The Board appointed Dr. Richard W. Hostrop as president of the college and selected the architectural firm of Perkins and Will to design the district's first campus. lt reviewed and approved working drawings for the 20 million dollar campus expected for partial completion and use in l970. To make the campus a reality, the voters of the district, by a margin of nearly 311, approved a Board recommended 7. 9 million dollar bond issue. lt is anticipated that this local effort will be matched by the state in the amount of l5 million dollars. The Board reviewed a number of names submit- ted as a suitable name for the first College. After several months of consideration and deliberation, Prairie State College was the name selected. 18 PRAIRIE STATE this school year has been un- der the direction of Dr. Richard W. Hostrop, who took over the duties of school president, june, l967. Under Dr. I-lostrop's leadership decisions have been finalized in naming the new school QPRAIRIE STATE COLLEGEJ, in presenting a successful 7. 9 million dollar bond issue to the public for passage, in planning and installing new methods of curriculum presentation, in selecting and completing plans for the new HALSTED Street campus. 0 Dr. Hostrop R 115 JOSEPH L. As rep- resentatives of the student body, the officers are responsible for the organization and promotion of dances and other social activities. This year the student government has sent representatives to the Illinois Association of junior Colleges Convention, which was held in Peoria, Ill. The ideas gathered at the meeting aided in giving the student government the power and the recognition needed to be a successful organization. l 39 S.A.C. The first issue of the PRAIRIE STATEMENT, October 10, 1967 was in fact the 515 NEWS. The headline in that issue announced that Dr. Richard W. Hostrop was named to head Illinois junior College District 515. News of the student elections also made the front page. Rick Hartman became Freshman Class President in a run-off election with Dave Patrizig Cory Cameron was elected Vice President. The edition of October 26 was significant because it heralded the Boards decision to officially name college District 515, Prairie State College. This was also the first issue of the paper under the name PRAIRIE STATEMENT. The front page of the November 9 issue dealt with the Prairie State College referendum which won approval at the polls on November 18, 1967. The lead story on November 22 was the result of a student poll in which they were asked their preference concerning school mascot and colors. Gophers and brown and gold was the overwhelming choice of the student body. The results were not made official however, until the March 21 Board meeting. Coach jack Rudy's basketball team, spurred by Victor Washington and Clarence Bud Mocco were threatening an unbeaten season in the December 7 issue. The January 25 issue announced the coronation of Tom Einhorn and Michelle Noel as king and queen of the Christmas Ball. The February 27 issue proclaimed that under the direction of Mr. Richard Peterson the Prairie State Players would present their first full scale production, LOOK HOMEWARD ANGEL. The PRAIRIE STATEMENT came of age with the March 7 issue and took vehement exception to an administrative decision not to renew the contracts of two instructors. The March 21 issue gave coverage to an orderly Student Demonstration protesting the aforementioned dismissal of two instructors. Now we must look forward--to our future and the future of Prairie State College. lll an AJS- A 35.- Af. w iv? if 7 f S Z ,aa W wwwms px Z 5 , K 4 V.,f V, Q PosT SCRIP'f' by PIM.
