And it happened at the expense of Wilson, the basketball thumping school from Chicago. What it was, was the first victory ever for a Prairie State wrestling team. However, the wrestling squad was far from being finished as it conquered Amundsen at home and onthe road, to turn a dismal season into a fairly successful one. Leading the grappling Gophers were Al Parker, Tony Murphy, Terry Rauen, Dave John- son. Dennis Dallas and George Cox. Lee Petterson, nicknamed The Doc. coached the team. 78 x X4 Clolf What appeared to be a building year for the Prairie State golfteam, was in actuality a productive, winning season. Walt Kusay took the honors as top golfer, appearing as the medalist for State in all of the dual matches. Walt averaged 74 strokes per round as the Gophers tied for sixth in the Northern Illinois Conference standings. Coached by Bob Rehberg, the Gophers appear to be ready to tee off on all upcoming opponents next year. Kusay, who is scheduled to return with the other three golfers, John Ciaccio, Bob Velo and Randy Meyers, form the nucleus ofa very line squad. Speakers included Dr. Richard W. Hostrop and Steve Rice, president of Student Government. Fol- lowing the speakers were various singing groups and comedy skits, put on to entertain the students who braved the cold to attend. Mock Election Students held a mock election in the closing days of the 1968 presidential campaign, Nixon's victory was no surprise. Prairie State's first musical was directed by Richard Peterson. The plot is based on a Washington Senators fan, played by Bob Abel, who sells his soul tothe devil. By doing so he be- comes hard-hitting Joe Hardy, portrayed by Mark Lewan- dowski, and brings the Senators to victory over the Yankees. K 4114 Other leading cast members include Paul Frederick as Mr. Applegate, the devil, and Valerie Piacenti as Lola, who tempts Joe to forget his wife, Meg, played by Roseann Mat- tio. Mike Moorman, manager ofthe team, and Audrey Wladyka as Gloria Thorpe, who stirs controversy over Joe's unusual abilities, round out the cast. These principals are supported by other actors, singers, dan- cers, and the chorus. Behind the scenes were the stage man- ager, Randy Bunger, and the student director, Cathy McGonigal. 10 .41 'ii I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I. Qi u 1 59 'A if, I I 196 -69 in Retrospect This was a schizophrenic year of transition. We started classes a week late, with split shifts, in the old Bloom college building. The new, temporary buildings on the muddy North campus were not ready until October. Classes com- peted with carpenters, tile workers, electricians and air con- ditioning men. Somehow, Prairie State did not gain a full identity of its own. Activities drew few participants. Events had sparse attendance. The cross-country team gave up in mid-season. The baseball squad numbered I2 men. 0nly one runner turned out for spring track. The Prairie Statement pub- lished erratically, with little news, but with a sparkling new format that augered a better day. One bright spot was the basketball team, which enjoyed a winning season, even though rooters from visiting junior col- leges often outnumbered our own supporters. The tennis team went to the national finals. The big social events - the Christmas dance, Damn Yan- kees and the Spring formal - were successful. But the most progress was demonstrated in education itself. Prairie State broadened its curriculum, and sent its roots out into the community, with a well-supported evening curricu- lum. Despite a prolonged dispute over salaries, the faculty gained stature, and laid the groundwork for productive years ahead. li - 2 XNXN lliii J- ' I I ll I I I I I I it I I I I I II I I I II lx, il II I I I I il -I I I I I I l I lg Looking Ahead Somehow, 1970-71 will see Prairie State rising as a phoe- nix. Under the leadership of President Richard W. Hostrop, the college is beginning to fulfill its role as an institution for the entire community. Although four out of five students fol- low college bound studies, an increasing number are prepar- ing for careers in vocationally-oriented curriculum, Prairie State will increase in importance as the new Gover- nors State University in Park Forest South prepares to open its doors in September, 1973 e possibly earlier, Construction of Prairie State's new permanent campus e delayed by Governor Richard B. Ogilvie's order - will give the college an identity of its own: a community institution dedicated to preparing its graduates for living productive whole lives.
