The 1983-84 school year hosted a wide range of events for PHS students. Homecoming started the year off with everything from punk rockers to beach bums. Homecoming week meant the annual panic for class officers to organize skits, floats, and window decorations while somehow maintaining their sanity. The most memorable events, of course, were the game and dance. And the year had just begun. Several dances were held throughout the year, including: Junior Fall, Sadie Hawkins, Senior Sweetheart, and Prom. Between dances there were other special events including the faculty vs. the Z-93 Pepsi Hot-shots and the music department's presentation of Once Upon a Matfress . The 1983-84 school year wound up with a not-so-successful Senior Skip Day. Though not many seniors skipped the entire day, as was tradition, many did finish the year with a staggering good time. Foolin' in 83 Homecoming '83 During the week of October 11-16 pandemonium increased with the celebration of Homecoming. Class members organized among themeselves to create award-winning floats, windows and skits. Throughout the week's activities suspense mounted in anticipation of the crowning of the 1983 Homecoming queen at Thursday night's parade and bonfire celebration. Rich DuCharme nervously gave a speech on behalf of the football team while his fellow co-captain, Larry Stumpy Mara, crowned Deb Konichek as queen. Mary Ries, this year's chairman, was crowned the queen behind the scene by principal Jerry Hesselberg on behalf of the student council. Friday night's game went in the Hawks' favor as they easily downed the Bulldogs of Boscobel 27-6. To conclude the week of celebrating, the seniors hosted the Homecoming dance Saturday night at which all enjoyed themselves (see pictures). Opposite Page: Upper left: Sophomores Kim Moore. The cast was made up of 12 seniors, 1 junior, and 2 freshman. Many hours of work and practice were put in by the cast and directors after school, at night, and weekends. The faculty began their school year by moving into new rooms or rearranging the old ones. The PHS staffers were faced with changes in classes and administration but they managed to resume an educational atmosphere for the students. Their responsibilities ranged from playing disciplinarian and enforcing the rules and regulations to instructing us academically as well as socially. The following pages show the students of PHS and these people who devote a part of their lives for our benefit in action in the classrooms of Prairie High. Create The art classes at Prairie High have been a time of growth and self awareness for the students who took the courses. Exciting, creative moments took place in our little kingdom. We had fun and laughter, and we had a few sad moments as well. But, that is what life is all about, isn't it. The students individuality was always the NO. 1 priority. The talent was there and the students knew what to do with it. We had two successful art shows, one at the now-famous Effigy Mounds Park and the other right here at our high school. Both were well attended and enjoyed. Every year is different and exciting. I am looking forward to our next new crop of artists. THIS PAGE, Top: Paul Davies jives and draws to Michael Jackson. It is no longer just cooking and sewing. Eight semester courses and one year long course are offered including Consumer Economics, home Planning Design, Child Development, Family Living, Foods Nutrition, Clothing Textiles. Singles Living, Foods II, and General Home Ec. Activities during the year included visiting solar heated homes, refinishing antique furniture, working with children in a nursery school, listening to children in a nursery school, listening to speakers on a range of topics from sexual decision making to family violence, examining apartments for rent, using the computer to analyze student diets, and attending special youth conferences. A new class was introduced during second semester this yedr, Foods II is designed for students who wish to explore a career in the food service area and includes a simulated restaurant experience. 51 Experiment Approximately 65 sophomores, juniors, and seniors took chem I. Students were involved in some 25 laboratory experiences. In addition to nitty-gritty basics, all chem students had special fun on Mole Day . Christmas and Easter labs will not easily be forgotten either. 25 juniors and seniors took physics. Some of the laws of nature were studied; some believable, some not. The general science course is set up with student activities in mind. A large portion of the class is student participation. For example, during the weather unit the students are required to make their own weather observations and station models. Astronomy is designed around a series of video tapes based on bosic astronomy concepts. Students are required to do library research and a term paper. Filling the time between jobs, sports, and homework are the organizations of PHS. With interests varying from world politics to homemaking, these organiza- tions required devoted and hard-working members. These people worked to express and extend their talents outside of the classroom in organizing and running a club. They displayed their talents as performers, competitors, intellects, debators, leaders, and community servers while making friends and enjoying themselves — the best award any organization can give to its hardworking members. Installation of officers was followed by a pizza and roller skating party. In mid-September, FHA members attended the District FHA H.E.R.O. meeting at Sparta High School. The club goal for this year was drug and alcohol awareness and prevention. As their first project, the FHA helped the local Cancer Society promote the Great American Smokeout. Other activities the club was involved in were: Operation Santa Claus, March of Dimes Youth Conference, and Walk America. The year concluded with a field trip and overnight stay at LaCrosse colleges. Forensics is a speaking contest where in participants worry and fret to such extent that few make it past sub-local competition. Gosh, I remember when ... oops! This is a direct quote ... I guess I should wind it up. So, in conclusion, I'd like to thank the Academy for this highly nerative honor. Thank you. SENIORS 2,160 days of public education ... 1,104 university and college handbooks ... 134 eighteenth birthday celebrations ... 6,786 graduation invitations ... 10,998 senior pictures ... Four years ago a band of students entered the world of PHS. Lost in a maze of hallways and locker combinations they had to adjust to the new school system. During their first semester as Prairie High students, the group was forced to endure the confusion of their first Homecoming and the torture of Senior Seniority Day. Over the next four years the Class of 1984 not only grew taller and wiser but also closer together through the building of their bonfire, the planning of their Junior Prom, and other activities. Their final year was filled with fighting the symptons of Sen-ioritis as well as talk of college, jobs, and life after high school. Seniors say farewell to P.H.S. Heading the list of changes is our new principal, Gerald Hesselberg. Mr. Hesselberg is originally from Bangor Wisconsin. He attended Luther College in Decorah, where he received a bachelor's degree. Later he received his master's degree from St. Mary's College. He attended Winona State University to attain his 6th year certificate. He has been teaching for twenty-four years. Mr. Hesselberg studied all different types of sciences while in college, but he primarily studied biological sciences. Before coming to Prairie du Chein, Mr. Hesselberg was a principal at Rushford High School in Minnosota. He says he likes Prairie High very much. He finds the staff is easy to work with and the students are very friendly. Hesselberg has already made changes at Prairie High this year. He has made some handbook revisions and put together a committee to study the possibilities of adding new classes to the curriculum. For the school year of 1984-1985, classes shall be arranged by computerized scheduling. Mr. Hesselberg felt this would cut down on the amount of class rescheduling in the fall, He has many plans for the future, but states that much of this will be dependent on state legislation as well as local programs. Prairie High may be forced to change to an eight hour schedule. He says there are additional projects under consideration, which includes competency testng of students, a student assistant program, and a top-twenty program. Mr. Hesselberg lives in Prairie du Chien with his wife, Laurie, and their two children. {rn tAtemmu 0 SocUtiMicAae SBe ewe fane 44, 4965 23, 4984 106 Eva Askrud, an exchange student from Sweden, Dikla Oshry is a foreign exchange student from raised the money she needed to come to the Unit- Israel who came to Prairie du Chien after finishing ed States by working in a record factory Having her high school studies Dikla says the main reasons already attended two years of high school, she for her coming to the United States were to learn came to America to learn to speak fluent English so the language better and to experience the social she would be able to get a better job when she and cultural differences of American teenagers returned home Dikla comes from a family of four children. The most memorable of which was watching rock videos which gained nation-wide popularity on MTV. The theater caught on to the new trend with movies like Flashdance and “Footloose . Michael Jackson and Boy George were probably the two most flamboyant celebrities if not the most popular. PHS students were listening to Van Halen, Def Leppard, Quiet Riot, Cyndi Lauper, Prince, Lionel Richie, Duran Duran, ZZ Top, John Cougar Mellencamp. and Huey Lewis and the News. Along with new music trends. Break Dancing made its way into both the theater and television. New trends were set in fashion also. Girls were wearing jeans, skirts, and boots shorter, while shorts, ironically, were longer. Denim and leather jackets were in as well as argyle and girls has ESPRIT printed across their shirts. Boys stayed with their traditional PHS look of camouflage, plaid flannel shirts, and concert T-Shirts. Both boys and girls were wearing their hair shorter on the sides and longer in the back. And everyone had a “Sliverhawks shirt. Pans movies, records, and other happenings. You lasted through the winter and spring is just around the corner. Meanwhile, Sophomores and Juniors strolled casually through the halls. Fundraising kept the Sophomores busy during the 83- 84 school year as they continue to work toward Epcot. The Juniors, with only one more year to survive, had a hectic year; in between the building of their Homecoming bonfire and the planning of the Prom, their free time was spent considering the alternatives of their future. During the 1983-84 school year a large part of the student body of PHS participated in the sports program. Through long, hard hours of practice after school as well as the hours of competition at night, these students worked to develop their skills both as individuals and as team members. For those students who chose to join a team each season, after school practice and games became a way of life. Athletes exhibited their skills on the playing field, the track, the gymnasium, the golf course, the balance beam, and the wrestling mat. Throughout the season our Hawks fearlessly faced opponents, their sportsmanship prevailed at all times. Therefore, we devote the following pages to those students who wear anything from a maroon and white jersey to a leotard. Row 1: S. Boylen, 8. Kazda N. Hare. B. Kelly Row 2: J. Kluesner, M Heisz. S. Another year has passed ... PHS people move on to other aspects of living while recuperating from the experiences of fhe last nine months. During this time, these special people have been involved in clubs, classes, and sports. Together they learned lessons in leadership, sportsmanship, and friendship. They have discovered hidden talents, challenged teachers, and expressed opinions. As the summer of 1984 approaches, these experiences will become memories that will follow these unique people wherever they go. For some, this marks the finale of high school; for ofhers, they will return. But, for all, fhrough fhe changes, tests, and homework of fhe past year, the people of PHS have grown a little taller, a little older, and perhaps even a little wiser. Lookout world because they UP 8r COMING. 152
