ROW 2; Mr. Charles Ploetz; Mr. Kenneth Poppy, District Superintendent; Mr. Wendelin Ballweg. Consolidation Brings Decisions This past year both the School Board and Stu- dent Council have worked ardently in playing their part in consolidation. While the school boards were consolidated, the two councils held only a few joint meetings. The board has accomplished much this year but hasn't seen the end yet. The ground was broken for the new Sauk-Prairie High School De- cember 19, soon after the official bids on it were accepted. The understudy of the Board, the Student Coun- cil, has achieved many of its goals this year also. A new school song, an emblem, and school colors were chosen under the direction of the Council. This organization sponsored dress-up and hard- time days in addition to planning the Halloween and Christmas parties and activity nights. To these two groups, the students owe an ex- pression of appreciation. STUDENT COUNCIL MEMBERS -- ROW 1: Connie Balfanz; Cris Anlauf; Phil Winiger, vice- president; Sue Hamacher; Mr. Alfred Ness, Advisor. Busy Tear; Many Changes Prairie's class schedule underwent a complete change. There were 55 minute periods, instead of last year's seventy minutes, with a home room each day. This period was the time when class meetings, assemblies, and activities were scheduled. Band was held during home room and all athletic practices were scheduled after school. Changes in school activities were also made. Unnecessary noon hour driving was eliminated and a new dance policy was set up. These revisions in the school system caused a busy year for Mr. Ness and Mr. Poppy. The much needed office help proved their worth by typ- ing letters, schedules, contracts, and taking care of the general needs of the students. Mr. Abney had his hands full to see that the best possible use was made of the buildings and teaching supplies, that the most current teaching aids were available, and that a valid testing pro- gram was set up in grades kindergarten through eight. All these people have done a tremendous job. Our hats are off to all of them. MRS. DEAN MOCKLER, School Secretary; MRS. LIDWINA PEIRNOT, Secretary to District Super- intendent; MRS. BARBARA RICHARDSON, District Bookkeeper; MR. IRA S. ABNEY, Curriculum Co- ordinator. Sponsored by KOHLMAN'S MARKET MR. ALFRED NESS Principal -----— v. 4 : MR. KENNETH POPPY District Superintendent

P.S.S.C., B.S.C.S.; Advance The Physical Science Study Committee, a new approach to physics, was introduced into the cur- riculum this year. In order to keep pace with the ever-expanding science study, Mr. William Cary, physics, chemistry, physical and general science instructor, attended this summer Rutgers Univer- sity, New Brunswick, New Jersey. Contrary to the usual science procedure, from textbook to the laboratory, the P.S.S.C. work is from the laboratory to the textbook. In this way more practical physics is learned, rather than a great deal of technology. The goal of this P.S.S.C. work is for the student to gain a better under- standing of the physical universe through thorough understanding rather than the memorization of facts. Mr. Claire Richardson, biology instructor, also attended summer school this past summer. At the 1962 Summer Institute at the University of Min- nesota, he studied Radiation Biology and also pre- pared for the teaching of the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study. As a result of his summer studies, Mr. Rich- ardson introduced two versions of the B.S.C.S., a Pointing out the different root systems of plants to Sandy Anderson, Pam Whitt, and Brian Bass is Mr. Richardson, one of the biology instructors.
