Jr. U.S. Bicentennial 100th Anniversary of the Founding of PV ami the Texas A M System operation pVTnn,y SUCCESS PV’s Spirit of ’76 1976 is a very special year in Panther-Land. We have two Anniversaries to celebrate. Prairie View had its beginning in 1876 which was also the first year of the Texas constitution, of the common free school system and at the dawn of public higher education in Texas. The 15th legislature in establishing Texas A M also authorized Prairie View A M to operate under the management of the A M Board. The Texas A M system is 100 years old. It was not until 1878 however that the college actually got underway, thus PVA M will officially observe its centennial in 1978. This year we are proud to recognize the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the university. We arc also celebrating the nation’s Bicentennial, which gives us two birthdays and a lot of which to be thankful. Like the spirit of 1776, Pantherland in '76 has caught a special spirit which has been labeled “Operation Success. In a nutshell it means that we are all working together here to guarantee the success of all who call PV their home. It's something like it was in '76 . . . when Americans joined hands in establishing a new nation ... to guarantee for all — among other things, the Right to Life. The goals and major objectives of the School of Engineering are: Engineering GOALS AND OBJECTIVES The School of Engineering is a community of students, faculty, and administrators dedicated to the advancement and communication of knowledge in the field of engineering. The central activity of the School of Engineering is learning. This is compatible with the official concept and practice of the University. It offers undergraduate programs which are structured for discovery, interpretation and communication of knowledge which arc-focused upon the development of the potential capabilities and insights in the individual via a mutually shared activity between students and faculty. The basic philosophy of the School of Engineering is embodied in the commitment of the University to an educational policy in which the complete development of the student as a person is regarded as paramount. What the student knows and what he is and he can do by virtue of his capabilities. both tangible and intangible, are regarded as the controlling viewpoints in the educational process. 1. To provide an engineering education of excellence, for the individual student, by considering his needs and interests as well as societal needs. 2. To undergird engineering education with a strong foundation in the liberal arts; so that the education of the students will prepare him to become a responsible member and leader of society and cause him to achieve a progressive maturity, intellectual, emotional, professional, and social. 3. To search for students and to serve students who have a desire for knowledge and show promise in being innovative as well as being creative and who have the potential for intellectual leadership. 4. To prepare the student for leadership in the practice of his profession by extending his engineering competence into areas of current and societal importance, particularly in those areas for which methodologies and techniques arc not yet developed. 5. To attract to an already competent faculty, men and women, who by their distinguished and professional accomplishments, will bnng new life and vigor to the process of engineering education and through their research, add to the rapidly growing structure of knowledge. 6. To explore and develop the opportunity for meaningful educational relations for interdepartmental collaboration and interdisciplinary programs throughout the University. 7. Io provide programs in education and opportunities which will serve the University community by generating a better understanding of the impact of technology upon society and its future, and to equip young men and women to cope with it. 8 I o serve the state and national welfare by raising the general level of engineering competence and achievement, through instruction, research, design, and development. I he School of Engineering offers four degree granting programs. They are as follows: 1. I he Bachelor of Architecture is provided for the student who completes the curriculum in Architecture. The curriculum is developed along the philosophical premise that the architect will function as a generalist in that process of shaping the physical environment. The primary objective is to develop creative and professionally knowledgeable practitioners and to provide a foundation for continuing professional development. 2. The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering is provided for the student who completes the curriculum in Civil Engineering. The Civil Engineering curriculum is organized to provide the student with a thorough foundation in the underlying principles of the basic sciences and the engineering sciences. The curriculum is planned to provide students for design, constuction. management and administration of complex engineering systems. 3. I he Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering is provided for the student who has an interest in understanding and applying electrical, electronic and electro-magnetic phenomena, in the processing of energy to do man's work, in the processing of information to convey man's thoughts and the combination of these processes to increase his effectiveness in the use of available resources. The study of Electrical Engineering is designed, to provide a background of basic sciences, engineering sciences, and the analysis and design of representative systems essential to the development of engineering competence. 4 Ihc Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering is provided for the student who is concerned with the management, design, development and manufacture of equipment for energy conversion and for manufacture products, tools, vehicles, space systems and a variety of complex mechanisms and sy stems which affect given tasks. The curriculum includes a strong foundation in the fundamental sciences of chemistry, mathematics and physics, as well as a strong foundation in the engineering sciences. The Engineering The engineering educational process is developmental with explorative experiences which focus on the preparation of the engineering student for professional practice as a professional engineer. The process is designed to help students establish a firm foundation in the physical sciences, mathematics and the engineering sciences. Emphasis is placed on the social sciences and the 1 Educational Process humanistic sciences so that students can develop breath of scope and perspective. The engineering educational process is geared to helping students establish their identity and achieve their full potential via engineering programs which are broad and conceptual rather than rigid and inflexible. Inc., in the Midwestern Region came up with amde. of organizing a group of young women known as the Alpha Angel Society. This idea was made a reality and from 1970 to present there have been Alpha Angels on just every college campus in the U.S.A. where there are Alpha brothers. The Alpha Angels were founded on the principle of promoting finer womanhood, friendship and love for all humanity. The objective of the society is to aid and assist the brothers in their endeavor of rendering service to mankind. Shirley Williams splashed to victory in the 400-metcr run and anchored the winning 400-yard mile relay teams to spark Prairie View to the team title in the Association for Intercollegiate Athletic for Women track meet in Manhattan. Kansas Saturday. The eight member Prairie View team finished high in just about all the events it entered during the rainy two-day meet, racking up 60 points. Seattle Pacific trailed in second with 51. squeaking by third-place Iowa State with 50. Coach Barbara Jacket lost the services of one of her standout performers. Andrea Bruce of Jamaica, who was felled by a groin pull. The Pantherettes however managed two meet records the first day of qualifying. The Prairie View team consisted of Debra Sapenter Bennelt. the American 550-dash recorder holder: 400-metcr hurdles Mary Ayers: sprinters Carol Cummings: quartermiler Shirley Williams and other sprint medley and mile relay team members Beverly Day. and Arthurine Gainer. The Pantherettes have participated in several meets this season and continue to win in all of them. They have won 158 straight regular season meets and four national titles in the past six years. Women’s Track Team ) ) FIVE PV PAN THERETTES IN OLYMPIC TRIAL Among the Olympic hopefuls were seven Prairie View Panther-cttes (two representing their native Jamaica), which is more participant form any other one school. Mary Ayers. Shirley Williams. Debea Sapenter. Arthurine Gainer. Beverly Day. Carol Cummings and Andrea Bruce, are Prairie View Pantherettes qualifying for the trials. Bruce and Cummings will represent Jamaica. Shirley Williams, a Houstonian. Day. Gainer and Sapenter. qualified in the 100 meter hurdles. Bruce is one of the world’s best 100 meter hurdles. Ayers specializes in the 400-meter hurdles, hut it’s not an Olympic event. Cummings will run on the mile relay team and compete in the 200-mctcr. The Pantherettes who won the AI AW and USTFF Nationals. SWAC Indoor and were runner-up at the AAU in Los Angeles, boost world class participants. Williams 52.1. which she ran at the USTFF is the second fastest clocking in the 400-meters in the world this year. Debra Sapenter is the world record holder in the 400-meters. Arthurine Gainer, a Freshman from Temple. TX set the National AAU record in the 400- meter run. Beverly Day. a sophomore from Dallas, has qualified in the 400-meter. Beverly Day. has run on the Pantherettes record breaking relay teams. As a team the Pantherettes proved they were the nations best when they won the Athletic Intercollegiate Association for Women (Al AW) National title defeating such powers as UCLA. Iowa State. Kansas St., etc. At the recent AAU Nationals the foursome set a new AAU National record running a 333.85. Prior to then the same foursome set a new USTFf United States Track and Field Federation record with a 336.7 and a 339.6 National AIAW record al Manhattan. Kansas. At the USTFF Williams. Ayers. Day. and Sapenter. set a National record in the 440 relay with a 44.9. which is the fastest to be clocked in the world this year. In the past five years the Pantherettes have won more relay’s meets and set more records than any woman team in the nation. The Olympic Committee might do better if it qualified the entire Pantherettc team — well, it almost did.
