Professor of Mitory Science - Brief History - The feochlng of military roctlcs or Prolrie View was initiated under the Morrill Land Grant College Act of 1662 As the school expanded, so did the teoching of Militory Science. An ROTC unit was organized in December. 1916. Under this program oil qualified mole students who completed four years of militory training were eligible for commissions in the Reserve Officers Corps if they passed stringent oral ond written exominotions. Most oppliconrs were denied commissions. The majority of ROTC graduates served as Noncommissioned Officers in the Enlisted Reserves. In 1943. Prolrie View AGM College s ROTC unit was redesignated os o Senior Division Unit, Infantry Branch. Students who satisfied the requirements of on compus Militory Science Instruction, completed Summer Training Comp, ond qualified for o degree, were commissioned In the grade of Second Lieutenant. Infantry. U S. Army Reserve. Coders who hod distinguished themselves, both ocodemicolly ond in leadership positions received Regular Army Commissions. The first groduores of this new unit were commissioned In 1947. Seven years loter. this University converted to the General Militory Science Curriculum, thus ollowing students to quolify for commissions In ony of the Army's sixteen branches. A General Militory Science Curriculum hos been in effect since Februory. 1954. Adoption of the Modified General Militory Science Curriculum for Advanced Course students wos implemented beginning with the Foil Semester of School Year 1960-61. However, beginning with SY 1965-66 the Regular GMS Curriculum wos adopted for oil ROTC Instruction. Women students become eligible for participation In Army ROTC during SY 1975-76. The first women to be commissioned os U.S. Army Officers through the PVA ond MU ROTC program were commissioned during SY 1977-76.
