L Herat ure-37 Out Standing in Their Fields We went to the Ag Department and asked the teacher and a few of the students what their thoughts were concerning Agriculture. Mr. Ralph (instructor) said; The Vocational Agriculture Department offers a wide variety of ’hands on’ meaningful student involvement. They have a well equipped classroom, meat cutting lab. welding, spray painting and mechanics department. They also operate a 26 acre school forest, a school garden, a nursery, an orchard and are making plans for a greenhouse. The students enjoy it because they get to 'learn by doing' in many different ways. Past students say it became one of their important high school study experiences and if they were able to go to school again, they surely would be enrolled in Vocational Agriculture The students had this to say: Ag is fun because you are not buring your head in a book. You're getting 'on the job experience. . . all the tools you would ever need Ag is a class which has a wide variety of subjects from farming to landscaping. It is a chance to better yourself in more than one field. (field! Get it?) Instead of sitting in the room studying out of books, we go out and get practice doing it. I Believe that the Ag Department is a very good thing for students in high school. It teaches you many things about agriculture, things that everybody should know before they go out into society. It is a more challenging course than any other subject you could take while in high school. Upper Left- Mr. Ralph I have this fuzzy thing under my arm! He is under the authority and supervision of the school principal and has a responsibility both to him and to the faculty, to aid in the process of formal education. It does place him in a position to approach pupils on an informal basis. From this vantage point it is the counselor s job to help the student select and carry through a school program that will lead to the best opportunity for a successful post-high school experience. The Counselor is a repository of facts (or where to find them) about occupations, educational opportunities, community resources. etc. G U I stands for Guidance stands for You who need the guidance stands for Me as I am the Guidance Counselor D stands for a four letter word that I sometimes utter r stands for All the good students we have Nl stands for those Nuts who never hear the announcements C stands for Constant checking of credits E stands for Everyone who has some good in him. Did you see a pointing finger And really wonder who Could be the poor victim. And find out that it is you? Have you ever been the object Of some pitiful, silly pun Yet to you its not so funny It's really kind of dumb? But when you point the finger And when you laugh and hound You forget how it feels To be so much put down. The young athletes began to look forward to the goal of a successful, undefeated season, each man knowing it would involve a lot of hard work, a lot of pain, much frustration and most of all determination. It was a good turnout of players for the ’77 season and it seemed Coaches Bebow and Campbell would have much talent to work with. Many were worried about the line knowing they had lost most of it at last year’s graduation, but the players filled in and did the job. The season seemed to be over as soon as it began, each game filled with excitement. The goal had been reached but evidently not good enough for the WIAA. Their record of 8-8 shows how strong their team effort was. The Hawk spikers were led by senior Julie Halverson, who was named first team All Conference, junior Tammy Sheckler. second team All Conference and junior Penny Yeomans, who was given Honorable Mention (Left). Many hours of hard work, determination and a lot of practice was put in by the girls this year. They won some hard fought victories and lost some disappointing defeats, but their spirit never gave up. Probably the most upsetting loss was in the sub-regionals when Lancaster beat the Prairie girls in the third and deciding game. The J.V.’s also had a good season as they recorded a 8-6 record for the season. Congratulations Teams! J.V. Team Row It S. Zable. T. Rodenkirck. D. Hutson. R. Kahler. J. LaBonne. R. Sutton. Row 2: L. Season Highlights Boys’ Cross Country at Prairie High was on the upswing in 1977. The team completed the most successful season in the school’s history. Led by team captain Gary Stram and surprise freshman sensation Kevin Kieser, the team placed second in the Prairie Invitational, third in the Western Dubuque Invitational, and second in the LaCrosse Logan Invitational. In the Logan Invitational Kieser and Stram finished first and second in the twelve team field to lead all runners. In the SWAL Conference meet Prairie scored an early victory over Riverdale, lost to Fennimore, and then surprised the conference by pulling an unexpected upset over River Valley, then rated number 2 in the state. John Worrell and Shane Long were the key factors in that meet as Prairie’s number 3 and 4 runners both bettered their times by 20 seconds on the home course. Injuries, sickness, and cold weather took their toll as the Blackhawks lost to Richland Center, and salvaged a fourth place in the tough SWAL Conference meet, which was held at Prairie du Chien. The team recovered, though, and ran a tremendous effort and a great accomplishment for the team. Letter winners this year included: Captain Gary Stram, Most Valuable Runner- Kevin Kieser. John Worrell, Shane Long, Mike Gokey, Steve Loetz, Mike Adamski, and Jim Wood. 96-Boys’ Cross Country Row I: S. Smith. M. Fulcher. J. Bebow. M. Sunde. D. Rickleff. T. Igou. Row 2-. Coach Nielsen. B. A difference between one to four shots determined the outcome o many matches as the golfers ended with a 4-6 season record. There wa a never ending challenge throughout the season and the Blackhawk stayed in the running, taking fourth place in the conference. Season Highlights What unofficially began last summer with summer league, officially started on Nov. 6 with what looked like the most unexperienced team in the past four years. But after the first five games the Blackhawks showed they were a team to be reckoned with. In the third game of the season the Hawks avenged a loss at Richland Center a year ago by smashing the Hornets 76-67, then went on to beat the Minnesota Class A champs by twenty points. While overcoming many obstacles the Blackhawks matured under Coach McGrath into a very talented group. Finishing the season with a 160 record, the team went into tournament play with momentum. Instead of making their fourth trip to the State Tournament the Blackhawks lost a heartbreaking game to Wisconsin Dells in overtime. Even though the Blackhawks weren’t lucky enough to make a return trip to Madison, they were considered by many as one of the better teams in the state. Boys' Basketball-99 J.V. And Frosh Have J.V. The key game that wrapped up the championship was a 51-23 win over Boscobel. The Hawks overcame a slight height disadvantage when they traveled to Platteville to defeat the Hilltoppers 40-47, thanks to the two winning free throws by Tammie Sheckler. In the record match with Plat teville. the Prairie girls had no problem beating them 62-54. This and the 44-38 victory over Seneca were the toughest non-conference games for the Hawks. The whole team, which consisted of eleven letter winners had an II I conference record and a 17-2 overall record. The Hawks only conference loss came at the hands of Viroqua who upset them by one point. 37-38. This year the gymnasts beat a powerful DeSoto squad for the first time ever. It was also this meet that they set a new varsity school record of 85.75 points. Their score of 84.06 was also a new SWAL Conference record. This year was also the first time the Prairie High Gymnastics team has sent anyone on to the State Meet. Carol Pedretti made it in the balance beam and the all around, being the only sophomore in the event. Tina Sawvell competed on the balance beam and Debbie Cejka on the uneven bars.
