Wood PRAIRIE VIEW A M COLLEGE OF TEXAS 96th Year Prairie View, Texas 77445 BLACK LIBERATION THROUGH EDUCATION Pantherland 1973 is dedicated to the idea that the full liberation of Black people must come through Education The very existence of Prairie View A M, both in the past and even now. is predicated on the principle of providing (specially suited) education for a large number of youth from black communities over the state and the nation. So a major objective of the College is to provide opportunities for those in Texas and elsewhere who are culturally, socially, and economically disadvantaged, as well as providing programs attractive to all youth Unfortunately, too large a number of blacks are still on the outside wanting in There are many ways being proposed for getting into the mam stream and it is possible that many varieties of ways will work All will agree, however. that education is an essentia1 factor in moving ahead, and at PVA M. we take this opportunity to point up the fact that Education Is The Way While Pantherland 73's theme aims at Black Liberation. To this end he assumes the responsibility of directing the educational efforts in the School of Agriculture toward sensitizing and equipping its students to recognize and to aid in (1) the elimination of rural poverty, (2) the conservation and development of natural resources. (3) the improvement of rural health and welfare, and (4) taking full advantage of the existing and increasing opportunities for employment in the broad area of agriculture. Additionally, he must assume the responsibility of creating a climate for and an opportunity to do research in the several areas that affect rural people, their environment and the life-style of rural people as well as create and maintain an educational arm of the college so that current information, through extension education, is made available so that segment of the population who desires to can benefit from the several agricultural functions of the School of Agriculture. Boctons Visit Miss AROTC Crowned at AROTC Ball High School Field Day and When Department of Naval Science Commander Reeves R. Taylor, U.S. Navy, is the Commanding Officer of the NROTC Unit and Head of the Department of Naval Sciences. As the official representative of the Navy on the campus, he is responsible for the administration of NROTC scholarships, and the conduct of courses of instruction in naval and marine subjects for both regular NROTC scholarship students, and students of naval science. The Commander also directs training activities of the NROTC students and assists and advises in other College and campus activities. Highlights —1972-73 The Navy takes care of its own,” is more than just a saying; to Navy personnel, it’s a way of life, that is indicative of the loyalty and professional commitment that is characteristic of the Navy and its personnel. Here at Prairie View, we attempt to instill this spirit in our Midshipmen along with the technical skills required for them to become the best Naval and Marine Corps Officers possible. The second semester began with unit strength at 88 midshipmen. Of this number, 28% had fall semester grades that qualified them for the college honor roll. Two of our midshipmen, Kennard R. Luckey and James A. Davis, both sophomores, achieved a 4.0 grade point average (straight A’s). Secretary 107 PHILOSOPHY OF MEMORIAL STUDENT UNION The word Union is herein defined as the community center of the College, for all the members of the Prairie View College family. students, faculty, administration, alumni and guests. It is not just a building, it is also an organization and a program. Together they represent a well-considered plan for the community life of the college. As the living room” or the hearthstone” of the college, the Union provides for the services, conveniences, and amenities the members of the college family need in their daily life of the college. The Union is part of the educational program of the college. As the center of college community life, it serves as a laboratory of the citizenship in our democracy. Through its various boards, committees, and staff, it provides a cultural, social, and recreational program, aiming to make free time activity a cooperative factor with study in education. In all its processes, it encourages self-directed activity, giving maximum opportunity for self-realization and for growth in individual social competency and group effectiveness. Its goal is the development for persons as well as intellects. The union serves as a unifying force in the life of the college, cultivation enduring regard for and loyalty to the college. The value of Memorial Center and its programs are measured by the level of the intellectual, cultural, spiritual, social and recreational experiences we share. It is a laboratory for the education and development of the whole person, in mind, fn personality, in leadership, in citizenship and services, in happy association with others, and in many joyous pursuits that make human hearts light and gay. Clark opened the scoring with an 18 yd. kick, then put one across from 19 yds. in the second period and another from 26 yards in the final quarter. John Moore scored the visitor's touchdown on a 44 yard pass from quarterback Hardy Malvo. Grambling Drops PV 36• 0 in Washington, D. C. Washington. D. C. — Quarterback Matthew Reed passed for four touchdowns and 275 yds. on Sept. 30. as Grambling thundered by Prairie View A M 36-0, in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game. While Reed was leading an offensive machine that jolted Prairie View for 465 total yds., the Grambling defense was throwing a blanket on the Panther's ground game PV ended with minus 106 ground yds. and gained only 23 passing. The Panthers made three first downs, two by penalties. and crossed the 50 once. Panther Quarterbacks. Richard Lewis and Hardy Malvo were sacked five times for 110 yds. in losses. Alcorn Braves Win 9-6 Over Panthers at Home The Alcorn Braves, behind the running of Clifton Davis, rammed across two fourth-quarter scores to hand the PV Panthers their first home loss in four seasons, 13-0, in a Southwestern Athletic Conference clash. Davis wrecked PV’s homecoming hopes by rushing for 123 yds. and scoring Alcorn's first touchdown on a one-yard plunge early in the final period. Charles Davis notched Alcorn's final tally less than 3 minutes after Davis's score. TWSU Wins 13-0 in Annual Thanksgiving Day Classic A 98-yard pass interception by Tiger Davis Thomas and a 66-yard scoring pass from quarterback Ronald Merthie to wingback Melvin Baker were the two plays that separated Texas Southern and PV from a deserved scoreless tie. Ernest Pugh came off the bench to lead Texas Southern in rushing with 64 yards on eight carries. Merchant was tops for PV with 41 yds. on 16 carries. California. The popular magazine ranked number one in the world in the spirit medley (1:40.6) and mile relay (3:46.8). Their 1:40.6 sprint medl-e an American record, which was set at the Texas Relays. The Pantherettes are number two in the nation in the 440-relay (45.6). Debra Sapenter. the Pantherettes all American quartermiler has run the second best time in the nation with a 54.6. Carol Cumming’s. 10.7 in the 100-yard dash, is fourth best in the nation and Shirley Williams’ 10.6 is the third best. The Pantherettes have competed in 27 meets this season. COLLEGE CLUB COLORS MAROON AND GRAY Purposes of Club Crescendo are to maintain a high plane of social club life and interclub relations within the college, to cooperate with the administration in the maintenance of high social standards and to further intellectual accomplishment and sound scholarship. Club Crescendo, the oldest social club for men at Prairie View A. M. College was declared on October 24, 1949 and has continued to function for the betterment of Prairie View down through the years. Club Crescendo activities include presenting a float at the annual homecoming parade, presenting a vesper program, presenting the annual Talent Showcase for the purpose of highlighting the various talents in the Club, and participating in all worth while campus activities.
