Inc., in the midwestern region came up with an idea of organizing a group of young women known as the Alpha Angel Society. This idea was made a reality and from 1970 to present there have been Alpha Angels on just about every college campus in the United States where there are Alpha Brothers. The Alpha Angels were founded on the principle of promoting finer womanhood, friendship, and love for all humanity. The objective of the society is to aid and assist the Brothers in their endeavor of rendering service to mankind. The Eta Gamma Chapter of the Alpha Angel Society was founded at Prairie View A M University spring of 1976. The chapter line consisted of 23 members and was named “Ebony Angels. Included among its affairs for the school year was the full participation in the Brother's Founders' Day Program, joint fund raising activities, attendance at Texas State Convention of Alpha Chapters and celebration of the 1st Anniversary. In addition, the sisters cosponsored a Carol Retreat with the Brothers for the residents of the Hempstead Nursing Home and a Halloween Party for the children in the Prairie View Community. 226 Margaret Cooper Erma Simon v ■ Sharon Hayes Carolyn Robinson Angel of the Year Award” “Ebony Angels” Eta Gamma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. The Fraternity still remains the largest predominately Negro college fraternity and also was the first to become interracial. The Fraternity’s motto still inspires the members of the ETA GAMMA CHAPTER, which was founded as an extension of the Epsilon Iota Chapter at the University of Texas at Austin in 1963. to convert this principle into a description by promoting manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all mankind. The activities and accomplishments for 1976-77, which is now a part of the chapter’s illustrious history, include the Annual Founders’ Day Observance, an event co-sponsored with Epsilon Tau lambda (Graduate) Chapter, which featured Brother Otis King. City Attorney of Houston; the President's Greek Scholarship Trophy and Greek Service Award for 1976 and 1977 respectively; The Outstanding Alpha Chapter Award for Collegiate Chapters in the Southwestern Region of the Fraternity. The Pan Hellenic Council is the coordinating and governing body of Prairie View's Greek Community. The Council's main efforts are directed toward promoting successful rushes and pledge periods, community service projects, leadership workshops, and scholarships for fraternity and sorority members. In other words, the council is a vital element in allowing the wheels of the Creek Community to remain in motion. Greeks, vital and varied, contribute greatly to campus activities. The highlight of Prairie View’s Fall Semester is homecoming and Greeks, perhaps more than any other, arc able to consider that weekend as a true coming home. Sisters and brothers, separated by graduation, arc reunited in traditional activities. The events from the Coronation, the Pig Skin Review to the game itself, give a strong boost to fraternal pride — an important factor in any greck’s life. Activities around the campus help to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood felt in any fraternity. But never let it be said that individuals become lost in the fervor of fraternity unity. Greeks arc campus leaders, serious studiers. serious partiers. but above all. greeks are individuals. They are not to be classed because they chose the greek life. They are to be considered separately, as unique members of the Prairie View Community. After all. fraternities and sororities are only people with a common bond: BROTHERHOOD. HELLENIC During the year, the council conducted two successful rushes and supervised two successful pledge programs which ultimately led to an increase in the Greek Community of some 75 members sponsored a Public Symposium as a part of the Homecoming week of activities: conducted a fund drive for the San Jacinto Girl's Scout, and participated in various other activities. In addition, the highlight of the year was the Council's receipt of a Charter from the National Pan Hellenic Council on April 3.1977 at a special presentation program which featured Mr. Gary Ling. 2nd Vice President of the National Council. To close out the school year, an all Greek party was held at the Newman Center. In all. the Council had a successful and rewarding year and look forward to another challenging and meaningful year. Kincade Jr. Industrial Education Major Waco, Texas EDITOR’S MESSAGE: Togetherness, the entire Staff of 1977-PANTHERLAND and myself put together another Yearbook. One in our usual custom, that is reflective of the high standards for which this University stands. As we started the Publication of this Book, we all strived to make decisions both as a group and individually. We decided what idea to create, how to create them and in what place it would be most effective. We put our minds together, exchanged views and finally reached a conclusion. Being of one body, we realized we cannot do anything alone. But it takes individuals of various interests to create a work that would have been otherwise impossible. At this junction.
