The Army ROTC, under the command of Lt. Col. Lloyd J. Stark, develops officers with ample quantity to provide a corps of well-rounded leaders. The cadet G rps provides training in basic leadership, honesty, intelligence, and common sense. The advance ROTC Corps is composed of Juniors and Seniors who have successfully completed the two required courses in ROTC and desire to pursue further the training necessary to qualify as officers in the United States Army. 173 SCABBARD AND BLADE Scabbard and Blade is the National Military Honor Society. Its purpose is to unite in close relationship the Military departments in American Colleges and Universities. Scabbard and Blade aims to foster the essential qualities of good and out standing fellowship among cadet officers. Cadet Capt. Alford Williams is the commanding officer. VETERANS HAMILTON-FEARING COUNTERGUERRILLA In view of the present world situation and the turmoil we find in Vietnam, guerilla and jungle warfare have become the important modes of fighting. In order to counteract these insurgent forces, special forces arc being trained. These forces arc known as countcrguerrilla forces. Around the country, ROTC units have been organizing such counterinsurgent forces. The Hamilton-Fearing Countcrguerrilla Company was thus organized. The unit gets its name from Col. Baird and Pear Admiral H. H. Anderson traveled from Washington to establish the new unit. Thus begun, the unit headed into its summer program at full speed. Next, a trip to NASA and a visit with Astronauts Shepard and Lovell, followed by a two-week cruise aboard the aircraft carrier USS Lexington. Finally, it was September and the beginning of a new school year which was to be highlighted by the crowning of the NROTC Queen and a visit by Admirals S. H. Kinney and H. H. With 3:41 remaining in the first quarter, Richard Johnson kicked a 26 yard field goal to put the Panthers ahead 3-0, which stood at halftime. When freshmen Maurice McGowan and Huz ell Allen, directing the offense and Glen Woods, Lee von Spencer, James Bagby heading the defense, the Panthers went on to win 10-8. MAURICE McGOWAN Quarterback SOUTHERN JAGUARS DEFEAT PANTHERS 20-0 The Prairie View Panthers, fresh from a victory over a stubborn Jack-son team, found the Louisiana crew of Coach Bob Smith a little hard to deal with. The Panthers led by Clarence Williams, Lee Spencer, James Bagby, Uriel Johnson and a host of others, played a better game than the scores indicated. RICHARD JOHNSON Defensive Back 200 Allen Merchant on roll out against Grambling. GRAMBLING SHOCKS PV 22-14 Freshman quarterback Allen Merchant moved and passed the ball against vicious Grambling defense to keep the Panthers within striking range. When it looked like Grambling had put the game on paper, a determined and strong defense led by James Lucas, Bivian Lee, Lee Von Spencer, and Uriel Johnson’s 75 yard punt return put momentum in the Panther squad. A controversial interference call knocked the Panther out of submission. BISHOP UPSETS PANTHERS 20-13 The Prairie View Panthers got their surprise of the year when they met the then undefeated Bishop Tigers at Cobb Stadium in Dallas. Despite a 10 0 lead, that was highlighted by Uriel Johnson's 85 yard touchdown pass from Robert Hamilton, the Tigers came back to score 20 points to defeat the Panthers for the first time in over 20 years. PI HEATS MVC 19-7 The Prairie View Panthers continued their Homecoming tradition of winning by downing MVC 19-7. Jerry 'The Jet' Jefferson led the Panthers offense with 119 yards in 14 carries. Freshman quarterback Luther Hudson hit James Mitchell and Charles Williams in clutch situations to control the game over the Delta Devils. PV TRACK TEAM 1968 N.A.I.A. CHAMPIONS The 1969 Prairie View track team is rated along with the Nation's best. The 1968 mile relay team was ranked number three among the Nation s colleges and the Sprint Medley Relay Team ranked number nine. The track also won the 1968 N.A.I.A. indoor meet at Kansas City. The Panthers lost the 1968 Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship by one point to Southern University. Coach Hoover Wright returns his same group from last year and some promising sophomores Besides winning the 1968 N.A.I.A. indoor meet, one of the Panthers' biggest wins came when they defeated the University of Texas in the mile relay in the California Relays. Several members of the 1968 team were ranked in the US. Top Twenty track performers. Felix Johnson was ranked number three in the 880 run behind Wade Bell of Oregon and Rco Kutschinski of Michigan. Jessie Ball was ranked eleventh in the intermediate hurdles. Thurman Boggess was ranked number eleven in the 440. Felix Johnson, the Panther captain broke the 1968 Sugar Bowl record with a 1:50.8 in the 880. Felix's best time in the 880 was a 1:45.5 in the Olympic Trials. The Sunday School meets each Sunday morning at 9:15 in the Student Union. It is a student organization with faculty participation and supervision. The objectives of the Sunday School are: To give the students a philosophy to live by, based upon the principles of Christianity and democracy as exemplified in the life of Christ and other religious leaders; and to give the students an opportunity to develop their talents by participating in organizing and conducting different types of duties and programs. The conference was focused on four areas: Leisure Time in the Community; Making Use of Economic Resources; Rebuilding Community Pride;” and Political Education. RELIGIOUS ORGANIZA TIONS YOUNG WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION The YWCA was established several years ago at Prairie View College. As the largest religious organization, it is an intercollegiate, national and international movement. The YWCA is a Christian movement within the fellowship of the church but independent of its control. The purpose of the YWCA is to unite in the desire to realize full and creative life through a growing knowledge of God. Mrs. A. I. Thomas was guest speaker at the Y” candlelight ceremony this year. The purpose of fee Newman Association is to deepen the spiritual and enrich the temporal lives of its members through a balanced program of religion intellectual and social activities. The Association’s projects for the year include; a series of 25 movies on religious, social, culrur-and historical topics, which are open to the entire student body. COGIC The Church of God In Christ began in the year 1906, when a great religious revival under the auspices of Elder W. J. Seymour of Los Angeles, California, swept over the western portion of the United States. Hundreds of people attended this revival and were baptized with the Holy Ghost of fire. Two attending the revival were Elders G. A. Mason and D. J. Young who called a meeting in 1907 of ministers that believed of the Holy Ghost doctrine. Under the leadership of Bishop C. H. At present the organization is comprised of Prairie View students of all classifications.-The purpose of this organization is to establish and maintain high moral character, academic excellence, superior standards of drill proficiency, and the advancement of cultural and social standards indicative of an American leader. The Pershing Riflettcs are established as a unit under the concept of a service organization, devoted toward extending good will to all people and to assist the ROTC.
