A team working together: An individual working alone: An outcome. A goal. Another practice, another challenge The fun ethics part of the world. A true part of Prairie View ........ SPORTS I). Bohannon Star Fullback S. Williams Star Quarter-MHer AU-S. W. A C. Growing in popularity is the slogan Prairie View Produces Productive People. It has probably caught on because obviously it is a fact, and also because it provides a rallying point for a special type of educational institution. Like other traditional black colleges. Prairie View A M must constantly define its special mission and. in a sense, prove its worth. There is little doubt that P.V. has produced outstanding citizens in the past. The sampling of P.V.-ites who made news in 1974-75 is presented here as examples. A broader list could contain thousands of ex-students serving throughout the nation and the world in virtually every field of endeavor. Hie 1975 PANTIIURLAND staff decided to highlight the slogan and extend it to include the university's present activities and programs. I hese pages will show how Prairie View Produces Productive People. It is our hope that this record of leadership will stand, and as we move ahead year by year these young prinlucts will evolve as actual, full-fledged producers of all that is good for mankind cvcrvwhere. Members of the Junior Fellow Association serve as a ready resource for discussion of any matter of interest or concern to the student. Students entering Prairie View will find that one of the first persons they .eet upon arrival on campus will be their Junior Fellow, who will assist «hem � ith their social, recreational, and academic developmental problems. The Junior Fellows Association sponsors many cultural recreational and v ial activities in the residence hall for the enjoyment and development of the residents. The 74 season was not a good one for the Panther football squad. The 1974 Panther team did not experience the thrill of victory but clearly understood the agony of defeat. The team is a young one. Elwood Plummer, was in his second season and there was but one senior on the team. As a whole, the team was inexperienced but as the season progressed it was evident that the expectations given the team were incorrect. The star players on the team were the Tamplin twins (who are both seniors) and Wanda Smith (junior). The twins Ceola and Creola were also the leading scorers. Crcola averaged 20 points a game while sister Ceola averaged 14 points an outing. Wanda Smith also had a season scoring average in the double figures. Vickey Cole. Marsia Gipson. Carolyn Turner and Billyc Douglas were also key players. The team was coached by Coach Jesse Hurst. Womens — Basketball • 73 Track 74-75 The Panther Track Teams have enjoyed many successful seasons over the past years. Coach Hoover Wright has produced many talented tracksters. Such outstanding track stars as Felix Johnson. James Bagby. Jesse Ball and Frederick Newhouse have burned the cinder for the Purple and Gold of Prairie View. The 1975 season was also full of star cindermen. Led by senior Cornell Evans. Derek Hanks. Cyrano Revada. John Derek. Milton Mitchell. Johathan Beal. In fact Prairie View's Panthcrcltc Track Team is one of the most Productive Female track teams in the nation. Led by World Class. All-American. All-S.W.A.C. Quartermiler Debra Sapenter, Prairie View's Women’s Track Team has won 38 out of 40 meets. The 1974-75 team was full of stars. Quartermilcrs Shirley Williams, Charlene Branch. Mary Wallace teamed with Sapenter created a sprint medley and mile relay team that was scarcely (if at all) defeated. Other strength came from world class sprinter Carol Cummings. The team finished third in the conference and was led by All-S.W.A.C. Jesse Allen (average per game 75.4) and AII-S.W.A.C. Robert Vaughn. Additional strength came from senior two time AII-S.W.A.C. Albert Cunningham. These three players provided the nucleus for P.V.’s young and budding golf team. The P.V. team were the victors in the Prairie View Relays Golf tournament. Charles Melton, the Panthers' All SWAC tennis star, received the President's Award for the athlete with the highest academic average for four years. I%8 was the first unit established in 22 years. It was also the first of the six ROTC Units established in predominately black colleges and Universities. ROTC Units established in predominately black colleges and universities arc an integral part of the Navy's efforts to motivate ’ eligible minority students for careers in the Naval Service. Since, its organization, the Prairie View NROTC Unit has become a significant source of black officers in the Navy and Marine Corps, w ith its graduates pursuing many of the careers available in the Navy and the Marine Corps. The Mission of the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps is to provide qualified officers for the Navy and Marine Corps. This, is accomplished at N RO I ( colleges through instruction and training in required naval subjects. The Navy and Marine Corps offer many fields to commissioned graduates of NROTC Units. These career fields are open to those who meet the requirements and show interest in these fields. Some of the possible career fields are: 1. Surface Warfare 2. Naval Aviation a. Naval pilot b.
