This happens because the college has what might be termed as a controlled environment, ond o greot deal of emphasis is placed upon the personal welfare of the individual student. In 1960-61, the college took a serious look ot this matter of culture Viewing with alarm the serious lack of opportunities for social and cultural growth of our young people in Texas communities, the administration decided to step up its emphasis in this area, and proceeded to list cultural development os o major goal of the year's program. The faculty set its annual conference around the cultural theme and established a committee to co-ordinate activities and programs which would be an outgrowth of the conference study. The Research Committee made its annual study to fit in with these objectives, while student organizations ond government joined wholeheartedly in the movement. The goal: Cultural-Social Improvement. The Method: through keys to cultural improvement, as shown graphically developed for the theme of this Yearbook. The Keys: (1) Cultural Appreciation — music, art, literature, the dance; (2) Personal Behavior — courtesy, neatness, social conduct, standards; (3) Social Graces — manners, social skills; (4) Moral and Spiritual Values — a belief in God, in our fellowmen, and in ourselves. Pantherland — 1961 is filled with memories of this important new dimension in our lives at Prairie View. It is our hope that these reminders will always help each of us to grasp firmly the four keys and use them in entering the doors to a richer and more gratifying life of service. Editor-In-Chief Amos C. Johnson tuJWud AppWMtcOfl Social Gwu ORGAVUZATION I.SLO CUSSES __±3___ DM U $mT 0N FKCVJUV 12. ' J. In a way of tribute for his years of inestimable service to Prairie View A. M. College, the staff of the 1961 PANTHER-LAND dedicates this annual to Dr. Curtis A. Wood, Director of Information and Publications, and adviser to student publications and other activities. He is a man of many talents and responsibilities, each of which he fulfills in the highest, most admirable manner: a gentleman, a family man, a scholar, a friend. His dedication to the life of Prairie View stands as a strong contributing force in the progress of our great institution. For your whole-hearted support and sincere personal interest in our welfare, the students of Prairie View wish to express our thanks by dedicating this, THE 1961 PANTHERLAND, to you. Cutu A- Wool 9 There is a plan far greater than the plan you know; There is a landscape broader than the one you see. There is a haven where storm-tossed souls may go — You call it death — we, immortality. You call it death — this seeming endless sleep; We call it birth — the soul at last set free. 'Tis hampered not by time or space — you weep. Why weep at death? Tis immortality. Farewell, dear voyageur — 'twill not be long. Your work is done — now may peace rest with thee. Your kindly thoughts and deeds — they will live on. This is not death — 'tis immortality. Farewell, dear voyageur — the river winds and turns; The cadence of your song wafts near to me, And now you know the thing that all men learn: There is no death — there's immortality. 10 «msm H( to nM aA (Mj fa ■I Governor Price Daniel STATE OF TEXAS Dr. M. J- May I taka this opportunity to congratulate you on your achievement thue far. I must admit that my good wishes stem, to some extent, from the vested interest the Prairie View Alumni Association has in you. It is my sincere belief that when people know more about an individual or organization, they often have a greater appreciation for it. Because I want you to know and appreciate the Prairie View Alumni and Ex-Students Association, I am going to share with you some viewpoints on our Alumni Association. Return to the college campus whenever you can, especially at commencement time, at reunions, homecoming and on other occasions when the college and you can renew acquaintances. You can function effectively as an alumnus only if you know your Alwm Mater and possess a deep sense of appreciation for it and its program. So, lets all of us go out prepared to do your share to raise educational standards, exhibit pride and loyalty to our Alma Mater. G. W. Adams, Pr President Mr. George Loccy '40 To the Class of 1961: What is it? It is a group of college graduates and exstudents who are united to carry out certain purposes designated in its constitution and by-laws. Mrs. Hattie Flowers '32 What then, can you, the present and future alumni, do to assist our Alma Mater most effectively? You can aid by encouraging only the most deserving students to seek admission, a service, which in turn, reflects itself in the quality of the alumni tomorrow. You can assure moral and financial support which will extend over the years. You can stand ready to defend her royal colors—the purple and the gold. You can identify yourself actively with a local alumni club in your cocnunity so that you can share in the life of your Association and your Alma Mater. You can keep the Alumni offico posted regarding your work, your aspirations and achievements, so that it can continue to encourage you and inspire others through you. You can tell others about the association and the college, its advantages and opportunities, without boasting or making insidious comparisons. Wood VU Smbij School The College Sundoy School is non-denominotionol ond ond non-compulsory, which meets each Sundoy morning ot 9:15. It is o student organization with voluntary faculty participation and supervision. All officers — superintendent, assistant superintendent, secretary, assistant secretary, treasurer, and others — ore elected from the student body ond by students in attendance. They perform in keeping with the duties of the office to which they arc elected. There arc two divisions of the Sundoy School: (1) Senior, which is composed of college students ond foculty members; (2) Junior, which is composed of campus ond community children of kindergarten through senior high school oges. Foculty members serve os teachers of the college classes, whereos housewives supervise and teach in the junior department. The objectives of the Sunday School are: (1) To give the students a philosophy to live by bosed upon the principles of Christianity ond democracy os exemplified in the life of Christ and other religious leaders; (2) To give the students an opportunity to develop their talents by participating in organizing and conducting different types of duties and progroms; (3) As we ore non-denominational ond freedom of speech and expression are allowed, they become tolerant of different denominations and religious concepts and practices. We believe that rccrcotion and education should be the responsibility of religious orgonizotions. We have, in the past, sponsored the following: Educational tours to Mexico, Mardi Gras and other historical points; Religious Oramotic ploys hove been produced by members of the Sundoy School; visiting lecturers; parties and picnics hove been a part of the program. Most recently, we hove sponsored campus wide com-poigns for cultural development such as, No Profanity Week, Club-Day at Sundoy School, and others. In honor of the late J. M. The story of sports at Prairie View A M parallels the history of Negro athletics in the great Southwest. President E. B. Evans was one of the founders of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, a league always considered one of the strongest anywhere. His leadership and keen othletic interest has inspired the Panther teams to give their best in each contest. The year 1929 stonds as a londmork in PV athletic history. The great Cotton Bowl Classic, held each year wos started ot this time as well as the Prairie View Bowl, the second oldest bowl game in the nation. The Panthers had greot football teams in those days, as they do now, but track and tennis were also sports in which the college excelled. In Football, the Panthers have won nine (9) conference championships—in 1931, 1933, 1941, 1951, 1953, 1954, 1958, and co-champions in 1960. This year is one of the best for Panther basketball teams. The only other championship for PV was in 1950. Prairie View hos won numerous track and tennis titles throughout our athletic history. Eight SWC conference track titles hove been won in recent years — 1948, 49, 50, 51, 53, 56, ond 1958. Six (6) singles and six doubles tennis championships have been won since 1947. Before the big Southwest clash Southern was riding the crest with important victories over powerful Grambling and Florida A. and M. The Panthers had eliminated Tennessee State a week earlier. Southwestern Conference fans now view the I960 notional grid race os o four-way deadlock, with Prairie View, Southern, Grambling and Florida sharing the prize equally. All four teams ended the regular season with nine wins against one defeat. Each loss by these teams was to one of the other four. Prairie View lost to Grambling, Florida and Grambling dropped decisions to Southern and finally Prairie View whipped Southern. 188 !%0 Smoki 'KuouL 1960 FOOTBALL RESULTS Sept. 27 Prairie View 24 Oct. 1 35 Oct. 8 9 Oct. 17 36 Oct. 24 0 Oct. 29 17 Nov. 5 37 Nov. 12 45 Nov. 19 21 Nov. 26 23 Dec. 31 19 Opponent Jackson College 12 Texas Southern 28 Allen University 6 Wiley College 15 Grambling 26 Arkansas State 8 Texas College 6 Bishop College 15 Tennessee State 0 Southern University 15 Arkansas (P.
