THEIR WORK CAPTURES MEMORIES Thoughts of the glory of putting out the '56 yearbook blinded the staffs' eyes to the many difficult jobs ahead-- jobs like planning pages, taking pic- tures, writing copy and captions, and selling the yearbook. Their first concern was soliciting •ads. Muttered phrases could be heard s they practiced sales speeches. How good those phrases sounded--un- jtil they stood before their first pro- spective sponsor. Page planning was a larger bite than planned on. They began working ! with that novelty, the pica, for sizes of pictures; and copy captions and Sheadings which were pinned in place to assure themselves of the effect on the reader. Needless to say re- ANNUAL STAFF--Sitting: Mary Ryan, Rita Taylor, Barbara Mueller, Mary Lee Gruber, Mr. Ness. The purpose of the Student Council is to encourage student participation in the matters which arise involving them. Through cooperation from the faculty, the student body, and the Council members, the student government can work toward a happier and a more eventful school year. Some of the Council's accomplishments this year were: to revise the old constitution; monitor the study halls; and charter the clubs. They also set up the program of dances throughout the school year and began building up the record collection by having each organization buy one when they sponsor a dance. Class Colors--Navy and Silver Flower- -Gardenia U V % l tj : i September I, 1952 found ninety-five freshmen wandering through the halls of Prairie High. Elections placed Jim Eckstein in the office of class president, Merlin Markert became vice-president, Don Bram- schreiber took over the duties of treasurer, and Kay Richter was elected secretary. Tyler Olcott and Bonnie Wegner won seats on the Student Council. Miss Andrzejczak was the class' first advisor. Rita Taylor represented the class on the Homecoming court of honor. Initiation Day arrived at PdS and so did the freshman class, bedecked in pajamas and pop's underwear, overshoes, and necklaces of vegetables. They were served a pot-luck dinner that memorable evening of October 24, and then the green frosh were led to the blocks to perform their stunts. Officially members of Prairie High now, the class of '56 began its long list of activities as students. Barbara Mueller and Kappy Fitzgerald represented the school at State Music Tournament when their clarinet duet won a starred first rating at the district contest. Fifteen of their number participated in forensics in the spring. Jack Wagnild's humorous declamation took him to the league contest at Sauk City. A cast of six freshmen put on a farce, Swept Clean Off Her Feet, when three one-act plays were pre- sented in May. The last activity of the year was the return party which they gave for the mighty sophomores. Shirley Jenewein was chosen president for the second year at Prairie High. JoAnn Schoephorster was vice-president. Rita Bindl recorded the events at class meetings, and George Knox guarded the sopho- mores' money. Mike Riechman and Jan Worman were delegated to the Student Council. Mr. Savides was their advisor for the year. In due time the sophomores showed their power by initiating the green freshmen. Jan Worman was their representive on the 1953 Homecoming court. Seven of their class members took part in forensic activities that year. Jan Worman's serious decla- mation received a B at the district competition at Fort Atkinson. Eight sophs acted in Pest Guest, one of the three one-act plays presented in the spring. Their cast won pins for being adjudged best. Kappy Fitzgerald was among the three Prairie students who participated in the State Music Tournament. September 7, 1954, rolled around and eighty-three juniors, the largest class in the school history, assembled to begin another year. Mr. and Mrs. Perry advised the new slate of officers--President Don Bramschrieber; vice-president, Lyle Kuhnau; secretary, Kappy Fitzgerald; and Mike Riechman, treas- urer. Jan Worman, Mike Riechman, Carol Accola, Don Bramschreiber, and Wayne Gower became Stu- dent Council members. Two members of the class were in the cast of the one-act play Goodnight, Please! which, after win- ning A's in the local, league, and regional, competed in the district of the State Drama Contest. Kay Richter was selected by the football team to represent the junior class on the Homecoming court. Kappy and Barbara again competed in State Music Tournament where they entered a clarinet duet, and Kappy entered a clarinet solo. Of the six juniors who participated in the 1955 forensic activity, three went on to the league contest at Waunakee. Roman Holiday, the prom , was reigned over by Queen Kappy Fitzgerald and King Wayne Gower and a court of 10 junior boys and girls. Benny Ehr's orchestra provided music for those who danced in the an- cient Roman atmosphere. Don Bramschreiber was elected to Badger Boys' State and Kappy Fitzgerald spent a week in Madison at Badger Girls' State. For the class of I956's final year in high school the following class officers were chosen: Jack Wagnild, president; Merlin Markert, vice-president; Emily Matoushek, secretary; Don Bramschreiber, treasurer. Mr. Hanrath and Mr. Ness advised them at class meetings. Don Bramschreiber was elected Student Coun- cil President; other senior members were Jan Worman, Jack Wagnild, Wayne Gower, and Carol Accola. Five seniors were chosen by the faculty to take the preliminary screening test for National Merit Scho- larships: Bonnie Wegner, Elaine Graf, Kappy Fitzgerald, Art Fraser, and Don Bramschreiber. Eleven seniors participated in this year's one-act plays and Bethel Pullen was a member of the cast which received an A in the local contest. Frost Fantasy was the last big social affair. The highlight of the Senior Snow Ball was the corona- tion of Queen Jan Worman and King Don Bramschreiber, attended by five senior couples. In forensics, Jack Wagnild represented the class in the local, league, and district contests in the ex- temporaneous reading category. Preparations for the class play began as soon as the play Love Is Eternal had been chosen. Twenty- eight seniors comprised the cast. The play's success more than justified the hard work. Carol Accola received the Daughters of the American Revolution award for our class. They took a cruise on Lake Michigan for their class trip and after Class Night, Baccalaureate, and Commencement they left dear old Prairie High to enter the school of life.
