Language Develops One of the most dramatic changes in foreign language instruction has taken place within the past several years. This perhaps is due partly to the fact that emphasis is now being placed upon learning the language speaking it. The language laboratory serves as invaluable adjunct to foreign language instruction of today. The language laboratory does not replace the teacher but it enables him and the students to do things that they cannot do in the classroom. Through regularly scheduled lab sessions, the stu- dents receive concentrated drill and practice for fifteen to twenty minutes, over material which has first be en introduced in the classroom by the teacher. In the laboratory, the students are provided with a variety of authentic native voices which serve as untiring models. Students receiving concentrated drill. The busy juniors under Mr. Meeks study hard to get their English Assignments. Junior Everett, Sharon Sanders, Cherry Boyer, and Sue Young preparing a speech for Speech Class.

Understanding From the console, the teacher can monitor the students, briefly correcting individual students with- out interrupting the work of others. The headphones and partitions give the students a reassuring sense of privacy and reduce distractions, thus encouraging concentration. Some booths are equipped with facilities which allow the student to record the program coming from the console and, at the same time, record his responses. He can then play back the recording and compare his responses with that of the model. Through the help of the teacher, he can analyze and correct his errors. We feel that the language laboratory is, and will continue to be, an invaluable aid to foreign language learning in our school Miss Harshberger using the console to teach the fundamentals of Spanish. Mr. Glick keeps his German class busy and happy. mm
