VICTORY ’69 That Special Moment Homecoming '69 will long be remembered for its tremendous impact and success. Under the direction of Michele Miller, chairman, the week began with pep rallies and skits. All was climaxed by a spirited Homecoming game Friday night. Thursday night anticipation and momentum rose as the spectators followed the parade to the ball park where King Rick Kozelka crowned Queen Vicki Moore from a court of senior girls: Debbie Bittner, Carla Fishier, Donna Kapinus, and Sue Welsch. King Rick and Queen Vicki then lighted the annual bonfire that helped to fire up our Blackhawks for the following night. Homecoming night saw the Prairie High Blackhawks, in a game filled with spirit and determination, romp over the Riverdale Chieftains, 57--6. After the game students enjoyed the Victory ’69 dance with music by the Electric Rock . The pep rallies, the parade, the game, and the dance, all helped to make Homecoming '69 a very special event to remember. 8 9 Varsity Squad Cheerleaders, BOTTOM ROW: D. Knapp, N. Johnson, E. Cooper. The Prairie du Chien Blackhawks worked hard and gave their all and all. The season was disappointing because of losing games by one point or being stopped on the one yard line. The Hawks met with victory three times; their record was 3--5 for the season. They showed the fans good football and it was an exciting season. It consisted of Men who had DESIRE, and GUTS; they weren’t afraid to sweat. This was a team and they came to play. But Coach, I can't play Football! One Foot for a Touchdown At the end of the football season the players voted in giving the Darrell Beneker Award to Rick Kozelka. The requirements of the person receiving this award is to be an outstanding student, good citizen and a dedicated athlete. All conference went to a well deserved player, John Howe, who devoted himself to the game and received all conference two years in a row. This year John was placed on all conference offensive and defensive team. Bill Stuart and Rick Kozelka received Honorable Mention. Most Valuable Player was awarded to Senior John Howe. His teammates selected him the end of football season. Mark McWilliams and Jim Kramer represented their team as the Co-Captains for the season. Both the players are seniors. Mark was Prairie's strong running fullback and defensive cornerback. Jim Kramer played left tackle on offense and defense. Award Winners: STANDING: Mark McWilliams, Jim Kramer, SEATED: John Howe, Bill Stuart, Rick Kozelka. Hold that pose ! A lack of height was the most noticeable weakspot but this was offset by some fine shooting. The team consisted of six juniors, three sophomores and one freshman. Because the team was so young, they had to gain much needed experience in a short time instead of gaining it over a few years. With experience, the team will function as a unit and will certainly be a team to watch next year. Hey Jeff, do you want a tip? Don't just stand there! It's all in the wrist! 1-2-3 Red Light! Under the coaching of Cecil Smith and Captain Brian Harris, they made a spectacular show even through their defeats. Though they lacked in experience, they made up for it with their drive and initiative. The 1969-1970 Cross Country Team consisted of four sophomores and two freshmen. With these returning harriers, Prairie High School may look forward to a great future team. On September 4, we started a four year struggle as High School students and as the months passed we busied ourselves making our freshman year a success. Enthusiastically, we all worked to make our Homecoming celebration one of the best ever. Much to our dismay we received third place for our float but we all have high hopes for the years to come. In order to help promote the Christmas spirit all classes were assigned a hall to decorate. In this competition we received first place. All in all we were very satisfied with our freshman year and are anticipating our next three years at P. H. S. STARTING NEW PATHWAYS Freshmen: ROW 1: J. Jones, R. Campbell, G. Benish, M. Every class finds at the beginning of each year that their finances are a little low, and we were no exception, so to build up our fund we held various dances and sales. As the year drew to a close we could look back at the first half of our high school career with satisfaction or remorse, but we could still look ahead with great anticipation and spirit for the challenge of our last two years at P. Amid the confusion of the addition to our school, the juniors began adjusting to the new conditions so that they could be prepared for Homecoming. And they were! For the second consecutive year, they took first place for their window, which held a cemetery scene with the caption We're Plotting A Victory. The Juniors winning float was made up of a stork, and of course, the caption was We're Expecting A Victory . They helped build spirit for the game by building and lighting the victory bonfire. Their money making projects consisted of sponsoring dances, cupcake sales, Blackhawk button sales, and a toothbrush sale. AND THE JUNIORS ROLL ON... Juniors: ROW 1: T. Duve, J. Gibson, S. Downing, M. SENIORS Senior Class Officers: John Ahrens, President; John Howe, Vice-President; Ona Queram, Secretary-Treasurer; Mr. John Cowie, Advisor. Class of 1970 MOTTO: Searching for the One Thing That's Hardest To Find, Myself FLOWER: Mums SONG: “Til Never Pass This Way Again COLORS: Green and Blue In 1966 we took our first big step to our freshman year. Our first task as freshmen was to elect class officers. J. Ahrens was chosen as pres. ;'J. Howe, vice-pres.; and J. Kramer, sec.-treas. We contributed to the success of Homecoming with our attractive window and float, We’ll Launch a Victory . To raise money we undertook a project of selling stationery. Another big move for us came in our sophomore year when we again became underclassmen at the Senior High. Being the youngest class wasn't easy, but our class officers led us through a successful year. Our president was J. Howe; vice-pres., J. Ahrens; and sec. -treas., V. Slaght. Homecoming was special to us because we took first with our float entitled Drag-on to Victory . Being upperclassmen, our junior year was a thrill in itself. Our class increased in size because of the transfers from St. Mary's Academy. We were happy to welcome them. Leading us through our third year werej. Ahrens, pres.; M. McWilliams, vice-pres.; and V. Slaght, sec. -treas. Our junior prom was a change from the usual with the use of animated characters. You're in Love, Charlie Brown was the setting of a very successful prom. King T. Roach crowned Queen J. Gams worthy. Their court was M. Asche, D. Bittner, N. Johnson, V. Slaght, K. White, M. Miller, and S. Otteson. As seniors we eagerly took over the job of being the eldest class. Our class officers were J. Ahrens, pres.;J. Howe, vice-pres.; and O. Queram, sec.-treas. We had a very successful Homecoming. Our theme this year was Victory 69 with V. Moore and R. Kozelka reigning as Queen and King. Their court was D. Bittner, D. Kapinus, C. Fishier, and S. Welsh. Our last project was commencement at which we said our last goodbyes to Prairie High. 60 ■V mjr. VM i.’J-K w Jt ■« n r sv.1 |v. . •. V y : ••i'-n • --'•' J c •.. V . «♦ .. • k A .
