PV 14 The Prairie View Panthers opened their 1971 season under new coach Jim Hillyer, at San Angelo, against the Angelo State Rams. PV struck first blood when cornerback Lester Morgan intercepted a pass and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown. In the second quarter Angelo tied the score on a 15 yard run and a halftime 7-7 score. PV went ahead in the third quarter on a 39 yard pass play from Hardy Malvo to John Moore. Later in the third quarter PV fumbled a punt and lost it on its 10. Angelo later scored to tie it 14-14. In the fourth quarter. Prairie View fumbled on a poor pass from center at the 16. where Angelo covered the fumble and later scored for the winning points. PV 13. JACKSON STATE 12 In a battle of new coaches. PV's Jim Hillyer beat Jack-son State's Robert Hill, 13-12. Jackson drew first blood when Ed Payton ran 3 yards for a score. The opportunity :ame on a poor pass from center which Jackson covered n five. The Pat was wide. PV came back late in the first quarter when quarterback Hardy Malvo passed 10 yards to uliback Ronnie Brooks. Randolph McGraw kicked the Pat. In the fourth quarter, Jackson scored as they moved 43 ards with Palmer Lee scoring from the one. The Pat was mssing. PV came back again as Malvo threw 3rd and 38, 0 a leaping John Moore at the one. Malvo later scored on 1 sneak to end the game. PV DUMPS SOUTHERN. 21-3 The Panthers mixed a patent passing attack with a fine ground to defeat the Southern Jaguars in the Dome. 21-3. Southern received the kickoff, moving the ball from its 19 to PV's 29. where quarterback Lawrence Haynes was thrown for a loss and fumbled the ball. Jessie Wolf covered the fumble for PV. Later. Malvo hit John Moore for a 24-yard touchdown for McGraw's Pat gave PV a 7-0 lead. Southern cut the lead to four points when freshman quarterback Woody Watson booted a 25-yard field goal. PV later scored on a 43-yard Malvo to John Lewis pass play. McGraw converted and PV led 14-3. PV s last score came in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard run by Jerry Jefferson MARINES NIP PV 18—17 The Ouantico Marines came from behind to beat Prairie View 18-17 in the Astrodome. PV scored first when Lester Morgan ran 59 yards with an intercepted pass. On a bad pass from center. George Borner, who had planned to punt ran 54 yards and it was 14-7 at halftime as Randolph McGraw had kicked both Prairie View points. McGraw booted a field goal to make it 17-7 in the fourth quarter. The Marines scored again on a pass, made the 2 point conversion and then kicked a 27 yard field goal with 1:58 left to win 18-17. GRAMBLING STOPS PANTHERS ( r a tu ta tf The Prairie View Panthers lost their Conference gr last Saturday, a 30-7 defeat at the hands of Grambi-ng Grambling jumped off a 17-0 first quarter lead on a yard Calvin Lewis field goal and a touchdown nr d I yards by Lee Fobbs. While shutting out Granting n n second period. Prairie View scored its long touchdCNr cr a seven-yard pass from Hardy Malvo to John Mxr Grambling added another touchdown in the third jta'-when Fobbs scored on a 73-yard run. and the Tigers capped their scoring in the final period on a Roger BoDon r-terception covering 59 yards. TENNESSEE STOPS PV Tennessee State got the early scores and defeated Pra rie 42-20. Joe Gilliam scored from three out and thr • Ollie Smith with a 25 yarder. Ennis Jackson then we yards with an intercepted pass. PV was on the boards as James Harris plunges for i 2 passes to Louis Neal and John Moore set it up. HrM Malvo scored from the five after two passes to Moore ered most of the yardage. Fred Lane scored later passe.-to John Moore for 9 yards and a score. Tennessee two second half scores from Gilliam to Charles Wade J 77 and 39 yards. PV LOSES TO MVC Prairie View's Panthers committed suicide at Itta Bena. against e MVC Delta Devils. PV made 5 crucial mistakes that directly led Mississippi Valley's touchdowns. MVC led 23-0 at halftime, and PV's first score came in the third jarter. MVC scored on a 30-yard interception for its first touchdown. VC scored later on a one-yard run after PV fumbled there. PV's Randolph McGraw booted a 43 ird field goal in the first quarter and then kicked two more in the tcond quarter — the first for 36 yards and the second for 25. In the third quarter scored on a 5 yard pass play, but Lutheran mbied in the end zone in the last quarter and Henry Tennessee II on the loose for a PV score. McGraw added his 10th point of eday. Time out on the t ekJ. BRAVES DEFEAT PV The Alcorn Braves beat Prairie View 33 to 13 in Vicksburg, to go into a deadlock with Grambling in Conference standings. The Braves led 7-0 at the quarter. 13-7 at halftime, and 19-13 after three periods before breaking it open in the final stanza. Bobby Huell scored in the first period on a 1 yard plunge with Oscar McA-dory adding the point. Prairie View tied the score on a 1 yard run by John Lewis and a Randolph McGraw conversion. William Wooley and Bob Cade hooked up on a 9 yard pass for the second Alcorn score. The third period scores were by Clifton Davis of Alcorn and Hardy Malvo of Prairie View on a 4 yard keeper. PV s 6-9 Jr. Forward-Center and Junior Guard Don Dyer were the big guns in the Panther 67-63 upset win over nationally ranked Sam Houston State. Reynolds poured in 20 points and pulled down 25 rebounds, while Dyer hit four straight 20 footers to keep the Panthers in the lead and on to a win. Lawrence Johnson, the Panthers’ 6-10 sophomore center had a good night also. Johnson pulled down 13 rebounds before fouling out with little over five minutes left to play. 93 PV WINS CHICAGO TOURNAMENT Bill Cofield’s hot shooting troops walked away with the r second utive Chicago Invitational title. The Panthers met Virginia Union in contest. Paced by Walter McCowan's 27 points and Lawrence 23 rebounds the Panthers dumped the Virginians 94-70. Le a tough club out of Memphis. This idea, namely Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Incorporated, rapidly grew and became a reality. The ideals, standards, and principles of the sorority were so great that graduate chapters and undergraduate chapters on various campuses were organized. Liberia, and West Africa. The Sorority was founded by a group of twenty-two Howard University undergraduates on January 13. 1913. In the year of her founding. Delta listed as her particular purpose and object: to establish and maintain a high standard of morality and scholarship among women. Brown, another student, was invited to aid in the movement, fintfy after much deliberation, the permanent organization of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was formed on January 9.1914 The original three founders. Taylor. Morse and Brown, chose nine of their college classmates at Howard University as charter members of the fraternity. Since that time the ideals of Brotherhood. Scholarship, and Service have spread with PHI BETA SIGMA FRATERNITY until now there are more than four hundred chapters in the United States and t foreign lands.
