The state pruchased the former Medical Building in Houston (top photo) and is being renovated for use by the College of Nursing Clinical Center. • Texas Governor Bill Clements. State Rep. Wilhelmina Delco and Texas A M System Board Members and officials visited the campus to examine and discuss immediate and future needs. • Black College Day in Texas attracted hundreds to the Capitol in Austin bringing signatures of support for all the state’s college with special appeal for Prairie View and TSU. • Graduates totalled over 1000 during the year as enrollment held steady and integration continued to move ahead. Civil Engineering Dept, has been selected as a member of the national standardizing committees by American Society for Testing and Materials. Mrs. Mamie J. McCloud. Dept, of Foreign Languages, served as sectional chairman of the South Central Modern Language Associate Meeting in Memphis, TN. Mrs. Ruby Bell, administrator, Division of Community Affairs and Dr. Marion Henry, Director of the Learning Resource Center, were both elected to the Waller Ind. School Dist. Board of Directors. Dr. George R. Woolfolk, Chairman. History Dept., has been named Vice Pres, of the Texas State History Department. Dr. Lucius R. Wyatt. Music Department, was appointed to serve as the Music Advisory Panel of the Texas Commission on the Arts. Dr. Jewellean Mangaroo, Dean. College of Nursing, was selected by the National League of Nursing to serve as Team Chairman for a site visit to the University of Central Florida in Orlando. Dr. Sarah Robinson Williams. Mrs. Douglas Woolfolk received the 1980 Human Relations Award from the Waller County Teachers Association. Lt. N. L. Allen. USN (’78) is now serving as Aircraft Commander of the Navy P-3 Orion which patrols the waters of Greenland. Iceland and the United Kingdom. Four PV grads represented their respective classes as Homecoming Queens. They were Artye M. Henry-Hockaby — 1930; Mrs. Jean Harris Brooks. 1945; Mrs. Bennie Jewell Douglas — 1955; and Ms. Mary Washington — 1975. State Rep. TX Baseball Team Has Good Year Grabbing top honors during the baseball season were Al Gomez. Charles Hudson. Thomas Battle and Adolph Crump. Gomez, a senior from Ha-c� enda Heights. Cal. led the team in hitting with a .375 average, in runs batted in with 40. set two school records in home run hitting with 10 in one season and 20 in a career, led the team with nine doubles and in runs scored with 34. He was named to the second team All Southwestern Athletic All Conference team and to the NAIA District 8 all star team. Hudson, a senior from Dallas, likewise was a second team all conference choice and first team all NAIA District 8 pick. He was the Panthers top pitcher the past two seasons. He appeared in 19 of the Panthers 43 games winning seven and losing four. In 80 and 1 3 innings he fanned 85 batters. Battle, a sophomore from Bay City. TX. was the No. 3 hitter on the team with a .359 average. Battle earned a spot on the All West Division Southwestern Athletic Conference team in the outfield and was also tabbed by the 22 scouts as All Tournament in the inaugural Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball. Crump, a senior from Los Angeles. Cal., also landed a spot on the All West Division of the Southwestern Athletic Conference all league team. Crump would up hitting .346 with seven doubles, three triples and four home runs and led the team in stolen bases with 18 steals in 20 attempts. Reynolds won out over other AL REYNOLDS outstanding athletes at Prairie View in a popular ballot contest conducted by the Panther. Reynolds was a starter on the Panther basketball team for two years and has been among the top scorers the past two years. ALL-SPORTS BANQUET All Sports Banquet Top Sports A wards Presented Two outstanding track performers from the 1979-80 season and an outstanding baseball player from this year grabbed top honors at the Prairie View All Sports Banquet recently. Honored as the most outstanding male athlete was AJ Gomez, a senior second baseman on the Panther baseball team, from Hacienda Heights. California. Honored as the most outstanding female athlete was Debra Melrose, who led coach Barbara Jacket's team to three indoor and outdoor conference championships and a TFA-USA national championship. SPORTS SCHOLAR Winning the President’s Academic Award was Karry Houston, from Dallas, who helped coach Hoover Wright to high finishes in the NAIA indoor and outdoor meets and the NCAA Division II meets. Gomez was named to the All Southwestern Athletic Conference team a year ago and has been the sparkplug ot this season which has the Panthers at 18-22 with two games left and a possible spot awaiting them in the NAIA District 8 playoffs. Gomez set two school records in hitting this past year socking a record 10 home runs in a single season and 20 home runs over his career. With games still to be playcef. Johnson with Award College of Nursing Candlelight Service Nursing Bldg, in Houston HERMTtmlf----------- MEDICAL CENTER PROFESSIONAL BUILDING LVN Program — Division of Community Affairs College of Nursing Nursing Officers (1979-80) Capping Ceremonies Nursing Club — New Horizons — 1980-81 243 AROTC at Prairie View The teaching of military tactics at Prairie View was initiated in 1878 under the Morrill Land Grant College Act of 1862. As the school expanded, so did the teaching of Military Science. An ROTC unit was organized in December. 1918. Under this program, all qualified male students who completed four years of commissions in the Reserve Officer's Corps if they passed stringent oral and written examinations. Most applicants were denied commissions. The majority of ROTC graduates served as Noncommissioned Officers in the Enlisted Reserves. In 1943. Prairie View A M College's ROTC Unit was redesignated a Senior Division Unit. Infantry Branch. Students who satisfied the requirements for on-campus Military Science instruction, completed Summer Training Camp, and qualified for a degree, were commissioned Second Lieutenants. Infantry. U.S. Army Reserve Cadets who had distinguished themselves academically and in leadership positions received Regular Army Commissions. The first graduates of this new unit were commissioned in 1947. Seven years later, this University converted to the General Military Science Curriculum, thus allowing students to qualify for commissions in any of the Army's fifteen branches. A General Military Science Curriculum has been in effect since February 1954. Adoption of the Modified General Military Science Curriculum for Advanced Course Students was implemented beginning with the Fall Semester of School Year 1960-61. However, beginning with SY 1965-66 the Regular GMS Curriculum was adopted for all ROTC instruction. Officer commissions were awarded at Fort Hood. Texas in 1947. To date. 1030 Officers have been commissioned in the U.S. Army through the ROTC program here, as of May 1980. These graduates were awarded commissions in the Combat army branches of the Armor.
