Tournament Play The job of recapturing the county title proved difficult as the girls fell to the powerful Baxter sextet 65-51. The Prairie Citians carried home the sectional trophy and along with it 4 victories. They gained a 2-O forfeit of Swan, overwhelmed Kellogg 61-27, pushed past Bondurant 59-36, and out fought Altoona HO-25. Prairie City stacked up 162 points while their opponents collected 88. Colo, their first district rival, couldn't match baskets and trailed at the final gun H9-37. The girls, backed by ex- cited Prairie City fans, came from behind in the last 15 sec- onds to win the district title from Allerton MO-39. The new experience of State Tournament play was realized when the Hdistrict champsu took the floor against Kamrar, March 2d at 7:30. Despite the lack of snow, Santa arrived on time. After a gift exchange, the teachers treated us to candy-bars. Huntington, the nagacian, one morning recruited the help of Charles Keeney, Lawrence Booth, and Harley Thornton. With their more or less reluctant help, he performed several astounding tricks proving that the hand is quicker than the eye. One afternoon two Navy men came to school. Along with the gen- eral information, one of them an experienced diver, told us some interesting facts and stories regarding diving. 'Two outstanding speakers of the year talked about crime. One a renormed .ex-convict, told us the story of'h1s life. He is the only one of his former gang who did not meet death for his misdeeda because only he mended his ways before it was too late. The other, Mr. Brandy, is s former warden of a penitentlary. He has visited prisons all over this country and in Mexico and has witnessed many types of punishment. He feels there should be no capital punish- ment. A cat-o-nlne-talls, a black snake whip, and an electric chair were among the prison equipment he showed. All were formerly used in prisons or on prison farms. ' Several motion pictures were shown throughout the year. Some were instructive while others were quite comical. The cheerleaders did their best to liven the school spirit be- fore each game. One afternoon the entire school marched uptown and cheered. In February the local chapter of the American Legion Autiliary sponsored a national essay contest ln our school. The essays were written on the topic, WOur Great American Heritage--Llbertyu. The contest was open to the eleventh and twelfth grades, but only fif- teen participated. I want this annual reader to realize When interest seems to lag Even though this annual'1s well bound, It shou1dn't be gagged!! ' 'Excuse me,W said Charles K. returning to his seat ln the theater, 'but wasn't it you whose feet I stepped on when I went out?n 'Yes, and I ------- 'Then,0 interrupted Charles squeezing by, Hthis is my row.' Harold C. 'I have always thought I would like to be a mink, than I could hang around beautiful women long after I am dead.' I3I g 9-A W, .-., . . , WV M. ' in . '. Kia..
