As tears streamed down her face, and as her parents watched from the audience, the new queen accepted the crown from last year's queen. Miss Alice Clemons. I am absolutely ecstatic. She said. And although I felt I had done my best, it is hard to believe that I won.” She was number two on the list of seven candidates viemg for the crown, and went through the three categories mandatory, talent competition, swim suit and then evening gown. She sang a sort of bluesy type song called Home' from The Wiz” and literally brought the house down. I felt comfortable singing.” she said. i 34 Gmateena Richardson, Miss Congeniality Carol Wayne. First runner-up Lisa Williams, Miss Praine View Tnsha Bursey, Second runner-up Verlena Mooney, Shirley Jefferson, Brenda Mitchell. 35 Pageant Continued The judges are by far the determining factor in the selection of Miss Prairie View Before, the potential queen competes in the evening gown, swim suit, and talent competition, they are interviewed first. Since, 1970, the Miss Prairie View A M University Scholarship Pageant in cooperation with the Miss Texas-Miss America Pageant has enabled the new queen to broadening her professional and cultural development. During, the pageant the audience was splendidly entertained by the Charles Gplm Players and Miss Texas Talented Teen, 1980-81, Stacey Michelle Jones. The Production In the beginning Success for the Stars was just an idea laying on the desk of Executive Producer Frederick Roberts. Like the saying patience is a virtue. Thus, the production came to life and by no means was it an ugly duckling. Instead it was perhaps the most well organized pageant ever presented to Prairie View. The production itself is a tedious task. Transforming the Baby Dome from an arena where the Panthers play basketball to where the next Miss Prairie View will be selected is a small miracle within itself. Not to mention the selection of the judges, acquiring talent for the production, contacting the media for coverage. But, in the end it's a lot of work. However, when the Mistress of Ceremonies announces the winner, it all seems that the work is worth it The Charles Ciplin Players 38 The Contestants Margaret Penn Sandra Baker Bemadine English Eunice Cartwright Mary Washington Althea Tate Shelly A. The Miss Prairie View A M University pageant is a scholarship pageant rather than a beauty pageant.” In keeping with the university philosophy of promoting SUCCESS and recognizing scholarship and academic achievement The following awards are provided by the university for those winning contestants. Miss Prairie View receives an official trophy, official crown, a bouquet of flowers, a scholarship award of $1,000, competition wardrobe for the Miss Texas Pageant valued at Si,200. The first and second runners-up receive a trophy, a bouquet of flowers, and a scholarship award of $500 The first runner-up is entitled to a trip to the Miss Texas Pegeant. Miss Congeniality is presented a trophy. Additional awards include plaques for the talent, swimsuit winners. And all contestants are presented plaques and special gifts. 41 CORONATION OF MISS PRAIRIE VIEW Like the little inquisitive girl in the fairy tale who followed the rabbit into the hole, in hopes of finding where he was going. Alice Christine Clemons stumbled ... but did not fall ... and found herself in the wid£, wonderful world of the Baby Dome The archbishop of Pantherland President Alvin I. Thomas made the fairy tale complete. crowning her Miss Prairie View at the Coronation Ball. Alice in Wonderland was the theme for this colorful event. Before a standing crowd of 5,000 the queen precariously walked to her throne, with each step she took, the royal princess and princes of nearly one hundred organizations curtsied as she passed. They also presented gifts. 46 Alice C. The committee has been captivated by the beauty of Houston, Texas for its photo settings. They've been to Bush Gardens, Astroworld, Albert Thomas Convention Center, Herman Park, the zoo. The Summit and even a setting in front of one of the city's freeway interchanges. Cooper, Frank Coleman, and Edgar A. l ove, and under the direction of an advisor, Ernest E. Just, a biology instructor. We, the members of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity believe that men of similar ideas of fellowship should bind themselves in order to form a more perfect union among college men to promote the principles of MANHOOD, SCHOLARSHIP, PERSEVERANCE, AND UPLIFT, (our four cardinal principles) to further brotherly love and fraternal spirit within the organization. The purpose of the fraternity is to stimulate the attainment of ideals and ambitions of its members, to disseminate and contact, to occupy a progressive, helpful and constructive place in the civic and political life of the community and of the nation. Also, to prepare its members for greater usefulness in the causes of humanity, freedom and dignity of the individual and to aid downtrodden humanity in its effort to achieve higher social, economic, and intellectual status. Rho Theta Chapter of the OMEGA PSI Fraternity was founded April 1970. The Rho Theta Chapter is one of the strongest chapters in the nation. The season ended as it began with yet another defeat. The Panthers continued their losing ways finishing last in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, compiling a 2-8 record and 1-5 in league action. Southwest Texas an eventual NCAA-II champion easily dispatched the Panthers winning handily 56-0 at home. SWAC champion Jackson State blanked the Panthers 29-0 in their first home outing. A crowd of 18,000 fans watched Southern shut the Panthers out 35-0 at Rice Stadium in Houston. Lynn Stice's 33 yard field goal gave the Panthers their first points of the season against Grambling. However, the Tigers had the upper hand with a 44-3 victory. In their annual battle with arch rival Bishop, the Tigers walked away with a 40-0 win capitalizing on many Panther turnovers. On a warm Saturday night in Seguin, Texas the Panthers displayed the type of football head Coach Cornelius Cooper had been trying to get his team to play all season. They employed big plays to snap a seven game losing streak by defeating Texas Lutheran 25-14. Quarterback Maurice Mitchell had his best game of the season 9 of 16 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns. He teamed up with tight-end Randall King for two scoring strikes of 1 and 37 yards. Running back Norman Briscoe enjoyed his finest game rushing for 102 yards on six carries. Reginald Stewart's three yard touchdown run plus a conversion pass helped push Prairie View to an 8-6 homecoming victory over Mississippi Valley on a rainy day in Houston. Willie Thomas' knockdown of a conversion pass helped preserve the win. Arkartsas-Pine Bluff snapped the Panthers two game winning streak edging them 20-16. League foe Alcorn defeated the Panthers 30-0. SWAC nemesis Texas Southern ended a long season for the Panthers with a 19-0 triumph in Houston. 161 P.V.
