rague Yesterday The Alumni of 1908 from Prague High School: joe Polak Frank Vlasak Mary Wolf Emme Suchy Alice Pabian Anna Hausner Emil Texel Downtown Prague in 1928. One hundred years ago, the first settlers staked their homesteads and claimed a town they named 'Praguev as their place to grow. These courageous pioneers faced countless battles against all odds as they struggled to realize their dreams and goals in their new town. Nature itself, such as floods, drought, blizzards, hail and high winds, has played its part well in establishing a role in Prague's history. Personal tragedy, such as fires and deadly epidemics, has also tried to intimidate the early settlers into submission. But through this all, the pioneers of Prague had hope and determination. They fought the hardships and they conquered. And, as a reward for their brave actions, the little town of Prague multiplied. An elevator, post office and bank were established. Schools and churches were built. Businesses joined others and grew. A volunteer Ere department was formed, Telephones, municipal water works and electricity were introduced into Prague 's expanding cultural, center. Paved streets carried the tires of the automo- bile, replacing the horse and buggy era. Through the good years and the bad, through the many changes that marked the coming of the computer age, the people of Prague are continuing to stress the importance of the community, through its elected leaders and volunteers who help with its spiritual growth. As we look back over the one hundred year existence of Prague, we must realize just how drastic the change has been from that first tiny settlement to our village of today. We must also realize that without the courage and determination demonstrated by the early pioneers of Prague, there would not be a Centennial Celebration. It is with this last thought and hope, that this generation of the 1980's, along with the next, be full of the same dreams and goals of the early pioneers and be able to find the same strength and courage to realize them. Reflect on the past . , . for it is a cornerstone to the future. - by Lorri Petrzelka .Qi Our soon to be Low-Income Housing. The jail of yester year,
