One hundred years ago, the first settlers staked their homesteads and claimed a town they named 'Praguev as their place to grow. These courageous pioneers faced countless battles against all odds as they struggled to realize their dreams and goals in their new town. Nature itself, such as floods, drought, blizzards, hail and high winds, has played its part well in establishing a role in Prague's history. Personal tragedy, such as fires and deadly epidemics, has also tried to intimidate the early settlers into submission. But through this all, the pioneers of Prague had hope and determination. They fought the hardships and they conquered. And, as a reward for their brave actions, the little town of Prague multiplied. An elevator, post office and bank were established. Schools and churches were built. Businesses joined others and grew. A volunteer Ere department was formed, Telephones, municipal water works and electricity were introduced into Prague 's expanding cultural, center. Paved streets carried the tires of the automo- bile, replacing the horse and buggy era. Through the good years and the bad, through the many changes that marked the coming of the computer age, the people of Prague are continuing to stress the importance of the community, through its elected leaders and volunteers who help with its spiritual growth. As we look back over the one hundred year existence of Prague, we must realize just how drastic the change has been from that first tiny settlement to our village of today. We must also realize that without the courage and determination demonstrated by the early pioneers of Prague, there would not be a Centennial Celebration. It is with this last thought and hope, that this generation of the 1980's, along with the next, be full of the same dreams and goals of the early pioneers and be able to find the same strength and courage to realize them. Reflect on the past . , . for it is a cornerstone to the future. - by Lorri Petrzelka .Qi Our soon to be Low-Income Housing. The jail of yester year, 'bf nd Today Downtown Prague in 1987 The Prague Centennial Celebration, Celebrating a century of Czech Heritage, began on july 31, 1987 with an Alumni Banquet for everyone who had ever graduated from Prague Public School. Their spouses were also invited at a 510.00 charge for everyone attending. With tours of the school and a museum, the banquet was a success. The night ended with a dance for the alumni. On August 1, many afternoon activities were planned, including a World 's LargestKolacheBake , a 3- Wheeler Pull , and an Accordianjamboree. For the younger generation, there was a Kiddie Paradevand a Children's Olym- pics . For the Polka lovers, the Saunders County Czech Singers, and a concert by Tex Ritter, jr. was planned. On Sunday, August second, a Polks Mass, a parade, and Czech dinner were held in the afternoon, Helicopter rides and continuous street concerts were also planned. A Beard and Dress judging also occurred with the night ending in a Polka Street Dance. Throughout the Centennial a museum was set up in the National Hall, an Antique tractor show was set up on Main Street, and a history of all the business buildings was present. The citizen involvement was tremendous. All of the business owners and other helpful citizens sold raffle tickets and helped spread the word of Prague's Centennial. I think the Centennial will be a lot of fun, but I wish they had something for the teenagers. 1t's all for adults or little kids. They definitely needed a carnival or a band teenagers would enjoy, Seniorjohn Kaspar told us. Carley Urban, a second grader agreed with john about the carnival, but was real excited about going to the Czech Dinner and taking a helicopter ride. Most of the first and second grade boys and girls seem very excited for the fun and laughter to come. No, there is no fast-food restaurants or Cinema 's but there are people who support any school function and are willing to help anyone out. For a writing assignment in En- glish the Sophomores responded to the question asked What do you like about living in a small community? Fresh air, birds singing, hardly any traffic and no worryabout kidnappings or muggings. - Donna Houfek There are no stop lights, town curfews or city cops. - Margaret Stanek Prague is only 15-30 minutes away from other towns. - Carmon Egr Organizations sponsor different activities like Easter Egg Hun ts, Christ- mas sales, dances etc. for the children and adults to enjoy. - Shelly Odvody You can walk down the street and see familiar faces to greet. -Connie Kremlacek in 4 Prague Today Activities Homecoming Brings Alive P.H. As the buzzer sounded, the scoreboard read Stratton - 20 and Prague - 14. The fans roared, Number two on the charts but always number one in our hearts. This year Prague was rated 3rd in the Omaha World Herald. They beat 4 of the 5 top rated teams which all goes to prove the type of schedule the boys played, This year P.H.S, worked with a new coach. F irs t, Asst. coach Foxworthy. I t is dill ficult to evaluate this season. The winfloss fi- gures don 't really tell the complete story as many of our games were close and hard-fough t. The seniors provided experience and leadership. The season was disappointing in that I felt we had very talented athletes, and 1 know they wanted to win! Now Coach Paseka The vol- leyball records this year were not reflective of our hard work and determination in our matches as well as practices. Of our varsity losses seven matches went to three games with over one-half of them close con tests. Four of our losses went to teams who were ra ted in the class D-2 top ten at some point. Our team statistics also improved over last year's tallies. The improvement of skills, determination and team- work provided many close and challenging matches. Girls Basketball 25 Boys Basketball Bouncing Their Way to State The 1986-87 Boys Basketball team bounced their way through many things, such as the loss of onejohnson, the adjustment to the new Chris john- son. The many games we won, and the few we lost. Winning Sub-Districts and then bouncing through Districts and finally bouncing their way to State!! The season started off with a heartbreaking loss to Cedar Bluffs, then to Bradshaw. The Boys bounced back to beat both Rising City and East But- ler. After a loss to Silver Creek, the Boys had a five- win streak until they meet up with Omaha Brownell Talbot and Snyder. The Boys then had five consecu- tive wins, until meeting Amherst. It was a very satisfying season in the fact that no one had expected us to make the State Tourna- ment after starting with a 2-3 record in December, Coach Kevin Behne told us. Coach Behne was also very pleased with a 63.4 average for offensive rebounds and a 51 defensive re- bound average. Coach also was very pleased with the defeat of McCool junction, ranked 3rd, during the regular season. N Senior guard Roger Kubik summed the season-QV, up when he told us, It was a good season, but things 3. could have been better with more effort and hardery practices from the players. ON THE RUN TO NUMBER 1 The 1986-87 school year was an exciting one for the football and boys basketball team. The football team had a record of 8-2 and Went on to State Championships at Campbell. The football team was sent off by a huge pep rally led by the Prague Boosters Club and parents of the football team. Playing during below-freezing tem- pera tures and sleet, the Panthers lost after a 4th quart- er rally by 20-14. Coach Luxford said, The winning tra- dition started by the football team was carried on to the basketball team. It was 30 years since the last football playoffPrague was in. I think we have a shot atplayoffs again next year. The boys basketball team had a very exciting Sta te Tournament trip, After winning big in sub-districts and districts, the boys were seated 3rd. They matched up with 6th ra ted Amherst. Breaking a state record with their 3 overtime game, every player and fan was ex- hausted and anguished when the boys fell short by 3 points. Amherst went on to be D-2 State Runner-ups. Coach Behne, talking of his team 's state tournament game, T he boys played some of the best basketball I ever saw them play. Even though We lost, the boys have nothing to be ashamed of they ga ve it their best effort. als X '3 A Q s li- it QL:-iff? aa 24 ' L 4 fqp F11 ij Top: Football team. Ji as GUIDE TO SURVIVE Let's face it-everyone needs a little help in their life to help them survive-whether it is advice about homework, boyfriends, girlfriends, or just coping with those Monday mornings. If you walk through the hallways at PHS you will always hear some juicy gossip of what people did on the weekend. Sometimes just sit back and think How could they do that in one night? Or what about some of those classes when the night before you stayed up watching T. V or studying for the big test? To help you out, we asked students some of these questions and here's your Guide To Survive. WW ...,Q2f5s', WEE is get ww .e,,a,.e..t W- f.--. ' ' ' ff. Students do on the Weekends There are an unlimited number of things. Students can be found at their friend's house most of the time. They practically live there. As you can see in the picture below of Brenda B. and Tracy Vanek at Tracy's home. Some kids do have to work on weekends. Many work on farms as seen below, Scott Polacek and Chris johnson working with corn. No matter how cold it is outside, weekends can be enjoyed at a Prague game. Kids do have a tendency to visit other schools' games even though it might sound like a good excuse to a parent. Swimming, roller skating, bowling, and hunting are a few things that students enjoy. Swimming is Marie McCullick, Connie Stava, and Scott Polacek having a splash of a time in the pool at Peru State College. This year, since we're running with PHS, we decided to tell you what the Panthers need, class-wise. This whole section is all about classes we take, enjoy, or dread. School life plays a big part in our Pan ther lives, and taking the right class may help decide what happens after graduation. We ha ve new clas- ses, required classes, and optional classes all in our school system. Go onward, read and . . . Run PHS! At right- Relaxation time in the gym over noon break to catch up on all the latest news. Above- Mr. Brabec enjoys running the fun with his jr. High class. Below- Scott Polacek models his new designer dressing while working with acids. A a Q Z A H v V1 A h Running the Fun Mr. Brabec's class is taken because of requirements and because of fun. We asked what the most exciting thing was about taking a class with Mr. Brabec. Little did we know that the Art room would be bombarded with answers!! 'Everything dies!! Connie Kratky exclaim- ed. Scott Polacek jumped in with, Gary and he had a bet if a plant would survive the year, and it seems to be looking weaker already! So we took in to consideration that Mr. Brabec is . . . shall we say . . . exciting in his high school classes. But maybe he tones down for jr. High. Wrong! jeff Sousek told us about the time Mr. Bra- bec stood on a desk to prove a point. What point we asked. jenny Vanek laughed, 'He jumped off the desk to act like he was flying! But it's not just goofing off in Mr. Brabec's class. Many students said that they learned fun and exciting things. Marie McCullick discovered not to play with acids. Kim Smith learned about the body in Physiology. Doug Havlovic participat- ed in dissecting frogs !funPj. And Joni johnson learned the most important thing. 'Y don 't like to take notes!! Mr. Brabec is also the Guidance Counselor for PHS. When asked how he feels about this, Mr. Bra- bec replied, 'T enjoy trying to help students with their problems. It gives a more personal side. The students agree that this is a good idea and everyone seems to agree that Science class has it's moments of Running with the Fun. School Life i' Ln., ENGLISH English-the required class everyone must take. The word brings terror to some, no feelings to others, and joy to a few. Some kids love and some kids hate the class but not the teacher, Mrs. Linda Foxworthy. The vote is practically unanimous that Mrs. Fox- worthy tries to make grammar and literature fun. 'T like teaching English because for one thing its a re- quired class so I get to see every student. 'T ggl T When asked how she feels when students com- ' Nxem plain about having to take English or Literature, she said, It depends what kind of mood I 'm in, 1 a 'fyou-should-be-gra teful or tough-life's-not-easy-for-you mood. It's a challenge because not only Working' for 8 Change m students who are good at it are in here. As for the student's view, Tim Hennessey summed it up with the reply to this question: Why do you like the teacher or the class? She is a good teacher so I like the class and I get to finish a lot of the other work from other classes. Although many students agree its difficult, most say they are learning for the future. English class! HOME ECONGMICS You'Ve run a long way baby! Home Ec. class has really changed in the past years. A class that used to be learning to cook and basic sewing skills has turned into much more. Home Economics is required for female students in 7th , grade through 9th grade. After these three years it becomes op- ', Rx tional. 'G In the 7th grade class, the girls learn mainly about basic food and nutrition. They also scan over grooming and basic clothing skills. The one and only 8th grade girl this year, jenny Vanek, says she gets a semester of Basic Clothing. 'Being alone, it gets really boring. It's easier though because I get more help. The 9th grade have a comprehensive class. They learn mainly about housing, dating, and clothing. The 10th grade, during lst semester, learn about Food and Nutrition, and in the 2nd semester they learn more about cloth- ing. The juniors have a fun year with Housing lst semester, and Child Development in second semester. The Seniors are able to take two Home Ec. classes. Home Ec. IV is Advanced Clothing Textiles and Advanced Nutrition and Food. The other class is Adult Living which Seniors girls or boys can take. In Adult Living the Seniors spend one semes- ter on Consumer Education and one on Parenting Education. As you can tell, the Home Ec. Department keeps Mrs. Joyce Paseka very busy. uv-1 S EHgliShfH0mG ECOHOHUCS Picture on the top left: Chris and Cory really enjoy domestic chores. Bottom: Brian, I think you need to shave! Mr. Hansen commented, Society has made computer knowledge a must. 14 Math, Computer Hola, Que tal . . . words from another language-or from another world? Thirteen people dared to learn this mumble- jumble this year. The classes met every day in the Audio Visual KAJU Room instructed by Miss Beans. They Watched films, studied, read stories, studied, talked on the phone to a Spanish instructor Iyuckj, and studied. But their classes were not all work and no play. On certain days they cooked food that came up in their Spanish dialogue. What 's Happening? In the History Classes at RHS. Students are either sleeping or watching others sleep. Well, not really-even though they complain history is boring taking notes and having everything repeated over, many stu- dents enjoy it and would take history if it wasn 't required. Mr. Behne's explanation for complaining students is They complain just to hear themselves talk. Although Connie Kratky added, He is one of those teachers who loves to talk, talk and talk. You can find the jr. High trying to get enough passes to go to other rooms but they study the basic geography and the affect it has on human activities with a 9 week study of Nebraska History. Freshmen 's course in CIVICS isn't just counting the minutes until the bell rings but of citizen- ship in our gov't and the modern problems of the world. W01'1d HiSfOIy is the hardest to understand and learn for a sophomore according to Mr. Behne because people, places and ideas are studied and compared from country to country. The only way Sasa W. said to live through it is sleep with your eyes open. The juniors course in American HiStO1y acquain ts the student with how American society developed in the last 120 years-not pick up hints on how to keep your foot on a trash can but never fall in. Although Marie M. said I t should be halfway decent in trivial pursuit . American GOVCr11m611l' tries helping the seniors decide why gov't is needed and ready them for the adult world. Mr. Behne wishes he'd only have one session of geography but as his ton of 9 length chalk would have it, he teaches a Sr. High GCOgra- phy that alternates every year with Economics. This is the only elective history class where it's up to the student if he wishes to have his eyes double focus from looking at the black board so long. As you can see from the picture at right, a lot can happen with the ultimate history teacher at PJ-LS. No Doubt About It! Vo-Ag Students at P.H.S. Learn Because Prague is a rural community and agri- culture is the main industry, some may think the stu- dents would know almost everything already. Well, that's not true. The students 'list of things they never ever knew before range from using sa ws, judging soil, the types of beef and swine, making wire, building garages to welding. Mr. Collins added, The most im- portant thing the Vo-Ag students can learn is that Ag is our ever changing industry and to be successful you need to keep abreast of those changes. Two changes in the class schedule this year were the start of an Ag-Business class which deals with Human Relations, Salesmanship, Distributing, Ad- vertising, etc. of Ag products. Cory P. recommends the class to students who want to get into business occupation. I t is a GREAT class, as Chris E. said. The second was the arrival of a student teacher who graduated from the Ashland-Green wood High School-Lisa Haldeman. Before she left on Dec. 17, 1986 she commented, 'lreally enjoyed student teach- ing here at Prague! The staff here have been super! These students worked hard planning pages, developing and printing pic- tures, and meeting company deadlines. The annual staff had a raffle for an annual with tick- ets being sold by the staff members. The highest sales per- son was Brenda: she received a free annual. The winner of the drawing was Mr. Luxford. Ads were sold to Prague and surrounding areas. The annual staff sold over 82,000 which covered about M of the cost of the annual. This year the annual staff asked all the students in the school to design an annual cover and the winner would Win a free annual. The student body voted on a cover that they liked. The winner was Tracy Vanek with the idea of RUN PHS. The staff planned the annual this year to include more student life, accent on different classes, art work, and dif ferent usages of gray and, to the students' dismay, slots of copy. The making of the annual became a class this year for the first-time in a number of years. It enabled more time spent on thought and planning for the entire book.
