The board has exercised its particu- lar duties with an enthusiasm and interest which has been most notable. Mr. Kennedy, as prin- cipal, has truly merited the respect and admi- rution of all students hccuuse of his kindly yet efficient manner. Closest to the students them- selves is the student council. Elected by the student body, the members, under the super- vision of the principal actually transact busi- ness udecting student interest with a real sense of responsibility und leadership. ONE of Miss Macauley's principal in- terests was the appreciation of art, having studied at several leading art schools. It was appropriate, then, that a painting should be chosen as a me- morial to her. The faculty and the stu- dent council, cooperating on the project, selected the painting 'The Vigil by John Pettie as most fitting. At a special program during the Art Exhibit in April it was formally dedicated. Today it hangs in the study hall as a constant reminder of the noble ideals which Miss Macauley fostered. eachefz, ounse ofz, 'Lien C27 C31 STUDENTS ome students go to .school to get what they can out of lt Others seem to attend to get out of uhat they can In I ratrle High there are not many extremists ln elther category, but the average student of Pralrze Hugh IS tndustrtous, partl czpates ln extra currzcular actzutzes and IS quzte proud 0 hls school It ls these quallttes ln our stu dent body that prompt other schools ln the mem tty to speak well o our sportsmanship and respect our teams On the cmder track, from the speaker s rostrum and rom the mu slc platform students haue garnered honors or our school Rx CLASS OF 38 f,,0ff' Robert Ballantine slow and sure Elvm Braem sen Slble and shrewd Mal colm Brunner persp1cac1ous and preclse 'vlarle Bunders am1cable and appreclable Evelyn Chamberlain una s sum 1 n g and unobstruslve Doro thy Chunat steadfast an d stolcalc 54 W '4 7 1, . :W H ' Frederick Clanton loyal and hkeable Raymond Coo Keith Dally lmpresslve and 1mpuls1ve Vernon Davies dlscernlng and determmed Glenn Eber stalwart and strong Dorothy Eggleston ver sat11e and v1vac1ous Ellzabeth Favre sens1b1e and sedate Norma Gentes graclous and gay Elmer Glllltzer unassumlng and unruffled Arthur Gokey reserved and rehant Elalne Gokey quamt and qu1escent Edward Graap en1gmat1c and athletxc 14 9 f 7- - V,-I ! ... , ' y . . 1 . , . ., . k I I , per, reticent and regular . . . Their neighbors, the eighth grade, Z' number forty-four. The students of both gradcs arc peppy and enthusiastic and are alwavs ready to do their best in all things concerning their school. They have made their presence felt in many ways because of their eager participation iii almost every high school activity. Selling tickets for the high school, making artistic posters to advertise all school activities and adding their bit to pep rallies was only part of their work. Une of the first things done in preparation for the new year was the election of officers which resulted as follows in the eighth grade: Philip Kieser, President: Earl Robertson, Vice- Presidentg and Charlene Steinberg. Secretary-'llreasurer. Seventh grade oilicers were: Van Richmond, Gloria Robertson, and Virginia Cooper. Fifty per cent of the members of the eighth grade and thirty-six per cent of the seventh graders have consistently made the honor roll, proving that scholastically the junior high can cope with the high school. HI LIGHTS .5 UNDPZR the supervision of tl1eir instructors, Miss Nona Deary, eighth grade, and Miss Lila Murton, seventh grade, the junior high students have participated in many activities. Un- doubtedly the most outstanding of them all is one through which two lives were saved and several serious accidents prevented-the safety patrol. This organization consists of eighth grade boys who, anlong other duties, patrol the school grounds, act as ushers at all school activities, frequently assist the local police, and help to promote community safety. Each year the members are sworn in by the chief of police and presented with official badges and belts. For the past four years the patrol has been sponsored by the Kiwanis club. Anything needed by the patrol is supplied by the club and the boys meet with the club once every year. Each year the patrol prepares some project for their sponsors. This year they prepared a safety exhibit. This year the patrol had an enrollment of twenty-three. Besides this, twenty-one girls acted as an auxiliary to the group. The officers were: ,lack Howe and Roland Welscll, lieu- tenantsg Earl Robertson, captaing and Miss Dcary, advisor. llembers of the junior high took an active interest in athletics. The boys had a basket- ball team of which they were mighty proud. ln the only inter-scholastic games played this year with St. Gabriel's and St. ,l0llll,S the junior high won from St. ,lohn's and lost to St. Gabriel's. Those making the team were: Donald Helleron, ,lack Howe, Philip Kieser, Her- bert Neisius, Earl Robertson, and Roland WClSl'll from the eighth grade and Forrest Berndt, Richard Bunders, Lyle Eber, John Kozelou and George Mardaus representing the seventh grade. Besides their school work these students had time for social life. Une of the social high- lights in their year was the annual Christmas party when gifts.were exchanged. The second red letter day was Valentine's Day, when another party was held. Seven girls from the eighth grade were members MISS MURTON MISS DEARY of the girl scouts. They were still classed as tender- foots, but were always eager to do their part in pro- moting this organization. The girls were: 'l'wila Ahrens, Maureen Alderman, Cleo Chamberlain, Pearl Forde, Rosemary Johnson. ,lean Ylarvin, and Charlene Stein- bcrg. 'llllI'0llQ.Zll0lll the year attractive posters to advertise all high school activities were made by the junior high. G R O A N S F R 0 M Prairie 7-Mineral Point 0 PRAIRIE HIGII launched its 1937 grid campaign with an upset victory over Mineral Point. The Maroons worked fast and soon Ebel' snared a pass and stepped into the end zone. Graap ended the day's scoring by booting the ball between the uprights for the extra point. Prairie used a passing attack to good advantage with Graap firing the ball consistently to Eber and Nielsen, who did good work on the receiving end. Cooper led the work of the forward wall with his outstanding, vicious tackling. Prairie 12-Fennimore 0 The Maroons chalked up their second victory as they trimmed Fennimore 12 to 0. Graap became the hero of the game as he took the ball on the opening kickoff, and, behind good iu- terference, raced eighty-five yards to a touclldown. Later '4Babe,' again went over. The Prai- rie line was like a stone wall and repulsed the Fennimore players at every turn. Prairie 12-Platteville 13 The GiRlN'6FlllCllii encountered their first defeat at the hands of a favored Platteville eleven, who barely nosed out the Maroons by one point. The Maroous scored early with a touch- down pass from Craap to Eber, but Coach Hillis men soon countered and made good the try for extra point. Prairie came back fighting and Graap put new life into the game by a spectacular eighty yard scamper to a touchdown. However, the ever important attempt at conversion failed. Platteville then passed its way to another touchdown to put the game Mon icen as Prairie's offense completely failed to click in the scoreless second half. 54 THE GRIDIRON Pratrze 0 Lancaster 6 K very towh Lancaster team handed the M lroons lllCll.' second setback The Pralrle eleven was stored upon lll the first quarter durmi which Lancaster penetrated the formers hne repe ntedly and plunged over from the one yard marker After thls the forward wall of Pralrre stiffened and the vlctors were un lble to push across another score Wachter, Pralrle center, d1d 0lllSt2lI1IllIlg defenslve work 1n backing up the Maroon llne and nailing the Lancas ter backs as they came through The Pralrle backs falled to hlt their strlde, wlth the excep tlon of Rav Benlsh, who galned most of the yardage Prazrze 52 Dodgewlle 6 From the standpolnt of scores, the 1937 homecomlng game ln Pralrle du Chlen was the most successful of any so far The Rlvermen swamped Dodgevllle as they pushed across elght touchdowns and four extra polnts After the score had been tled at SIX all, the game was all Pralrle Four touchdowns were accounted for by Graap, two by Ray Benlsh and dIIlC Pralrle 12 Boscobel 0 Coach SIIl1tllS team ended tl1e season with a convlnclng 12 to 0 vlctory over Boscobel After passes to Nlelsen 'und Rav Benlsh put the ball on the twenty Graap carrled lt over for the first touchdown Davles later crashed ncross the goal hne tallylng the Rlvermens second score Pralrle had a very declded edge ln first downs and ln yards galned from scrlmmage Prazrze takes to The mr Coach Smzth Graap throws a pass Ntelsen Pass R Bemsh to Graap On the bench Graap around right end .l..
