We want to thank you for the many sacrifices you have made to enrich our school days with pleasure and happiness. These things could not have been possible without your help and guidance. Dear Coach: We wish to give you a special note of appreciation, Mr. Van Peursem, for your faithfulness and willingness to be our class sponsor for five con- secutive years. We are sure we shall never for- get the many good times we have had together both in and out of school and the help you have given us. Your Kids A M d awww www C r ' 4 Q fgtvvla -LM ff? You feel no doubt that greatness is achieved by only the few. However, it all depends on how you define the term. In my opinion a great man or wo- man is one who measures up to three standards: first, he is fundamental- ly generous, second, he enriches the lives of those with whom he comes in contact: and third, he does his work in a spirit of complete dedication. According to these standards you and I know dozens of great men and women--your mother, your dad, your pastor, and the man next door. True, their names do not appear in Who's Who, yet they are great--the salt of the earth. Success to you, my young friends . May you achieve this greatness is the wi sh of your superintendent. sift how to earn a million dollars but who never has enough cash to pay his note at the bank. SHORTY--Wlll1e's side-kick and fellow ballplayer ........... IIM SNYDER IIM MEZYERSON--Ioyce's beau. Good-looking and likeable, about 22 .... BILL WADDLF! GRAM--She is about sixty-five, wiry and full of life and ideas. She is countrylsh and minces no words, but of course has a heart of gold ...... BARBARA MILLER ' THE STORY OF THE PLAY When Grandma Simms comes from the farm to visit her daughter, she finds a situ- ation which is not to her liking. It seems that her daughter, Mrs. Abbott, has become a social climber since the death of her hus- band, and the three Abbott children and Sadie, the maid, are having a miserable time. The very day Gram arrives, Mrs. Abbott is bringing three upper-crust guests home for the week end. One of them is rich and snobbish Edwin Carlson, who, Mrs. Abbott insists, her daughter Joyce must marry, although she loves Jim Meyerson, a local telegraph operator. Another of her guests is Miss Quelch, an unlikeable spinster, who runs an exclusive girls' school, to which Mrs. Abbott intends to send Marion, her fifteen-year-old daughter. Willie, the thirteen-year-old son, is also suffering, because his mother won't allow him to do anything he wants, and insists that he prac- tice on his violin so that she can impress people with her culture. PATCH--He looks pretty much like a con- ventional crook, has a patch over one eye, talks out of the side of his mouth in a typi- cal tough-guy accent. He is about 35. . . . HOWARD VAN DERHART MABEL--His wife, a little younger than he, as tough as he is and not afrald of hlm. . . . ELAINE RINEHART BUBBLES--Their gum-chewing daughter, about 14. Hardly respectful of her par- ents .......... ALICE VAN RYSWYK MRS. CARLSON--An effusive society matron who views all through her lorgnette with much hauteur. Her dignity is easily offended and she has much chance to show it. . . SHERYL KOIIER MISS QUELCH--A skinny spinster, also very dignified and haughty ..... IO THOMPSON EDWIN CARLSON--Mrs. Carlson's affected son, about 25 ......... ION RITTER COUSIN OSCAR--A meek little middle -aged man who is soft-spoken and dignified, but easily upset ........... BERYL BOS Well, Gram is determined to put a stop to all this, and she comes up with the bril- liant scheme of inviting the family blacksheep to Mrs. Abbott's week end party. She thinks this ought to sufficiently disgrace her social- climbing daughter and set things straight. This scheme doesn't come off quite as planned because since she has never seen cousin Oscar, the family blacksheep, Gram mistakes a criminal for her long-lost rela- tive and he, needing a hideout, accepts her in- vitation and even brings his wife and daughter. Naturally, the week end party is hardly what Mrs. Abbott had hoped for, but neither is it exactly what Gram wanted, for the criminal relatives find it necessary to get rough, causing plenty of exciting com- plications. But when Gram gets ahold of her trusty shotgun, she emerges the heroine of the situation, the police nab long-sought gangsters, Mrs. Abbott begins to see the light, allowing her children to follow their true inclinations, Iim and Gram get hand- some rewards, and so does the audience in the form of laughs and excitement. Leading scorer for the season was Janet Wilson with 401 points and an average of 27 points per game, coming in second was Iudy Kutchin with 333 for an average of 15 points, Alice Van Ryswyk following very close with 330 tor a .L4 point average. Due zo the illness of Ianet, LOIB Steenhoek took over the position of post forward for 7 games and netted 127 for an average of 17 points per game. ' The pioneer, William Pulver, 81, son of an early Swiss landholder, was assisted from his room as the flames broke tbrou h from the E roof above the old stone and frame dwelling. ' J Near Prairie City. 2 It is located eight miles south- vwest of Prairie City, Ia., not far ffrom the Polk county line. So famous is the 80-year-old house that its plans several years ago were recorded at the Iibflfy of congress at Washing- ton, D. C. A 17-room structure, it is of the Swiss chalet type. It was built with wooden pegs and bolts. Naug were not used in the original con- struction. - Soml-Invalid. Hr- Pulver. a resident of the house since a child, is a semi-in- valid. He was helped from his room by Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Wicker, who were spending the-day with him. The Wickers' 15-month-old daughter, Alta Fay, also was reg. cued from a downstairs room be- fmefthe flames reached the lower portions of the building. I looked out and saw a peculiar shadow weaving across the yard, Wicker said. Stepping outside, I looked toward the roof. I saw the flames sweeping out of the upper portion of the building. Wicker ran to the attic of the house, a. three-story dwelling. He attempted to beat out the flames, which were spreading rapidly in the face of a strong wind. Realizing his efforts were futile. Wicker hurried to the second floor where Mr. Pulver was resting. Wicker and his wife helped Mr. Pulver outside as the smoke poured in from the quickly advanc- ing fire. Built by Father. The builder of the house, Pul- 1er's father, was Daniel Ferdinand Pulver, a Swiss who came into Iowa a few years following the vpening of that section of the ter- 'ritnrv , ' In building the house he fol- lowed the true architectural lines of Swiss rural home construction. The lower portion of the dwelling was built of stone. Upper parts were walled in brick with outside wood facing. It was similar to the house which had been Pulver's home in the Alps. Cabinet Maker. Pulver in later years supple- mented his farming with wood- work and cabinet making. An extensive coffin making trade was carried on at one time at the resi- dence. The place was filled with heir- looms, all of which were re- ported a total loss. lnsuragce totaling S700 was carried on the residence. A large old fash- ioned loom, used for many years by several generations of the Pulver family, was destroyed. The loom was stored ln the basement. A daughter and son-in-law, Mr. ,and Mrs. Jay McCoy, lived in 'the- home with Mr. Pulver. Mr. and Mrs. Wicker were staying with the elderly man while the other members of the family were shop- ping in Des Moines. Escaped Tornado. The old Pulver home had es- caped destruction two years ago when a tornado carried off the two barn and a hog house from the place. Mlraculously, the h a. r d y pioneer also escaped injury at that time. The twister, moving ln from the west, uprooted two large elms 20 yarde, from the house. A 'the same'tlme, the big funne hoisted one of the barns into the air- where it burst into pieces, sending dorm a torrent of boards and shingles. The storm, however, carried the dehrls to the east before dump- ing it on the ground. The door of the old homestead M657 against Pulver, who stood in the entrance, but he escaped with mlnor Injuries. The Pulver home site i on the old trail from Keokuk to Council Bluffs, Ia., one ol the first across the state. The United Air Lines route le directly overhead. Pulver has spent recent years ln timing the planes as they drone over the house. He re- calls that as a youth he watched for the rattling old stage coaches with the same Interest. It was adjoining the Pulver farm that the Sac and Fox Indians camped after they returned to Iowa from the southwest. A burial ground of that tribe borders on the farm. Selected for Survey. Several years ago the congres- sional library requested blueprints and descriptions of representative pioneer homes in Iowa. The Pul- ver home was one of ll selected by Edgar Harlan, former stale curator. Research workers employed by the works progress administration spent several days compiling the data. Smoldering Embers. Once a favorite site for tourists who like to seek out-of-the-way places, the Pulver residence Sat- urday afternoon was nothing more than a foundation filled with smoldering embers. Only a deli- cately Wrought iron rail, fash- ioned years ago by a village black- smith, was standing on the foun- dation. Among the treasured antiques destroyed ln the blaze were five of the ,coffins Daniel Pulver had made. 'They were the old-fashioned klndf made of walnut and shaped like e klte. We kept them ln e little dark room up in the attic, Mrs. McCoy said. We wanted to keep them be- cause my grandfather had made them. The blaze destroyed two spin- ning wheels, one carder and e number of homespun fabrics. Part of these older possessions had heevl willed by Pulver to the Iowa state historical department. Cause ln Doubt. A considerable amount of house- holdgoods was saved from the more accessible rooms, but the older things, stored away, could not be reached in time. The cause of the fire could not be established definitely. It is be- Llieved a defective flue may have 'BMW V1 blister- 115 Courtesy of IENNINGS 61 VAN'S GARAGE General Repairing 61 Accessories DR.
