CLASS HISTORY The 1950 Prairie Schooner started across the grassy plains and mount- ains of knowledge and achievement toward the great sea of life with five tiny passengers. They were Albert Ehret, Charles Henning: Perry Ol- cott, Peter Radlund, and Marian Russell. These five have ad the fort- itude and perseverance to endure the hardships of the passing years be-. gun under the guidance of their first leader, Miss Got am. hey learn- ed to sit in orderly fashion in a semi-circle while listening to the ad- yengures of Alice and JerryfromMiss Sather who also taught 'riting and rit metic. With the coming of the Badger Ordnance the number was increased by many new friends from throughout the country. The schooner moved to the high school building for the lack of space, where it rolled along smoothly amid the genial good humor of Miss Mulchaey. They reached the foothills of the Rockies with Miss Roser. Many of their commanders were lost among Prairie Indian raids during the seige of the Powder Plant. They hit the trail up the junior high mountains with Miss Schmidt, passing their leisure time with a checkers tournament. The first eighth ggade graduation exercises were inaugurated under Mrs. Kuhnau, nee iss Gruber, and the new principal, Mr. Koten. The band of passengers increased to fifty-five as they started re- freshed and invigorated for the home stretch. They started as green freshies and weathered the storm of initiation to become full-fledged students of Prairie High. In their sophomore year they put their noses to the grind-stone and enjoyed fully the pleasures and activities of school. In the junior year their horizon broadened and they took hold of the reins as upper-classmen with Mr. Boll, the present principal. A class play, Here Come the Brides under the guidance of Mr. and Mrs. Ness was successfully presented. Several outstanding athletes represented the class. The Junior Prom was undertaken with the help of their advisors. The gym was transformed into a lovely harbor scene at ni ht. The theme was 'Silver Sails in the Moonli ht . The President and King, Albert Fuchs, chose Joan Doescher as lgiis queen. The dawn of their senior year found the passengers of the schooner eatgerly awaiting the pleasures of the final lap toward their goal. Their ef orts for Homecoming were well rewarded by a victory over Spring Green, followed by a very successful dance. Arvin Steckelberg and Jo Ann Luher reigned as kin and queen. The days following were crowded with activities. Among Siem they had the Senior Class Play, Every- thing Happens to Us under the able supervision of Mr. and Mrs. Ness. After much discussion they decided to have an informal Senior Dance and decorated the gym to the theme of I'm Forever Blowing Bubb1es . Roger Shanks and Cynthia Turkelson reigned as king and queen. From then on it was down the trail toward the harbor of graduation, into the sea of life. The Prairie Schooner had reached its estination. Here is a letter postmarked South Arnerica. I never thought anyone of my classmates would get that far from home. It's from Perry Olcott. He says he is as happy-go-lucky as ever and is getting a good salary. Idle just finished construction of an additional set o locks on the Panama anal. Expenses must be high because Charles sent onlya postcard. It says, Tune in at 9:00 over WIBU daily. Hear the 'Dusty Valley Boys', Charles Henning and Gordon Jesse accompanied by 'Tex' Lipke and his guitar. This letter postmarked New York is from Beverly Bartnich, the fa- mous Powers' model. She has her wish for she is now a cover irl . She also mentions that Doris Wells, who moved to Japan last fall, qias a prominent government position in Tokyo. There ought to be a letter from Billy Kirchstein of Beverly Hills. He is the romantic idol and Romeo of Hollywood. It's a long time since Patty Schroeder has written. She writes that Colleen Barkley and she are very successful on Broadway. They are a well known song and dance team and are really goin places these days. A very di nified letter came from President Miqton Trautmann of the University of 5Visconsin. More circulars--it's about time he realized I wasn't planning on attending school, not at my age. The University basket- ball team is holding number one spot in the Big ll with Joe Ryan as head coach and Bob Parchem as assistant. Q ' , One letter came on which I had to pay some postage. Gloria Conley always would try to get out of anything she could. Allied occupied Germany certainly agrees with her and that WAC uniform is mighty pretty. Guess who was just appointed the new Secretary o Agriculture? It is none other than Albert Fuchs. I wonder if he is anything like he was when he was still in high school? He says he sees Marian Russell occa- sionally. She is a court reporter in the Supreme Court in Washington D. C. Frank Wittwer is just what I expected, the head of General Motors. He has two very able assistants, James Delaney, an outstanding auto- mobile salesman, and Fred Richolson, mechanic. His private secretary is Marian Randall. Here is a letter from Joan Doescher. She is head dress buyer for an exclusive Fifth Avenue sho . Well, well! A telegram frrom Bill Miller! He always did believe in getting through life easy. For a month he has beenmarried to one of New ork's wealthiest socialites. Easy-going Bill , that's what we called him, and see where it got hinfi! , Bernadine Dobratz and Mildred Walch couldn't leave the territory around Prairie. Bernadine is living at home and is now a well known author of children'sg books. Mildred and her husband are owners and operators of aswank motelbverlooking the scenic Wisconsin River, where they have entertained guests from all parts of the world. , Our state's 4-H leader just came back from Washington D. C. She's Dorothy Steuber. A M Sim , -N -. f , r-K, .. 1 .....,-.fi - , ,.. 4... v, ' , w u 14. 4 egg. Clair is stationed somewhere overseas but Vernie is in Texas where heis par- ticularily interested in the Southern belles. Here's a letter containinga cartoon of Billy Jo, famous comic strip drawn by Roger Shanks. former study hall artist. - n This letter is from Weaver, Iowa. Nancy Rothacker writes that it is her first year of teaching in the sixth grade. She wpnders if she acted like that when she was in school. I wonder if she did? Professor George Martin has sent me word that he has established a colle e for Merrimac's less fortunate farmers. Robert Morrow and Bob Ragyor are learning to raise the necessities of life, namely: one cow, one pig and eight chickens. We have another surprise for you. Guess who's the coach of the College of Merrimac basketball squad? 'That's right, the former all star of Prairie High. Bob Savoy. ' They have a new star in the Skating Varieties , Arlene Sprecher. She's now appearing at Madison Square Garden for a two week's engage- ment. You may remember the Boston Bank holdup back in '50, Well, it took a number of years to clear that up and none other than Peter Radlund, our lawyer-detective, solved the case. Wayne Fingerhuth and Donald Koepp are married farmers. Because of the past prosperous years. Wayne's farm now consists of almost all of Black Hawk. I hear Donald has a television set. Too bad he doesn't have a family yet to enjoy it. Looks like more work for C nthia Turkelson and Romelda Richards for they have gone all out for inzerior decorating, in their own homes, of course. Raydean Knuth decided not to leave this neck of the woods. He is milk collector for this area. La Von Peetz and her husband live in a rustic cottage in Baxter's Hollow. Melvin Richolson has had considerable trouble with his cattle lately but Lenard Litscher, our veterinarian, is always on the job. Norma Buchanan is one of the best stenographers the Lodi Lumber Company has ever had. Phyllis Knox is a typist for a LaCrosse Garage. Arvin Steckelberg and Albert Ehret are somewhere in Europe. Albert is an engineer for a dam being built under the Recovery Plan. Arvin has expande his business so he now has three outdoor drive-in-theaters. one of which is in Paris. Verne Kinschi, who recently bought a large area of ex-Bad er Ord- nance land to add to his farm, is -now the largest patron of Oscar ilIayer's. -To Ann Luher has an excellent position as accountant for Farmers' Mutual Insurance Company in Madison. Now I think I will pick these letters up and tie them with a gray and red ribbon because they were our class colors. I'll pack them in the old trunk upstairs. Oh! Here is one under this chair. I would find it afterlhad the others all tied together! It's from Eugene Mowitz. Whenever anyone would ask him what e was gkping to be, he always said, A bum! I giuess he had us all fooled, for e is a very well known artist exhibiting is paintings with the Gimble Art Collection. Well, there the trunk lid goes down to store away the memories ofmy former classmates of 1950. N. H. A. fs: 5.7-I . gap., , 4' ' .- 1 -4 Ve:-4 z ,,,. ww ' :..v, .. mx... '-M' A -Nf- g, ,-.
