The academic part of the program is functional and geared to skills necessary for working and living in today's society. The work-study program provides assistance to students in preparing for and selecting a career. The Driver's Education course, instructed by Mr. Howard, instructs the student in the DO'S AND DONT'S of operating a motorized vehicle. The second semester of this course is a health class which is also taught by Mr. Howard. 74 Journalistic Arts The Journalism program, taught by Mrs. George consists of three courses , Journalism 11, Journalism 12 and Graphic Arts. Journalism 11 students study the basics of paper and yearbook production. Our school newspaper is produced by the Journalism 12 class. Graphic Arts is a one semester course in which seniors create their yearbook. This year's editors are Jan Bowar and Vicki Schmitt. This year's PRAIRIE DOG TALES editor is Julie Day with Garith Steiner as her copy editor. Editors for our HAWK TALK column in the COURIER PRESS change each quarter. This year's editors are Donna Waller, Denise Svacina, Madonna Stoehr and Garith Steiner. Syntax English 9 is taught by Mr. Nielson and Mrs. George. It is a grammar oriented course, with objectives being to improve the student's reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. This course also aims to foster the enjoyment of literature and to aquaint the students with the use of the library. 76 Prose English 10 is taught by Mrs. Yeomans. The emphasis in this course is on the short story, the novel, and creative writing. The students write their own short stories and try their hand at acting and the last strong emphasis is on grammar. This course also aims to help the student in acquiring a masterful use of literary terms pertaining to the types of literature itself and to encourage the student to develop a desire to read for enjoyment and for personal development. 77 Communicative Arts English 11, taught by Miss Stemper, strives to stimulate a creative response to literature and life through a study of literature and the communicative arts. This course also stresses mastering of the mechanics in all phases of writing, appreciation of American Literature and its development and encourages wide free reading of American Literature. In this class much emphasis is put on the informal and formal group discussion techniques of attitudes. 78 Expression The Senior English program, taught by Mr. Walz, is entirely elective this school year for the first time. The students are offered a variety of courses according to their own interest and their plans for the future. The creative writing course is based primarily on the objective to allow the students to have a chance to exercise and to develop the powers of expression. English Literature introduces the students to a different form of writing and expression. Humanities makes the student aware of man and his surrounding influences. Business English pursues the basics of English for the students to prepare themselves for real life situations. Speech offers the students experience in the communitive arts. Drama gives the students a chance to experience their ability of portraying different emotions. 79 Foreign Languages The Language Department of our high school contains two subjects, Latin and Spanish. Latin 1 and 2, instructed by Mr. Frommelt, is a series of grammatical and syntax units brought together with the history of another civilization, another culture and as a result of the combination, an understanding of not only the classical cultures and heritage, but our own as well. Spanish 1 and 2, taught by Mrs. Kirchhoff, is open to all students who have a desire to learn about the culture and heritage of Spanish-speaking countries as well as the language itself. Mathematics Instructions in the Mathematics Department are given by three teachers. Mr. Kasey teaches General Math, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra II. Geometry and Algebra I are taught by Mr. Gilbertson. Miss Dohse teaches first semester Trigonometry and second semester Calculus. 81 Social Science World History is taught at the Freshmen level by Mr. Quamme and Mr. Riebe. Mr. Tippery teaches U.S. History I, which is a required course scheduled for the Sophomore year. This course is a large group lecture centered with correlated quiz sessions for research and small group discussions. United States History I covers our nation's history chronologically from the old world background through the war between the states. 82 Government United States History II is taught by Mr. McCarville. This course in American History is required for all Juniors. The large lecture and quiz section is utilized. The small groups in quiz sections do a great deal of research and a variety of topics that enhance the regular course of study. Historical time period covered is the post Civil War period to present day. Mr. Riebe teaches the first semester Economics course and the second semester American Problems course, both which are Senior electives. A new Senior History elective is U.S. History III taught by Mr. McCarville. 83 Sciences General Science, taught by Mr. Lane, compiles the different aspects of earth science. The topics cover the water and rock cycles, earth history, and astronomy. One of the highlights is the controversy of the theories of evolutions and creation. Mr. Rheineck teaches Biology I and II. Biolgoy I is an introductory course to the science of life and the interrelationship of organisms. Chemistry is the study of chemical reaction principles. Physics is the study of physical laws and principles in the universe and the application thereof, both of which are taught by Mr. Cowie. Industrial Arts Industrial Arts 9 and 10 are taught by Mr. Hamann, who also teaches Architectural Drawing. Mr. Garside teaches Metals and Electricity and Woods-Plastics. 85 Home Economics Home Economics, instructed by Mrs. Grelle, offers a basic comprehensive course, which is followed by semester courses in Food and Nutrition, Clothing and Textiles, Child Development and Home Nursing, Housing and Interior Design. Family Living and Consumer Education units are also taught. 87 88 I want the students to get to know their own environment better, to observe nature, and to always keep a watchful eye for designs. If they develop an insight into nature and themselves the art will flow naturally, states Mr. Porvaznik. the art teacher. Art: A Natural Typing Typing, taught by Miss Gabrielson, consists of two courses. Personal typing is a % year course, teaching keyboard and basic theme and letter writing skills. Commercial typing is a full year course that develops and adds to skills of the % year course. Office practice, taught by Mrs. Johnson, allows the student to practice secretarial techniques. 90 rrm Accounting Recordkeeping I, taught by Miss Gabrielson, and II. taught by Mrs. Johnson are courses in business skills such as check writing, handling off money, and'income tax. Bookkeeping and shorthand are also taught by Mrs. Johnson. 91 Sportsmanship The boys' physical education program is an integral part of education, states Mr. Bebow, the Phy. Ed. instructor. The objectives of this course are: 1. Physical fitness 2. Physical skills 3. Social competence 4. Knowledge of understanding Team Strength Senior girls have an elective Phy. Ed. program for the first time this year. Various activities offered in girls Phy. Ed. include volleyball, basketball, modern dance and yoga. The team consisted of Chuck Pleasant, director of the Drug Abuse Program, and seniors Eugene Shedivy and Marianne Antoine. The local team made the maximum tour appearances on the program, going up against the Monroe County Little League from Albia, IA., Maquoketa Valley Teachers' Association, UNI Civics Art Center, and Waukon Jaycees.
