to do is sleep, sleep, sleep . . . They wake up when they become seniors. They are not worried about anybody’s business but their own. They dress up for job interviews every week, type research papers, term papers, thesis, and senior projects all year, not to mention the MCAT’s, LSAT’s and GRE’s tests ... just waiting for that supercalifragilisticexpealidocious day of graduation ...
