Wood WORLDS OF ACTION-PACKED ADVENTURES IN PANTHERLAND The World of Pantherland is an action-packed, appealing World of people who are going places and doing important and exciting things. In 1967-68. The Prairie View World was particularly in a whirl. Moving toward the development of a residential college philosophy, students and stall alike became more involved in the processes of change at the college. Leadership conferences. workshops and other involvement activities dotted the year’s schedule, and new terms like junior fellows” became commonplace in the language of the hill.” On the World of Pantherland were nearly 4000 students and 500 start' members, many of whom made outstanding contributions to their own development and to the progress of the college. All are pictured in the pages of this book, and many of those who achieved arc recorded herein. The Stall' of the PANTHERLAND takes pride in presenting this pictorial history of Prairie View A M College for the academic year 1967-68. Dallas CO-CAPTAINS — James Williams and Alonzo Wallace PANTHERS UPSET HIGH RANKED SOUTHERN JAGUARS 20-3 Following a 3-3 halftime deadlock, the Prairie View A M Panthers broke loose in the second half to whip the Southern University Jaguars 20-3 here. The strong Southwestern Conference rivals exchanged field goals in a first half high-lighted by defensive play. James Williams kicked 23 yards for Prairie View’s first score, and Mark Samples booted nine yards for the Louisiana Team’s lone tally. Williams kicked a second field goal for 16 yards early in the third period. Mid-way the period Panther halfback Willie Dearion broke through the middle for a 23 yard touchdown run. Williams converted. Panther quarterback Robert Hamilton ran through the middle for 15 yards and paydirt in the fourth quarter to extend PV scoring. JACKSON TIGERS TAKE OPENER DROPPING PV 19-6 Jackson College’s Tigers defeated the Prairie View PV LOSES 13-10 HEART BREAKER TO POWERFUL GRAMBLING ELEVEN A M Panthers 19-6 in a Southwestern Conference opening battle at Blackshear Field. Following a scoreless first period, the Mississippi-ans broke the deadlock as quarterback James Hart-field converted. The Tigers scored again in the third . period with Richard Lampkin passing 14 yards to Eugene Wren. The conversion attempt failed. The Panthers struck back early in the fourth quarter with Robert Hamilton connecting with Richard Lewis !for a 48-yard pass to Jackson’s one yard line. Halfback Frank Perry plunged for the lone Panther tally. In the final minutes. Tiger Johnnie Gray intercepted a Panther pass and ran 30 yards to paydirt. Nearly 5000 spectators at Grambling College watched a neck-and-tuck battle between the Panthers of Prairie View and the Tigers of Grambling, with the Tigers coming out ahead 13-10. Panther quarterback Robert Hamilton passed to Uriel Johnson for the sole PV touchdown and James Williams added a field goal and extra point to complete the scoring. Other offense leaders for the Panthers included Willie Dearion. Frank Perry and James Mitchell. The loss was the second for the Panthers with one victory to their credit. PV RIPS BISHOP 31-12 IN 43rd ANNUAL COTTON BOWL CLASSIC Halfback Wille Dcarion. a 9.4 sprinter, used his speed to lead the Panthers to a decisive 31-12 victory over Bishop College in the Cotton Bowl. The Prairie View speed merchant broke over left guard early in the game and ran 63 yards for a touchdown. He also plunged for 4 yards for a second score. It was the 43rd playing of the annual State Fair Classic. A crowd of approximately 8,500 watched the Panthers host the Dallas based Bishop Tigers in their first appearance in the annual game. The Panthers never trailed in the game, but Bishop was actually never out of contention until PV’s Robert Shaw raced a punt back 62 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Prairie View threatened to turn things into a rout in the first half, taking a quick 16-0 lead. Following Dearion’s touchdown dash, quarterback Robert Hamilton passed to James Mitchell for a second score. Early in the second period, tackle Oliver Spencer trapped Isaac Thomas in the end zone for a safety. ARK. LIONS MAKE UP FOR LOST TIME IN SOUND 65-7 PV DEFEAT The Prairie View A M Panthers were completely rolled over 65-7 as the Lions of Arkansas AM N made up for many previous lashings, beating the Panthers for only the second time in a long history of competition. The Lions rolled up 525 yards total offense during the contest, getting 353 of them on the ground. Prairie View’s lone tally came in the fourth period. Following a 70 yard drive, quarterback Robert Hamilton connected with end Leon White for the final 15 yards. James Williams booted the extra point. Arkansas scored early on a pass from Joseph Johnson to Edward Cross. Williams scored two touchdowns and the Lions added a safety to lead at halftime 23-0. AM N added three more touchdowns in the third period and three in the final quarter to complete the massacre. PRAIRIE VIEW EASES BY MISSISSIPPI VALLEY 19-13 The Prairie View Panthers combined both running and passing to overcome The Mississippi Valley Delta Devils 19-13 in a very close contest in Itta Bena, Mississippi. FIELD GOAL IS DIFFERENCE IN PV’S 25-22 HOMECOMING WIN OVER ALLEN Co-Captain James Williams booted a 30-yard field goal in the final seconds to give the Panthers a 25-22 homecoming victory over the Allen University Yellow Jackets of Columbia, South Carolina. The sec-saw game upped the Panthers’ record to 4-3 and gave the Yellow Jackets their fifth loss against two wins. Allen opened the scoring in the first quarter when halfback William Chapman scored from one yard out. George Kelly ran the two point conversion to give Allen a 8-0 first quarter lead. The first Panther score came on a Robert Hamilton to Uriel Johnson pass and the two also teamed for a two-point conversion knotting the score at 8-8. Allen scored again to lead at halftime 15-8. The Yellow Jackets moved ahead in the third period on a 75 yard punt return by James Wiggins. Panthers Otis Pointer and Frank Perry scored for PV with Williams converting to knot the score at 22-22. Williams’ field goal came at the end of the game. ALCORN TROUNCES PV PANTHERS MAKE GOOD SHOWING IN 46-21 IN MISSISSIPPI NARROW 13-6 LOSS TO TEXAS SOUTHERN The Alcorn A M Braves handed the Panthers their fourth conference setback, winning 46-21 in a game at Lorman, Mississippi. Quarterback Robert Hamilton threw three touchdown passes, and James Williams took the Panther individual scoring lead for the season with a total of 27 points. James Mitchell ran across two TD’s for the Panthers; Robert Hamilton added another and Williams converted on three extra-point tries. Alcorn’s Oscar Martin, Walter Coburn and Marvin Arrington ran over two scores a piece for the Braves. The Prairie View A M College Panthers fought a tough battle with arch-rivals Texas Southern in Houston losing only by a narrow 13-6 margin. Tiger David Hays kicked two field goals for Texas Southern, but TSU added another Touchdown and an extra point to defeat the Panthers. Neither team was able to move their offense very well in a battle which developed to be much of a defensive game. PV CLOSES FAIR SEASON WITH 16-13 VICTORY OVER WILEY COLLEGE Quarterback Robert Hamilton fired a pair of scoring strikes in the first half to lead Prairie View A M to a 16-13 football victory over Wiley College. Hamilton hit Charles Williams with a 26-yard touchdown pass in the opening period and Nolan Bailey with a 17-yard strike in the second quarter. FRESHMEN CRIDDERS BASKETBALL The PV Panther Cagers were impressive in 1967-68 as they ended the season playing about 500 ball. Lacking height against the major conference opponents, the team was most impressive with the fast break and in outside shots. It is affiliated with the national organization, the National Society. ASCE The club was inaugurated as an immediate first step towards the realization of a full fledged ASCE student chapter, soon joining the ranks of other student chapters presently established in other schools of engineering, across the country. The club has as its purpose the promotion of professional interest in Home Economics and developing young ladies who are Home Economics majors in becoming efficient leaders in home and community life. The vast number of successful graduates in this field who have been motivated by its founders and sponsors give evidence that it is a strong force when molding those who have been influenced by its high standards. LIBRARY SCIENCE CLUB The objectives of the Library Science Club are (1) teach good citizenship with books, (2) to create effective reading habits. The Gilpin Players, under the direction of Mr. Shine, presented “Harvey’ during their fall production. YWCA The objective of the YWCA is to express both in deeds and words their conviction of the importance of the Christian way of life, both to the individual and the society. The YWCA tries to attain these ideals through discussions, films and recreational activities. Each year a picnic and the annual “Y” ball are given. 131 MUSIC EDUCATORS NATIONAL CONFERENCE The Music Educators National Conference was founded on PV campus in I960. The purpose of the club is to develop social and cultural aspects of the individual. The motto is: “To strive for better musicianship.” “I must prepare myself and some day my chance will come” is the club slogan. PVSIEA Prairie View Student Industrial Education Association purpose is to provide an opportunity for all students in the School of Industrial Education and Technology to participate in educational experiences with his fellowman through the media of informational, inspirational and business experiences. 132 BLACKSTONE PRE-LAW SOCIETY The Blackstone Pre-Law Society organized on October 18, 1968 was named in honor of Sir William Blackstone an English Journalist. Careathers is their advisor. 133 FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA Prairie View Collegiate Chapter of Future Farmers of America is an organization of Agriculture Education students. The organization and operation of the collegiate chapter are in harmony with the purposes and ideals of the state and national organizations of Future Farmers of America, under whose authority it is chartered. Each year the chapter sponsors leadership contests, educational tours, and social activities. THE RODEO CLUB The rodeo club is newly organized on Prairie View’s campus and is composed basically of students in the animal sciences. Wendell Baker is president. 134 RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATIONS PRAYER MEETING CHOIR - BAPTIST STUDENT MOVEMENT The purpose of these combined organizations is to serve as a link between the college and the Church; to establish in the minds of the students the concept of religion. The objectives of the organizations are (I) to promote love and respect for fellow students; (2) to help students understand themselves (3) to continue their growth in Christianity and (4) to increase world-wide vision of Christianity and human relations. CHURCH OF CHRIST The Church of Christ is a student organization to keep the students spiritually minded while away from home. This organization takes the place of regular worship and helps the student to continue to grow stronger in his religious beliefs. 135 RELIGIOUS THE SUNDAY SCHOOL The College Sunday School, one of the largest organizations where students function, is non-denominational and non-compulsory. The Sunday School meets each Sunday morning at 9:15 in the Student Union. It is a student organization with faculty participation and supervision. The objectives of the Sunday School are: To give the students a philosophy to live by, based upon the principles of Christianity and democracy as exemplified in the life of Christ and other religious leaders; and to give the students an opportunity to develop their talents by participating in organizing and conducting different types of duties and programs. The present membership represents almost two decades of service to the nation from World War 11 up to the present crisis in Viet Nam. This organization was formed on campus with the same ideals in mind that made these men among the best fighting men in the world. At Prairie View, the P R unit promotes military and social activities for the college Army ROIC. Major Z. White serves as the advisor and P R Captain. Nobleton Jones, is the company commander. The P R drill unit has been outstanding and very successful in fulfilling the goals and obligations of the society. THE COUNTERGUERILLAS The Counter-guerrilla Detachment of the ROTC Brigade has become one of the most distinctive units in the cadet corps. This year the detachment has grown considerably compared to previous years and promises to become one of the basic corps most popular voluntary units. Under the dynamic leadership of Major McDaniel, the detachment is sporting a new look that is the talk of the campus and brigade. 275 Colonel L. J.
