I introducing Annual Student Publication A 4 M College of Zem foreword College days are priceless days. They will become more priceless and invaluable as the years roll by, and we can only dream of them as days-gone-by, days that we met our friends, teachers, and loved ones, days thot we worked and played together and the day that Prairie View girded up her loins and plunged into the space age. Stored away in the volume of this treasured chest, lest you forget, are the memories of the days that you will later embrace and fiercely guard as the remnants of the golden days spent on the Hill. And as you reminisce through these pages, we of the Panther staff, sincerely hope that you vividly recollect the friends that you knew and loved so dearly, the teachers that you cared for, those that you couldn't stand, tho clubs and organizations with which you wore associated and regarded so highly. You will stop and take a deep breath as you relive through those tense and suspending football and basketball games. Oh how unconsciously boisterous you were in cheering the boys on to victory, and how dejected and silent you were when they were losing! You will also see again the nights of those wild bonfires and pep rallies when school spirit was riding high. The now student union building now in construction promises to be one of the most fabulous in the Southwest, but will it ever take the place of the Panther Inn, the Rec ? Doesn t the Rec remind you of a student rushing to the snack bar to hurriedly get his cup of coffee or hamburger, then on to the TV room to catch his favorite show, or to go to the game room to argue all afternoon over a game of whist or ping pong? You will wonder if your three years spent in Suarez, Alexander, and the other dormitories were as enjoyable as your freshman year in Lucky and the Vets. The Education, Science, and Engineering buildings will remind you of those long and lonely nights when you had to stay up and cram for either an A or F. You will remember the pie man and the midnight snacks, the shrill and squeaky radio, tho loud and booming record players, the telephone ringing, the matron and proctor. You will long for those days under the trees, and then you will stop and think of good old Dean Evans and Fuller. You will wish for just one more date night or college social, most especially those swinging general student dances (wrestling matches). The KOB fashion show and the Black and White Ball will never be forgotten. You can't help but get tickled when you think of the dining hall and good old lady Carpenter. We were always complaining about tho food! Yet you were always cutting line to get it. Chapel services will remind you of Rev. Phillips. Vesper will remind you of the President's Annual talk to the student body. The senior garden reminds you of Jean or Tom. Say! What happened? Why didn't they marry? Or did they? The 1958-59 school year was a wonderful one. We had the best of time, and had the worst of time, our successes were many, and failures few. We will always be proud of a great administration and competent faculty and staff that were so dedicated to a greater Prairie View. In conclusion, we hope that your school year was a wonderful adventure. And some day when the reality of it is all over, the annual staff invites you to droam pleasant dreams of your golden school days of long ago. Your graduation comes at a time when education is of utmost importance in our national life. The future • pace age is one which will lean heavily upon brain power. Actually education is now trying to catch up with our present technological progreat. The possession of knowledge and information will be uppermost among needs in the space age, but Belt-realization is also vital. Always remember that there is no substitute for honesty, decency, truth, self respect, love for others, virtue and Christian ideals and deeds. Smith on the occasion of her retirement from the college on May 31, 1959. Mrs. Smith's outstanding services to the college and to the youth of this state have been fully recognized. She was named Woman-of-the-Year by the Zeta's Sorority and a testimonial banquet was held in her honor at the college on May 9. Prosidont’s Banquot for Honor Studonts. Religious Zhe Sunday School Junior-Senior College Group Another entity in the religious life of Prairie View students is the College Sunday School. It is non-denominational. non-compulsory, and meets each Sunday morning at 9:15. It is a student organization with' voluntary faculty participation and supervision. All officers are students in attendance. They perform in keeping with the duties of the office to which they are elected. There are two divisions of the Sunday School: (I) Senior, which is composed of college students and faculty members (2) Junior, which is composed of campus and community children of kindergarten through senior high school ages. Faculty members serve as teachers of the college classes, whereas housewives supervise and teach in the junior department. It has its own superintendent and other elected officers. Working together in this division for the good of these children and program are Mrs. W. H. Stickney, Mrs. A. N. Poindexter, Mrs. T. H. Wright, Mrs. G. R. Woolfolk and Mrs. W. L. Cash. The objectives of the Sunday School ore: (I) To give the students a philosophy to live by based upon the principles of Christianity and democracy, (2) To give the students an Frothmon ond Sophomoro Cloit Junior-Sonior Organizations opportunity to develop their talents by participating in organizations and conducting different types of duties and programs, (3) Since the Sunday School is non-denominational, freedom of speech and expression are allowed; therefore, the students become tolerant of different denominations and religious concepts and practices. Over the years many worthwhile projects have been initiated and sponsored by the Sunday School. The educational tours to historical spots in Texas, adjoining states and Old Mexico; a college wide Non-Profanity Week, Faculty Personnel Day at the Sunday School, when administrators and staff members are invited to speak to us; and Club Day when other student organizations are asked to worship with us and render a program before the group, are some of the more important projects. Each year in honor of the late J. M. Alexander, former Faculty Superintendent of the Sunday School, an award of $50.00 is given to the student selected os the one who has contributed most to the Sunday School's program during the current year. This year it went to Miss Neverro Harris. Working with Dr. T. P. Dooley, Faculty Supervisor, are Mrs. Zelio S. Coleman, who teaches a sophomore class; Mr. Eric Johnson who teaches a freshman class; Dr. A. A. Dun-son has a class of juniors and seniors: Dr. Roscoe Lewis has a class of high school juniors and seniors; and Mr. Richard Price has a group of adult employees. The student leaders are Cecil L. Strickland, Superintendent; Woodio McClellan, Assistant Superintendent: Charlotte Washington, Secretary; Howard Daniels, Treasurer; and Calvin Bluiett, Assistant Treasurer. The Eastern Trip also included many college contests going and returning to P.V. Chapter adviser. Organized in 1938, its primary purpose is to assist prospective vocational agriculture teachers in becoming good local N.F.A. chapter advisers. The organization and operation of the collegiate chapter aro in harmony with the purposes and ideals of the state and national organizations of New Farmers of America, under whose authority is chartered. The local group is composed of one main or general chapter and four class chapters, each having a core of student officers and adult advisers. Each year the chapter sponsors leadership contest, educational tours, social and recreational activities such as: chapter conducting, which provides training and skill in conducting meetings. Our activities include support of various college programs and emphasizing The Spoken Word in its many forms (often dramatically presented). The Barons of Innovation are the most prosperous social organization for young men on the campus. The Barons are noted for their conservativeness. They pride themselves on their discreetness in methods and manners of operating. The Barons of Innovation organized in 1951 and in doing so. organized one of the most outstanding clubs on the campus. The B.O.I., as they are often called, has maintained this status throughout their existence by exemplifying brotherhood, better college living, high scholarship, high moral character, and bringing forth new ideas. A crowd of 7.000 watched the Panthers take immediate possession of the game early in the first period. Halfback Calvin Scott, co-captain, carried over for five yards for the first of an eight touchdown attack. Quarterback David Webster hurled a pass to Scott for the first two points additional score. The Panthers scored early in the first quarter following a successful 28 yard pass thrown by quarterback David Webster to Frank McKee which moved the ball to Jackson's 3-yard line. Prairie View A M College Panthers deal a surprising 44-6 blow to the top rated Grambling College Tigers here Saturday night. The Panthers took the opening kick and marched downfield for the initial tally, with halfback Calvin Scott driving off tackle to score. The Tigers took only one play to even the score as Don Stephenson ran straight through the Panther line for on 86-yard touchdown. Archie Seals, speedy sophomore Panther back, rose to the occasion as he struck for three consecutive tallies, actually routing the game for the Texans. His gallant offensive was backed by a determined Panther defense that literally stopped the Tigers on their feet. PRAIRIE VIEW, TEXAS: . . . The Prairie View A M College Panthers turned a would-be championship battle into complete riot, blanking the Texas College Steers 43-0 at Blackshear Field today before 10.000 Homocoming fans. The surprising run-away victory over the undefeated Steers gave the Panthers a stronger hold on the top spot in the Southwestern Conference, and set up their November 29 battle with Southern University in Houston as the real championship match. The Prairie View A M College Panthers, powered their way to a 20-14 victory over a determined Southern University Jaguars to claim the Southwestern Conference championship here tonight before a crowd of I 1.000 chilled but enthusiastic fans. The thrilling climax to on erratic conference season left the Panthers undefeated and undisputed champs. It also placed the victors at the top of the heap in Negro college football in the nation, their first national championship since the great team of 1953 and 1954. The Prairie View A M College Panthers spoiled an otherwise perfect Homecoming for Wiley College by defeating the Wildcats 13-0 before a crowd of 5000 spectators. After a scoreless first half, the Panther offense began to click early in the third period. Quarterback David Webster passed six yards to Calvin Scott who raced 29 yards to the Wildcats' one yard line. On the next play. Scott ploughed through the middle for the initial score. Coach The Panther Track Team had an excellent year in Conference Competition and special meets. The team finished in second place in the SW Conference finals, but managed to win six first places in individual events. Albert Nunn and David Fant, the perennial distance champions, placed one-two in the mile and the two-mile runs. Nunn set a new conference run in the mile with a 4:26.2. Fant also set a new record when he posted a 9:35.9 in the two-mile run. Prairie View also set another new record, established by Herbert Lee's 12 9 pole vault leap. Lester Porter won the Discus Throw with a toss of 148 feet. James Kennedy won two first places—the broad jump and the low hurdles.
