Then in 1923, this dgince evolved into the Junior Prom and the seniors sponsored a carnival instead. Around the year 1945, the seniors resumed their prom in the form of a Mid-Winter Formal. A court and king were chosen by the class with the king choosing and crowning his own queen. During the 1960’s Mid-Winter Formal was changed back to Senior Prom, with the court, king and queen being voted for by the class. In 1971 because of conflicts between Junior and Senior Prom, the seniors then changed their Prom to Senior Dance. The dance remained semi-formal, but no court was chosen. By 1974 Senior Dance became very casual. Our Senior Dance was held March 4. So many things happened and we like getting involved. From the first day of school we have been filled with the excitement of being a part of Prairie High. The first few weeks of school were hectic ones, trying to find classes and getting to them on time. However, as time went by, we became accustomed to the new school and discovered that it was time to get involved in many activities of a high school student’s life. FRESHMEN SELECT GALE WALTERS TO LEAD CLASS OF 80 When we elected our freshmen class officers everything worked in our favor. We chose Gale Walters for president. Now that we have completed our second year at Prairie High, we are looking forward to being a part of the upperclassmen. This past year has been a fantastic one, but we believe we can make each year better than the one before. 79er’s ELECT OFFICERS Sophomores elected three capable students to lead their class. OFFICERS SERVE WELL As future electors, we used our voting rights at P.H.S. when electing our junior class officers. We looked for responsible people, students who could ably represent our class during our junior year. The students we elected proved to be what we had hoped for and we are proud to have them represent the juniors. We would like to thank Mark Bowar (Pres.), Lori Roach (V. Pres.), and Mary Mulrooney (Sec. Treas.) for having done a good job as our junior class officers. 66-Underclaesmen THIS YEAR HAS BEEN FUN: NEXT YEAR WILL BE EVEN BETTER! Our junior year is over and now it is time to go on to bigger and better things. However, we can remember all the happy times we had going to dances and parties, listening to a favorite song with a special person, and freezing at a football game. This past year has been full of hard work mixed with fun; next year will be even better. JUNIOR HOMEROOM 2 ROW 1: 8. Elvert, J. Oates, B. Govier. J. Giliitzer, T. Gratz. ROW 2: J. Hand, T. Halverson. Throughout the years, there have been many outstanding teachers at Prairie High. There is one man, however, who was most extraordinary as a teacher, a man. and most simply a friend. Although not everyone agreed with him on all things at all times, he stood up for what he thought was best, yet he always kept an open mind. Although his death was a shock and tragedy to those of us who knew and loved him, let us dwell not on his death, but rather on his life—how he lived—how he DID live. Do you remember hearing of Uncle Cowie, Mister Ed or Captain Crunch? Were you ever thumbed on the head, kicked in the feet, or called on intentionally when you weren’t paying attention? Did you ever laugh to the nicknames of “high-pockets”, “ding bat”, and “dumb bell”? All of this was added to various extracurricular activities such as an occasional party consisting of juice, rolls and old World War II stories. This learning environment was second to none. John Cowie was the person who knew the right formula for a perfect chemistry class. One will never know what compulsory force kept this extraordinary science teacher coming back to P.H.S. for eleven years. We only hope that he received as much out of teaching as he gave to his many students. To those who were fortunate enough to have Mr. Cowie as a teacher, he will always remain a cherished memory. To those who never got to know him, he will remain an unexperienced opportunity. GAA on UPPER LEFT- “78 ROW 1: D. Cejka, J. Dobner. C. DesRocher, S. Schauf, G. Steiner, S. Mergen, F. Johnson, P. Some of these activities are: Help organize Homecoming activities which includes writing and performing skits before the student body, elect two seniors, a boy and girl, each month as Students of the Month, organize the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance, and sponsor several concession stands throughout the year. This year the Student Council was called upon to develop the John Cowie-Peter McCarville Scholarship Fund. They set up the criteria for granting the award to the deserving senior. They organized a fund raising project where disc-jockeys from WKTY-WSPL La Crosse played the faculty. All proceeds went into the fund. Student Council (OPPOSITE LEFT TOP) ROW 1: J. LaBonne. N.
