PV Prog rei in the It is doubtful that anyone could have guessed Iwck in September 1970 when tin school year liegan that it would turn out to lie one of the most difficult and challenging in the college's long history. The future looked bright back those long months ago. Const met ion had liegun at long last on major improvements costing more than $12 million and there was talk of more (much more) to come. Many were saying that PV is finally ready to move, and the Yearlnjok staff agreed that PANTHKRLAND 1971 should be a look ahead-—toward PV Progress in the 7()'s. The Centennial Council Study had set the stage and PANTHERLA] D-1971-PANTHERLAND-197t undersoil booker—brown—edwards—god win—goodtnan—Johnson—joties—locke- he Centennial Year celebration planned for 1978 profiled a natural goal. Discontent among students came to a head in Febru-iry—ending with various expressions of anger, fear and iolence. At the year’s end there was an investigation to e reported by the Texas Senate and various other chal-enges extending from students, faculty and the alumni. Pantherland has been visibly shaken in 1971. Despite he obvious concern for the institution’s future, we feel hat the college can gain strength from its present difficulties and the look ahead is still one of progress in the 'event ies. 3A NTHERLA ND- simmons—traylor—white—woodard— -PANTHER rice—wood 3 I ssejBoAd physical facilities Construction contracts totaling S13.7 million were awarded at the beginning of the school year by the Texas A M University System Board of Directors. Revenue bonds valued at $11.5 million were sold to finance the projects. Two new residence halls, a din- ing hall and kitchen, utilities expansion and air conditioning for the Administration and Education buildings were included in the construction projects approved. Contracts were let and work proceeded throughout the school year. It has been reported that this major construction will be completed by Sep- 5 tember 1972. student activities As in all years, student activities started off with high spirits. New for the year were several fraternities and sororities, and the older cluhs stayed right in the middle of the action. Also very noticeable on the instructional side were increased activities of departmental organizations and various honor groups. What promised to lie a real banner year in regular student activities ended in a massive protest movement. Progress in many areas was seriously damaged by the course of events which marked the final months of the year. 7 Viola Jacquo—Miss PV Attend. They are pictured at the Houston Post’s new, attractive building on the Southwest Freeway in Houston. The Post’s Fashion editor wrote them up the following week. students Selected by the yearbook staff to represent the progressive student body are the groups pictured. The Most Fashionable and Most Beautiful are regular features of the staff. Miss Prairie View and her attendants and the other beauties selected for this feature represent well the Prairie View student. The academic achievers, the sports stars and others will l� e well represented throughout the pages of this hook. Miss PV and Other Beauties — Miss Margaret Penn—Miss Prairie View 1970-71, is surrounded by a selection of attractive co-eds including (1 to r) Mavis Hardeman, Sandra Nicholson, Adrian Cooper, Miss Penn, Ada Simon, Chyrel Parker, Katherine Leggette, and Tomniye Mathews. Most Beautiful — Nominated by students, the 1970-71 Most Beautiful included (1 to r) Shirley Pratt, Wilma Burrcn, Tonya Hendricks, Roberta Brown, Pamela Barnes, Rosalyn Simpson, Beatrice Houston, Janice Payton, Joyce Locke, Janetha Woods, Cynthia Stewart, Betty Hall, Floretta Thomas, and Barbara Bateman. The group is pictured at one of the major freeway interchanges in the growing city of Houston. OT PV 8 Lee Gets All Star Berth Where the action is . • • Prairie View A M College’s two-time All-American Bivian Lee was selected to play in the December 25 North-South football game in Florida. Lee, who is Prairie View’s first two-time All-American since Otis Taylor, was also selected as an alternate to play in the Senior Bowl. He is considered the top athlete in Prairie View’s history, being selected All-SWAC three years, All-American two years and team captain two years. The 6-3, 205 pound defensive hack was selected as one of the outstanding college athletes in America last year and as Prairie View’s Outstanding Defensive Player this year. McMURRA Y RII S PV McMurry expanded to a narrow 9-7 lead with three fourth quarter touchdowns to down Prairie View. 30-13, Saturday in their first meeting ever. Prairie View scored on Gentry Powell's one yard plunge in the second quarter ami a nine yard pavs from quarterback Luther Hudson to split end Louis Neal in the fourth quarter. Prairie View experimented with four quarterbacks. Archie Smith rushed for 155 yards in 23 carries, including touchdown runs of 61 and 1. and quarterback Bogcr Martin completed 19 of 33 passes for 271 yards for McMurry. GRAM RUNG TOPS PV 57-6 Before 23,000 fans in Chicago’s White Sox Stadium, the Prairie View Panthers made several mistakes as the Gramhling Tigers rolled up a 57-6 win. The Panthers came back in the 4th quarter and held the Tigers to only 8 points. Luther Hudson scored for PV. Linebacker Ted Mercer off to the races. PV STOPS JACKSON The Prairie View Panther defensive team displayed good defense by holding the tough Jack-son Slate Tigers to only 7 points, while the offensive team rolled up 14 points. Freddie Bennett G0) kickoff Thomas McCall, leads charge pflAIRIE VIEW Edward Fisher OFFENSIVE TACKLE BISHOP WHIPPED 29-26 Raymond Burgess’s HO yd. kickoff return and Daniel Simmon’s Interception, was enough for the Prairie View Panthers to defeat the Bishop Tigers in the Colton Bowl, ending a three year win streak for the Tigers. PV fullback Knoch Morgan scored two touchdowns. Hoc Austin Dll 6-5 200 Sophomore from Houston PANTHERS HAIL CAESAR 38-17 AT HOMECOMING Prairie View’s quarterback. Curtis Caesar, showed Homecoming fans why he his known as the pride of Beaumont in high school as he completed 16 of 17 passes for 148 yards and three Tl)’s while directing the Panthers to a 38-17 win orer Mississippi Valley before 12,000 homecoming celebrants. It was PV’s third straight win and their record is 4-2-1 and in conference play 2-1-1 while the Delta Devils dropped their fourth straight and have a 1-5 season mark, and 0-3 in conference play. PVs Maurice McGowan tossed a 16 yard pass to Summy I.ee for a TI) early in the second quarter. The PAT failed. The Della Devils had faked a punt and turned it into a 50 yard gallop by Robert Thomas in the first quarter to give the Devils a quick TD and Charles Hill kicked the PAT. Doerfler tallied from a yard out 1 :’20 before halftime after Ron Pro had drilled a 36 yard field goal earlier in the period for the bulldogs. The Prairie View offense never led, hut the Panther defense turned in a strong performance, sparked by Talmadgc Sharpe, former Houston Furr athlete who notched 24 tackles. Defensive end Dewey Rogers added 13 tackles. Bivian I-ce was another Panther who excelled on defense, holding Texas Lutheran’s leading receiver, Ricky Smith, to two catches. The Alcorn Braves sewed up the Southwestern Athletic Conference football championship here Saturday afternoon by defeating the Prairie View Panthers, 27-3. It was the Panthers’ first loss at home in two years, the last previous defeat inflicted by Alcorn in 1968. About 1,200 fans, one of the smallest crowds of the season, saw the visiting Braves cash in a fumble and three pass interceptions for their four touchdowns after the Panthers had taken a 3-0 first quarter lead on Freddie Bennett’s 30-yard field goal. Alcorn went ahead with 4:15 to play in the second period | when linebacker William Tate covered a PV fumble on the Panthers’ 8 yard line.
