' 'For the Lord God bg will help meg therefore shall I not be con- founded: there- fore have I set my face like a flint, and 1 know that I shall not be ashamed. Isa. 50:7 DR. IOHN A. DAVIS R. JOHN A. DAVIS was a man of vision, conviction and consecration. He had the vision to see the need of a place for young people to train for Christian service. He saw in the Old White City Amusement Park, no longer a house of wickedness with its dance halls, its skating rink, its beer garden, and its gambling dens, but the Practical Bible Training School, with its halls of learning, its dining room, its dormitories and its prayer closets. He saw, no longer drunkards and criminals reeling away from its grounds, but preachers, and missionaries and Bible Teachers marching away from its campus. He saw second and even third generation young people following in the footsteps of their parents and grand- parents, training in the same Alma Mater. His vision took in the thousands of souls not only in this country but around the world who would accept Christ through the efforts of the graduates of this school. As he knelt in prayer behind a tree in the old amusement park and asked God to give him the disreputable place, he in- visioned the conversion of that stronghold of Satan into a monument to the Grace of God. He had the conviction that what is the will of God, by the grace of God can be done. His faith never wavered. The dollar given him by a washerwoman was the indication of God's will, and he was confident that God who had begun a good work would perform it until the day of jesus Christ. His conviction was so strong that no one could convince him that he was wrong in trusting God to fulfill His promise. He was unshakeable and steadfast in his purpose and in his belief in the infallibility of God's Word and in his firm adherence to its doctrines. He had the consecration to give himself and all he had in order to realize his vision and to prove his con- viction. When it became a choice between their home and the school, he and his equally consecrated wife cheerfully sacrificed their home that the school might be spared. No sacrifice was ever too great for him to make for the school or one of its students. He often went without things he needed that some student might have. He needs no monument to mark the place where his body has lain these twenty-one years, for his me- morial is in the school which his vision, conviction and consecration under God have builtg and in the lives of nearly fifteen hundred graduates who have been trained to preach the gospel of jesus Christ around the worldg and in the thousands of souls which have been led to Christ through their preaching and personal work. And that monument is daily growing greater and is more enduring than marble, for it is eternal. Indeed, Dr.Davis labored with etemity's values in view, and only eternity can measure the greatness of his work. God found a man He could use, and used him greatly for his glory. Hilda I. Copley 6
And God is able I ' to make all grace abound toward you,' that ye, always having all sufficiency in , all things, may 1 1 abound to every Z good work. ' ' II Corinthians 9:8 MRS. JOHN A. DAVIS SAlAl-l's words, ln quietness and in confidence shall be your strength, remind one of Mrs. john A. Davis who, in the later years of her life, was known to all on the campus as Mother Davis. She was a most gracious lady, queenly in her bearing, her sympathy and understanding reaching out to each member of her large P.B.T.S. family. To know her was to realize that her life was one of faith, prayer and devotion to her Saviour. Her faith was exhibited from the earlier days of her life, when Dr. John A. Davis, in response to the re- vealed will of God, established the Practical Bible Training School, until the curtains parted and she slipped through to be with her Redeemer. A true Christian helpmeet, she entered with her husband into a life of com- plete trust in God for the supplying of means necessary for the founding of the School. Faith carried her through the many years of trial and testing that followed as the School became firmly established. Hers was a life of prayer, --otherwise, how could the testings, the trials, the burdens, and heartaches have been endured with the joy which always radiated from her life. Mother Davis knew what it was to be burdened for the material needs of the school, for the development of individual students and for the spirit- ual welfare of all in P.B.T.S. She knew what it was to be parted from loved ones by death. But through it all she could smile because she lived in close communion with her Lord. Her consecrated life of prayer carried her victoriously through. A person could not be in the presence of Mother Davis long without sensing that her life was one of utter surrender and devotion to Christ. Some of the rich and precious experiences of school life, for those who had the privilege of attending school while she was still living, were those times when she stood before the student body and graciously and lovingly led each one into a time of heart searching communion with the Lord. Her own love and devotion to her Saviour was felt in a very real way. She was, indeed, a queen among women but this was because she had leamed well that in quietness and in confidence was her strength. Nellie A. Manley In loving memory of our Father and Mother, Dr. and Mrs. John A. Dovis DR. ond MRS. GORDON C. DAVIS Bible School Pork, New York 7
