We have lived one year in this building, but this year has been a preview of the educational opportunities ahead for all of us, and we should take advantage of the many facilities available in curricular and extracurricular activities. Let us show our appreciation by being responsible, educated citizens produced by the: PRAIRIE HEIGHTS COMMUNITY SCHOOLS. 4 v.W, I CS8 ■Ji ffi ' it , « • J$ dfJP ftfa | ft i Science Provide The planetarium, our pride and joy, is a room in which a projector casts images of the stars and planets on a hemisherical dome. The instruments are used inteaching the fundamentals of astronomy including such things as constellations, motions of planets, groups of stars, and facts about stars. ' They also help introduce the students to the current missile programs connected with space science. Beginning with next year, Mr. Noffsinger hopes to organize an advanced course in space science and astronomy, he plans to start teaching astronomy to fifth grade students who would come to the planetarium two or threetimes a year, and eventually provide adult edu- cation courses in astronomy. Mr. Noffsinger points out parts of the projector while students observe. One of the many aspects of biology class that students find interesting, is viewing microscopic organisms. Modern math is one of the outstanding courses added to our new curriculum. Advanced Training Gene Graves, Dave Singleton, and David Store are doing an experiment. They are finding it challenging to work in our new chemistry lab. Language Develops One of the most dramatic changes in foreign language instruction has taken place within the past several years. This perhaps is due partly to the fact that emphasis is now being placed upon learning the language speaking it. The language laboratory serves as invaluable adjunct to foreign language instruction of today. The language laboratory does not replace the teacher but it enables him and the students to do things that they cannot do in the classroom. Through regularly scheduled lab sessions, the stu- dents receive concentrated drill and practice for fifteen to twenty minutes, over material which has first be en introduced in the classroom by the teacher. In the laboratory, the students are provided with a variety of authentic native voices which serve as untiring models. Students receiving concentrated drill. The busy juniors under Mr. Meeks study hard to get their English Assignments. Junior Everett, Sharon Sanders, Cherry Boyer, and Sue Young preparing a speech for Speech Class. Understanding From the console, the teacher can monitor the students, briefly correcting individual students with- out interrupting the work of others. The headphones and partitions give the students a reassuring sense of privacy and reduce distractions, thus encouraging concentration. Some booths are equipped with facilities which allow the student to record the program coming from the console and, at the same time, record his responses. He can then play back the recording and compare his responses with that of the model. Through the help of the teacher, he can analyze and correct his errors. We feel that the language laboratory is, and will continue to be, an invaluable aid to foreign language learning in our school Miss Harshberger using the console to teach the fundamentals of Spanish. Mr. Glick keeps his German class busy and happy. mm Our Library = Prairie Heights is justly proud of its spacious beautiful library. It is the realization of Mr. Diehl ' s belief that the library should be the hut of the school, a source of reference for all departments, and a place for study or pleasure reading under ideal conditions. The furnishings and general decor contribute to an atmosphere of dignity and an appreciation for good books, magazines and periodicals, reading which is vital to the education of students in all fields. Literature and Tranquility At the present time, approximately four thousand books are shelved or are being processed for use. Many more are requisitioned and will arrive soon. As time goes on, the library will become more and more a part of every student ' s learning experience, as new books, a vertical file and other materials are added. Today ' s Student ' s— Tomorrow Homemakers The Home Living Center is designed to provide an atmosphere within which the acquisition of living-dining skills will be more meaningful. Our clothing room provides up-to-date equipment for clothing room construction. This includes modern sewing machines, table space for cutting and assembling garments and pressing equipment to use in making well fitted, attractive garments. It has been said that the kitchen is the heart of the home, and this may be equally true of a homemaking department. Our Five Unit, well-arranged kitchens make meal preparation easier and more enjoyable. Gracious Living A stitch in time saves nine 1 ' Baking cookies for open house. Traveling to Knowledge Administration Boulevard Faculty Avenue Faculty Superintendent To the Students of Prairie Heights Jr. § Sr. High School Between the covers of this book you will find the threads and fibre to weave the mighty bonds of friend- ship that you will value through future years. The following stu- dents have been elected to lead the Organization in this conquest. Ned Eckert, Sandy Halsey, Wanda Wathen, Ronnie Mikkelson, and Donnie Bachelor. President: N. Eckert, Sec: S. Society The president of Auburn N.H.S. assists in the instal- lation of the first members of our chapter. The lighting of the torch signifies the offical act of becoming a National Honor Society member. The National Honor Society, which consists of twelve seniors, eight juniors, and five sophomores, selected by the faculty members on the basis of scholarship, leadership, service, and character, was formed for the first time this year. In order to determine members for the society, the teachers had to wait for the first semester transcript of grades. Consequently, the Society received little opportunity to conduct many activities or programs for the year 1966. The members paid dollar dues which were used in purchasing National Honor Society awards. Solemn parents are bursting with pride, as they watch their children take the National Honor Society oath. The book has more pages and pictures than ever before. Even color was added to make a more at- tractive book for its viewers. It was a new, interesting experience for most of the staff members. They accepted the obligation and responsi- bility of yearbook publication by long working hours at planning and placing together pictures, copy material, etc., into a yearbook copy. Accepting the leadership roles as co-editors were Linda Kellett and Sandy Halsey. Bob Getts and Harold Conley edited the sports section. Cherry Boyer and Ronnie Mikkelson served as copy editors. The business manager duties were filled by Joyce Ernsberger while Sara Jo Cline, Karen Gage, and Keith Dunkel capably handled the proof reading. The artist on the staff was Wanda Hostetler. In addition to their other duties, Wanda Hostetler and Ronnie Mikkelson super- vised the advertising campaign, and Linda Booth, Marilyn Powers served as subscription managers. Der Deutsche Verein German Club The German Club is obviously a society for those in- terested enrolled in a German class. It ' s objective is largely to expose students to things of cultural interest related to the language, such as special films, guest speakers, field trips, and in general, some good old German (Spass) (fun). Most of these experiences cannot be provided in the classroom, so the German Club is organized to complement c lassroom drills and exercises. An additional objective is to provide a situation for students to practice and apply their knowledge of German in a normal situation free from inhibition of saying the wrong thing. Officers: Corrine Kain President, Marva Rumsey Secre- tary along with their sponsor Mr. Glick. Las Amigas The Spanish Club The Spanish Club organized this year to provide ad- titional culture-related activities not included in a more formal class of Spanish. The constitution states the purpose of the club as follows: The purpose of this club will be the practice of Spanish and the familiarization of the customs and the literature of the Spanish people. The membership of the club is traditional- -letter in a major school sport. This great band of letter-winning Panthers began the year ' s activities by putting their trust in the following officer: Harold Conley, President, (pictured below). Later in the spring, the Lettermen sponsored their first big activity — the athletic Banquet. The Banquet took place in May in our own cafetorium. Coaches, cheerleaders, and members of the athletic squads were guests at the event. The Letterman ' s President, Harold Conley, views the new trophy case. It is with great desire of the club ' s personnel to fill the case with many cherished mementoes. Student Council 1 ill N W m ' •Mi) ft l v% m9 V h _ -c ' r FIRST ROW: J. Graham, R. Fritz, D. Future Farmers of America The FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA, or FFA as it is commonly known, is the national organization of, by, and for boys studying vocational agriculture in public secondary schools under the provisions of the National Vo- cational Education Acts. The FFA is an intra-curricular activity having its origin and root in a definite part of the school curriculum — vocational agriculture. Among other things, members leam through active participation how to conduct and take part in a public meeting; to speak in public; to buy and sell cooperatively; to solve their own problems; to finance themselves; and to assume civic responsibility. The foundation upon which the FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA organization is built includes leadership and character development, sportsmanship, cooperation, serv- ice, thrift, scholarship, improved agriculture, organized recreation, citizenship and patriotism. Prairie Heights Gridiron squad started the 1965 season with no experienced players and a world of hopes. Nine- teen boys turned out for the bruising sport and began their drills on the warmest August weather under the watchful eyes of Coach Jack Kenyon, and Assistant Coach Paul Greshaw. The line positions were settled by Craig Siders, Tim Peace, John McElroy, Keith Dunkel, Ron Ernsburger, Jack Wren, Harold Conley, Tim Diehl, and Jeff Clauson. Gary Levitz, Doug Levitz, and Jeff Butler shared the halfback positions. Jim Gick took the fullback job and John Kessler was the starting quarter- back. Lack of reserve strength was a constant bugaboo to Coach Kenyon as could be seen in many of the harder fought games. As the season progressed, Jim Sleeper, Kirk Aldrich, Richard Ernsburger, Steve Beer, and George Compton began turning in some fine pieces of relief work. Reviewing the gridiron season as a whole, even with its ups and downs, the Panthers showed the charac- teristics of creating a solid foundation for the sport of football in the years to come at the Prairie Heights Community School. 9th Grade Basketball S. NET PANTHERS CLAW HARD IN LOSING SEASON Shortly after the football season closed, the nets were put up and the hardwood boys began their nightly workouts on the basketball court. Bob Getts was the only returning letterman from the 65-66 squad to give the Panthers somewhat of an inexperienced group. Early drills proved that the Panthers would be handicapped by lack of height and this fact materialized as the season wore on. Coach Spahr worked hard with the squad, but it was a long season as only one victory was recorded. Fighting an uphill battle throughout the year against all opponents; they proved their true peak in the sec- tional when they drew the tough Freemont team. An upset was almost in the making as Freemont narrowly squeezed out a victory by the score of 55 to 50. Because of the fact that there were only two seniors on the team this year, Prairie Heights should have a much improved season for 66-67. We ' ll raise the old cry wait till next year. Pictured above are the boys that saw most of the action for the team this past year. In the near future with proper care, this diamond will compare with any in the area. The team started the season off poorly by losing the first four ball games. The first victory came against Lakeland by a 2-1 score. This was by far the best effort of the season. The team played errorless ball backed up by a one-hit pitching performance by Bob Getts. The first win on Prairie Height ' s diamond was against Bronson. A loss seemed unavoidable as the Bronson was leading 13-6 going into the last inning. The Panthers rallied for seven runs to tie the score and then scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to win 16- 14. High School Field and Track FRONT ROW: D. Lash, S. Heckler, R. Albright, J. PANTHER SPRINTERS FIND ROUGH PATH —BUT FUTURE LOOKS GOOD Coach Jack Kenyon, though expressing optimism at times knew that rough path lay ahead. The vast number of boys who turned out in April were unexperienced but displayed a wealth of ability. The only lettermen returning from the 1965-66 cinder runners were Steve Heckler, Gary Levitz, Steve Frey, and Jeff Butler. The Panthers ' prime power was in the distance events. The thinly clads who were carrying the burden in the two-mile are Beiswanger and Luttman ; Compton and Outcalt in the one- mile. Dick Lash and Jeff Butler handle the one-half mile. Steve Heckler capably put the shot, while Siders usually leads the way in the 440. Coach Kenyon expressed that since many of the track mem- bers are underclassmen, the Panther cindermen will claw many enemies in the future. Qualified for sectional in the two-mile event. If you could see Mr. Cline ' s face you could tell how proud he is of all these fine young students. This year, the National Honor Society was officially launched by inducting 27 charter mem- bers. Therefore, every mem- ber was given a pin or charm at the Awards Program. 4 s $ £ . 9 QUEEN AND COURT Jean Bell was crowned our 1966 Queen at the annual Sweetheart Dance sponsored by the cheer- leaders. Jean was the candidate for the Sophomore class. Her reign was brief but eventful, providing a perfect combination of beauty and tradition for the Valentine ' s Day program. Jean ' s Court consisted of Ruby Hunter, Grade 12; Tonnie Selvon, Grade 11; Pam Young, Grade 9; Linda Spillner, Grade 8; Kathy Conner, Grade 7. Kathy Conner, Tonnie Selvon, Jean Bell, Ruby Hunter, Pam Young, Linda Spillner. GO VERNMENT A CTIVITIES The senior government officers are: Ruby Hunter, Wanda Wathen, Paul Richards, and Linda Booth. Seniors study Federalist and Nationalist Party plat- forms at a joint session of Congress. OUR FEARLESS LEADER To Mrs. Minks: The Government classes ex- press a vote of thanks for your guidance in their government activities. This year the government classes elected officers to plan and promote various governmental activities, and this way each student became more familiar with elections. We held a joint session of Congress, took a field trip to Notre Dame Law School, and some students were jurors for a mock court trial in South Bend. At the beginning of the elected officers term it was decided that the class would have speakers come to the school and tell about various types of government and different countries. So, during the course of the year we heard lectures and interesting news from Mr. Wayne Hughes, Republican Representative from the Fourth District, and from Mr. John D. Shiraef, an expert on Russia and the Russian people. Parties, Dances, and Study— Cafetorium Style The cafetorium served as the prime location for many school parties. One of the classic gatherings was the Hobo party sponsored by the school publication group. Crowned Hobo King and Queen. His Majesty Keith Dun- kel. Her Highness Marilyn Powers. We Will Always Remember . . . The do-it-yourself Photographer Club. The Engineer explaining the flip flops of a computer during a special assembly program. PROM OF NINETEEN Lynn Kressley, senior class president, responds to the address given by the junior class president, Harold Conley. Students look upon the gay assortment of salads. The deluxe salad table and delicious food was prepared by our cooks. Entertainment for the banquet was provided by talented students and teachers from Prairie Heights. A various assortment of enchanting music was played by the Rhythmaires during the prom. HUNDRED AND SIXTY-SIX As the juniors and seniors enter with their dates, the most common comment is: Boy, this sure doesn ' t look like the gymnasium. It looks more like a night club. Indeed it did. The juniors really outdid themselves on deco- rations. KING AND QUEEN King and Queen, Jim Coler and Linda Kellett smile radiantly for the camera as they receive their royalty from Mrs. Miller and Mr. McGlennen. Nothing now is left but the majestic memory Longfellow MOTTO: Face the Sun and the Shadows Will Fall Behind FLOWER: Blue Carnation COLORS: Baby Blue and White PROM THEME: A Shower of Stars Young ladies and gentlemen danced romantically in all of their splendor under a Shower of Stars. Many carried out the old tradition of taking your best guy or gal to the Junior Senior Prom, which made the occasion more beautiful. Many wished it over, many hoped it would last forever, but everyone will remem- ber the wonderment of it all for as long as they may live. COMMENCEMENT Donald Austin receives his long-awaited diploma. I  -r VALEDICTORIAN SALUTATORIAN BEFORE AND . . . Just prior to Graduation the seniors line up in the hall proudly awaiting their big moment. Each person is anxious to receive his or her diploma, but yet each person is sad to leave school. For it is in this school where these students have made friends, engaged in social activities and found security. Seniors, some joyous and some sad, congratulate each other after their long-awaited event. Noweachperson will go his own way seeking the new and exciting by leaving the old and well-known routine of school. Some will go on to higher education, some will raise families, some will find jobs and become in- fluential in their communities, and some will serve in the armed services. These students who are about to embark on the threshold of life have been guided by their teachers for the past twelve years--now each student, with the help of God, is his own guide. 107 And now the doors of P.H.H.S. are closed to the seniors of sixty-six, but as they are closed forever a new door is opened, a new life is waiting for those who last walked these halls, and behind these doors lies the road to the future .
