Yearl ook Advisor PRAIRIE VIEW A M COLLEGE OF TEXAS Sixties Today A College Yearbook must l e current in its message to its present students—yet in a sense the book becomes history the moment it is published and released. Panthcrland 1970, is just this sort of dual purpose piece. While there is a definite tendency to reach into the challenging years ahead in the Seventies, our real concern for the past dictates that we pay tribute to the decade just passed—the roaring, soaring, exploring, awakening, sexiest and most provocative years of the Sixties. The Sixties were the years of campus revolt, of black awareness and the reach for the moon. It was also the years of national crisis and of fallen leaders who left great legacies to guide a wounded and divided nation in countless years ahead. On the hill, we experienced our share of student unrest. The college became integrated about mid-way the decade. There was a change in administration, and most recently a citizens’ study group has recommended developments for 1970-80, which would compliment the fondest dreams of the most devoted PV-ites. Prairie View scored on a 72-yard bomb from quarterback Maurice McGowan to tight end Sammy l c. The PAT by Lee, was no good. Southern scored on a 3-yard pass from Howard Hall to 65-yard T.D. pass from Hall to Louis Porter. PV Bows to TSU 10-0 Playing before its third 20,000 or better crowd, the Panthers almost pulled out a victory over the TSU Tigers in the Dome Thanksgiving night. Quarterback Luther Hudson was injured and the Panthers weren’t able to get an offense going. Prairie View ended the season with a 3-4 SWAC mark and a 4-5 season record. A brief history of its origin is quoted from Dr. Arctas W. Nolan, who was, at the time of its origin, professor and head of Agricultural Education, University of Illinois: “It was at the end of a busy day one winter evening in 1921, just as I was about to close my office, when three young men from one of my classes in agricultural education diffidently stepped in, and asked if they might explain a proposition that was upon their minds. We sat down together, and after an hour or more of earnest conversation and dreaming, a new fraternity for prospective teachers of vocational agriculture was launched. We decided that a group of men, unified by such a high purpose as to become good teachers of agriculture, and to serve a nationwide cause so honorable, had good reasons for a formal organization. Last year’s freshman and junior classes moved up to become the spohomorc and senior classes, respectively. The second Prairie View Naval Science Institute (NSI), held last summer at Corpus Christi, produced a new junior class of 14. After a very busy Orientation week of testing and interviewing, a new freshman class of 32 was selected from an initial 100 applicants. There were also a number of important changes and additions to the staff. On 14 July 1969, CDR G. E. THOMAS— who had been serving as acting Commanding Officer since 2 April 1969, was appointed Commanding Officer of the unit. Then on 23 July 1969, LCDR R. A. FREDERICK was appointed Executive Officer. Fall semester saw the arrival of two new officers, LTJG J. P. OZAWA and LTJG R. S. DRAKE, and the retirement of the Unit’s storekeeper chief, SKC 0. D. DOUGLAS. 1969-70 was the first year of the Navy’s Flight Indoctrination Program at Prairie View. On 11 October 1969, five midshipmen attended their first ground school class under LTC T. J. HATHAWAY, and later flew their first flight from Hooks Memorial Airport at Tomball. Within weeks, all of the men had flown solo. The program, under the direction of LCDR FREDERICK, leads to a private pilot’s license, and the chance to become a Navy Aviator. The beginning of the new decade also brought a new look to the third floor of Spence Hall. This was the Navy’s first year in its “new” spaces, after their renovation last summer. Prairie View’s football squad played their first games in Houston’s famous Astrodome this year. The NROIC marching unit and color guard gave full support on both occasions. Last, but certainly not least, was the all-important first commissioning. After two-and-a-half years of study and drill, including a rigorous first summer at Naval Air Station Pensacola and aboard the carrier LEXINGTON, and a six-week summer cruise (or bulldog training at Quantico for the Marine options), 13 seniors received their well earned commissions as Ensigns in the U. S. Naval Reserve or as Second Lieutenants in U. S. Marine Corps Reserve. These new officers have chosen a wide variety of areas in which to specialize. Two have selected flight; two, supply; one, nuclear power; two, Civil Engineering Corps; three, the Marine Corps; and four, unrestricted surface line. Every pedant, every damagogue, every cynic, every hypocrite, every troublemaker, and some others of an entirely different character will try to downgrade them even to the extent of mockery and ridicule. But here are some of the things they do. They build your basic character, they mold you for your future roles as the custodians of the nation's defense, they make you strong enough to know when you are weak, and brave enough to fate yourself when you are afraid.
