Wood VOLUME 9 - PRAIRIE VIEW, TEXAS 77445 On the hill There are very few hills in the prairie lands nearing the Gulf coast of Texas. Prairie View A M is situated on the “one in Waller County and because of its uniqueness PV-ites everywhere refer to the campus as “on the hill.” While the elevation is small compared to Texas hill country, the happenings on the hill are mighty big — particularly in 1967. the year we proudly present to you on the pages of this college yearbook. On the hill in '67 were many Top-flight student leaders. outstanding faculty and staff, challenging academic programs, excellent athletic teams, loads of beautiful girls and many (a total of 3632), fine conscientious students. The Year 1966-67 marks the beginning of a new college administration and a new direction toward increased emphasis in the technical fields. “Partners in Progress was the symbol given to signify the increased involvement of the Board of Directors. System officials, alumni, faculty and students in the effort to move the college forward. Many interesting events occurred during the year as the pages of this book will indicate. The staff of the PANTHER LAN I) is proud to record these happenings for you. ALVIN I. THOMAS Dr. Thomas, former Dean of The School of Industrial Education and Technology, was named President of the College by The Texas A M System Board of Directors in November, 1966. He replaced Dr. E. B. Evans. Acting President, who had come out of retirement to assist during the illness of Dr. J. M. Drew, who later resigned due to ill health. The new president began his administration with a pledge for a new day at Prairie View. He called for cooperation from the Board. Faculty members. Alumni. Students and citizens to work as “Partners in Progress” in a program to move the institution forward. It is fitting that the staff of the l%7 PANTHER-LAND extends its congratulations and best wishes to Dr. Alvin I. Thomas. The Prairie View Committee ol the Bo.ird of Directors (Mr. Thompson. Dean of Instruction and Dean of the School of Engineering, carries a triple role in college administration, lie also serves as Director of several auxiliary enterprises, chairman of student Employment and Athletics. HORACE D. MURDOCK. Business Manager, is the chief financial officer of the college. He is responsible for coordinating the fiscal and business operations of the college. THOMAS R. SOLOMON. Dean of Students, is responsible for the coordination and development of programs in the area of student services. He also serves as professor of Political Science. ADMINISTRATION HARRY E. FULLER. Dean of Men. is responsible for the housing of all male students. He directs all activities associated with living conditions of men and for their general welfare. REDA L. BLAND-EVANS. Dean of Women, is responsible for the housing of all female students and the coordination of programs designed for the safety, general welfare and comfort of college women. LEROY MARION, Assistant Dean of Men. is directly responsible, through the Dean, for the provision and maintenance of housing facilities for all male students. 22 CURTIS A. WOOD. Director of Information Services. is responsible for the College news sere-ice. official and student publications, photography. and coordinates the public relations program of the college. GEORGE R. RAGLAND. Registrar and Chairman of the Department of Sociology, maintains official academic records of students and coordinates the registration programs. JONKL L BROWN. Director of Extramural Services and Mead of the Department of Economics, coordinates various conferences, workshops and meetings and works with off-campus programs, including extension courses. C. I). YANCY. Director of the College Placement Services, assists graduating students and alumni in making contacts for job placement. He also directs the Prairie View Interscholastic League Pro gram. EMORY R. OWENS. Director of College Health Service, directs the services which are maintained to safeguard the health of students and to provide medical care as needed. JAMES E. MOSBY. JR.. Special assistant to the President, represents the president on special assignments and conducts studies designed to improve goodwill and public relations for the college. 23 GEORGE STAFFORD. Director of the Counseling Center, is in charge of the Counseling services and is the college official in charge of major testing programs. DONALD W. SOWELL. Director of The Memorial Center, coordinates the programs and services of the Student Center and is manager of the College Exchange W. VAN JOHNSON. Director of Student Activities. is responsible for coordinating the activities of students, including the Student Government Association and campus clubs. LEE C. PHILLIP, college chaplain, is responsible for weekly chapel services, counseling and coordinates the'program of religious life at the institution. ' JACOB L. BOYER. Food Service Director, is responsible for planning and coordinating services needed to provide adequate food for students and faculty mcmbcrsofthecollege. D. N. HERNDON. Laundry Superintendent, is responsible for the operation of the College Laundry, a service extending to all students, faculty members and several departments. 24 GRIM- W. KENDRICKS. Accountant, is responsible for the audit of all college vouchers and for payrolls. ULYSSES R. BELL, accountant, is responsible for all the accounting records at Prairie View A M College. HERMAN L. SELMAN. Cashier, is responsible for receipts, and disbursement of college funds, including a banking service for college students. ADMINISTRATION WALTER W. REDD. Purchasing Agent, is responsible for the acquisition of all supplies, materials. equipment, and services at Prairie View A M college. EM I EL W. OWENS. Executive-Secretary. General Alumni Association, coordinates the activities of the Association relative to membership, fund-raising, and special projects and directs the central office on campus. PHILLIP YOUNG, local Alumni Club President, coordinates activities of the local alumni organization. which operates in close connection with the General Association. 25 MARY E. JOHNSON (MRS.). Data Processing Supervisor, is responsible for coordinating the services of the Data Processing Center which is both a business and instructional operation. SAMUEL MONTGOMERY. Assistant to the Registrar, is responsible to the President for official protocol and assists in public Relations and College development. IRENE DAVIS(MRS.) Assistant to the Registrar, supervises the services pertaining to college admission. teacher certification, graduation, transcripts and selective service. HAROLD A. PERKINS. Superintendent. Buildings and Grounds, directs the maintenance of college grounds, campus beautification, and college-wide custodial services. ARLIE E. LeBEAU. Superintendent of Building Maintenance, is responsible for the maintenance of campus buildings and is in charge of transportation. refrigeration, and the disposal plant. Q. I). THOMAS. Outstanding for Southern was the passing of quarterback Joseph Williams. He completed touchdown passes to end Rhomc Nixon, for 12 yards; to Lewis Porter for 93 yards; to Elmo Maples for 61 and 17 yards. In the fourth quarter, Maples scored on another pass from quarterback Harold McLinton. Mark Samples kicked the extra points. The Prairie View A M Panthers dropped their first game of the grid season 7-14 to the Jackson College Tigers in Jackson, Mississippi on September 24. Two long touchdown passes spelled doom for the Panthers who outplayed the Tigers in every other department. Trailing 14-0 at halftime. Prairie View came to life in the third period. Led by Willie Dearion, they carried a drive down to the Tigers’ four yard line where Frank Perry plunged for the score. Janjes Williams kicked the extra point. The Panthers were driving hard near the end of the game, but were stopped on the 25 yard line. PV-GRAMBLING FIGHT TO 10-10 DEADLOCK Playing an inspired ball game, underdog Prairie View A M led Grambling College until final seconds when a Tiger field goal knotted the score 10-10 before 7000 partisan fans on October 1. Halfback James Williams kicked a 19 yard field goal to start Panther scoring underway the first quarter. Early in the second period fullback Frank Perry plunged one yard for a Prairie View Touchdown and Williams converted to give the Panthers a 10-0 lead. Gramblings’ end, Lewis Jackson intercepted a Prairie View pass and scored from six yards out. Wesley Bean kicked for the extra point. Prairie View led 10-7 at the halftime and throughout the second half until 12 seconds before the final whistle. Tiger Harold Jones kicked a 30 yard field goal to tie the score. The Prairie View A M Panthers scored their first win of the season as they blanked Wiley College 21 -0 in the Annual State Fair Classic played in The Cotton Bowl on October 17. A cold rain dampened the spirits of the 5000 who watched Prairie View continue its mastery over the 42 year classic. Prairie View’s James Williams opened the scoring with a PANTHERS SURPRISE ARK. AM N 30-0 Leading only 3-0 at halftime. Prairie View broke loose in the second half as The Panthers rolled over Arkansas AM N 30-0 at Blackshear Field on October 22. Halfback James Williams kicked a 21 yard field goal two minutes before the first half ended. In the third period halfback Uriel Johnson scored on a two-yard plunge following an impressive rushing drive. In the same period quarterback Leon Carr connected with Willie Pollard for a 25 yard touchdown pass. James Williams converted. In the final period James Mitchell caught a 25-yard pass from Carr for a score and Cornelius Cooper blocked. Arkansas’ punt on the 10, recovered the ball and ran for a TD. 30-yard field goal late in the first quarter. Moments later defensive halfback Otto Brown picked up a partially blocked punt and returned it 20 yards for a score. In the second quarter halfback Marshall White caught an eight-yard touchdown pass from Quarterback Robert Hamilton. Prairie View’s final score came on a two-yard plunge by halfback Willie Dcarion in the final period. Kicks failed after each touchdown. STUBBORN MISS. VALLEY LOSES TO PV 17-8 Using pass interceptions as their major advantage, the Prairie View Panthers outscored Mississippi Valley 17-8 in a tremendous battle at Blackshear Field on October 29. The Panthers scored on a 26 yard end run by halfback Willie Dearion early in the second quarter. James Williams kicked the extra point. MVC retaliated minutes later as quarterback Charles Hilliard threw a 79-yard TD pass to David McDaniels. A pass attempt for extra points failed. Leon Carr scored in the third period with Williams converting. Later MVC dropped Carr in the end zone for a safety. With 3 minutes left, Williams kicked an 18 yard field goal for the final score. f r, r Ifr aa FOOTBALL PRAIRIE VIEW WHIPS BISHOP 30-16 IN DALLAS GAME The Prairie View Panthers downed the stubborn Bishop College Tigers 30-16 in Dallas on November 5. Uriel Johnson opened the Panther scoring attack with a 65 yard punt return. James Williams added a 47 yard field goal. Other Panther scoring included a 20 yard TD pass from Leon Carr to end. Alvin Reed: a 2 yard drive by Marshall White and a 3-yard score by Frank Perry. James Williams kicked all but one extra point. PANTHERS UPSET BY ALCORN 19-10 IN HOMECOMING TILT Losing their first Homecoming in over 22 years, the Panthers were completely upset by The Alcorn A M Braves on November 12 as the visitors whipped Prairie View 19-10. Prairie View opened the scoring when halfback Otto Brown intercepted an Alcorn pass and ran 35 yards for a touchdow n. James Williams kicked the extra point. In the second quarter Alcorn's Craig Walker scored on a 15 yard off-tackle run to pay-dirt. The try for conversion by Nathaniel Truitt failed. Panther halfback James Williams kicked a 26 yard field goal to extend Prairie View’s lead to 10-6. In the most sensational run of the game. Alcorn’s Raymond Brown returned a kickoff 85 yards to score. Truitt’s kick for the extra point was good. Neither team scored in the third period but Alcorn scored on a l-yard plunge in the final. PV - WHIPS RIVAL TSU 31-18 IN SWAC CLASSIC HOUSTON — Playing inspired ball, underdog Prairie View A M completely overwhelmed Texas Southern 31-18 on Nov. 19 and reshaped the final SWAC football standings. The Panthers snatched a possible 3-way league championship tie from the Tigers, leaving Grambling and Southern to share the honors alone. For PV. who finished with a 3-3-1 conference record and 3rd place, victory over TSU was extra sweet. TSU scored late in the first period. The Panthers were revitalized in the second half. Marshall White scored twice and Uriel Johnson once in the third period. Leon Carr scored in the same period and White tallied again in the third quarter. Scoring for TSU were Willie Ellison. TENNIS CHAMPS Prairie View’s 1966 Tennis Team made a very impressive showing in the National (NAIA) championships held in Kansas City. Missouri. The Sunday School meets each Sunday morning at 9:15 in the Student Union. It is a student organization with faculty participation and supervision. The objectives of the Sunday School arc: To give the students a philosophy to live by, based upon the principles of Christianity and democracy as exemplified in the life of Christ and other religious leaders: and to give the students an opportunity to develop their talents by participating in organizing and conducting different types of duties and programs. As the largest religious organization, it is an intercollegiate national and international movement. The objective of the YWCA is to express both in deeds and words their conviction of the importance of the Christian way of life, both to the individual and the society.
