The 1978-79 Academic Year was especially significant because it embraced part of our 1978 Centennial Observance and marked the beginning of the 101st year and our move Into The Second Century.” Pantherland 79 provides an opportunity to look hark, once again, over our proud history and to record some of the activi-ties sponsored during The Centennial year observance. The Centennial Theme — 100 years of service to People also carried a declaration of our goal of continued progress and service into the university’s second century. Operation Success” — our major commitment to the combined academic and personal social success of our students ■— continued to be the university’s prime objective. Added in recent years and gaining impetus in 78-79 — was Operation First Class — our goal of simply building Prairie View into an institution — Second to none in every respect. Continuing improvement of physical facilities is serving as an important symbol of progress for the long range Centennial goal. The Pantherland staff has enjoyed recording the history making events of the year for you. Special Collections AROTC at Prairie View The teaching of military tactics at Prairie Vie was initialed in 1878 under the Morrill Land Grant Gdlcge Act of 1862. As the school expanded, so did the teaching of Mili-Uir Science. An ROTC unit was organized in Deceml er. 1918. Under this program, all qualified male students who completed four years of commissions in the Reserve Offi-cer’s Corps if they passed stringent oral and written examinations. Most applicants were denied commissions. The majority of ROTC graduate's served as Noncommissioned Officers in the Enlisted Reserves. In 1943. Prairie View A M College’s ROTC Unit was redesignated a Senior Division Unit. Infantry Branch. Students who satisfied the requirements of on-campus Military Science instruction, completed Summer Training Camp, and qualified for a degree, were commissioned Second Lieutenants. Infantry. U-S. Army Reserve. Cadets who had distinguished them-selves academically and in leadership | osilions received Regular Army Commissions. The first graduates of this new unit were commissioned in 1947. Seven years later, this University converted to the General Military Science Curriculum, thus allowing students to qualify for commissions in any of the Army’s fifteen branches. A General Military Science Curriculum has been in effect since February 1954. Adoption of the Modified General Military Science Curriculum for Advanced Course students was implemented beginning with the Kali Semester of School Year 1960-61. However, beginning with SY 1965-66 the Regular GMS Curriculum was adopted for all ROTC instruction. Officer commissions were awarded at Fort Hood, Texas in 1947. Io dale. 1020 Officers have been commissioned in the U.S. Army through the ROTC program here1, as of May 19(9. These graduates were award -d commissions in the Gunlut Army Branches of the Armor. They won the SOUTHWESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE Tourna-ment held the first week of May at the Memorial Park Country Club. After working so hard all semester and winning their other tournaments this was the big one they wanted to win. Prairie View literally ran away with the tournament. After second day play the scorecard had Prairie View with a 632 and TSIJ 23 shots behind followed by Mississippi Valley State. Jackson State and Southern University respectfully. From Massachusetts to Florida to Texas Groove PHI Groove has proven that it has found its niche in the university social organization realm.
