Brown's consecrated life, his pious devotion to God, and his willingness to serve have been a constant source of inspiration to us during our soiourn here at Bible School Park. Because of his passion for lost souls, he has labored with untiring efforts to open closed' churches where people can hear the Gospel. Using his God-given talents, he has organized many fields of service, where the Gospel is now being preached. Eternity alone will reveal the fruits of his labors. We are challenged, as we are about to go forth into the Lord's harvest field, by the fine Christ-like example he has set before us. His classes here at school have been a source of real blessing to us, and many of the things he has taught us have been gleaned from his own wide experience. He has given us many practical suggestions and helps which will better fit us for the Lord's service. Titus 2:13 I 14 fllemormm g T HE sudden and unusual death of our brother, Stuart R. Henline, on August l2, l953, came as a great shock to his many Christian friends. The word was first received at Bible School Park and as it spread out to his classmates and fellow-students all felt a great loss. Prom ted by Christian love for the Henline family, many prayers were offered up in behalf of Mrs. Henline andltheir two children, Jane and Dana. We know these prayers were answered because of Mrs. Henline's personal testimony. She said, I am not bitter toward God, as many think I should be but I onl love my Lord more and I am more anxious than ever to be with Him forever. Never before did I miss heaven so much. At times such as this Romans 8:28 is brought to our minds, All things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose. Isaiah 55:8 states, For m thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. Eternity alone will reveal the results in the hearts of many young eople because of the home-going of our brother. We know of one young couple who have dedicated their lives to the Lord for full-time service for Him through thisevent. Just three days before his death Mr. Henline was asked if he had any fear of death. His testimony was, No, I am ready to meet my Lord. While we feel a great loss through our brother's home-going, what a victory has been his as he met his Saviour face to face. Sponsored through the courtesy of MR. AND MRS. ' ' W I sa . 50: 7 6 V DR. JOHN A. DAVIS 'I' HE late, Dr. John A. Davis, founder of the Practical Bible Training School, was known to all as being out- standing in his sacrificial living. He, by the grace of God, learned what it meant to be all on the altar for His Master and His service. There was nothing in this material world that he would not relinguish if only the Lord would be glorified and honored. We saw this time and again in his work. It was especially proven when he and his family gave up their own home to save the School. There was nothing before him but the dedicated purpose to glorify His Lord and the training of 'Young people for the Gospel ministry. lf ever there was a man who knew the meaning of consecration, it was he. He, many times out of his own meager resources, would so unselfishly help those who needed it. He believed in the spiritual investment in the lives of the students. His devotion, courage, faith, deep consecration, liberality, and determination were a real challenge to all. His messages from Gocl's Word were power-packed by the Spirit of God. Many hundreds of Christian men and women are a living testimon today of his faithful ministry. lt is candidly to be stated, that as he preached, he llvecl-- A workman that neecfeth not to be ashamed. His labor of love and passion to help others carried him man times beyond his physical capacity. Many slee less nights he spent in prayer with the burden and concern he had for others. Many a student this day would not be in the ministry were it not for the many prayers, faith, and help from this man of God. This is a life that has been poured out on the altar of sacrifice and one of devotion and faithful service to our Lord. --Theodore Wimer ln loving memory of our Father, John A. Davis DR. and MRS. GORDON C. DAVIS I2 Ami ' 'And God is able to make all grace ' -abound toward Z you: that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may 5 abound to everyg good work. ' ' II Corinthians 9:8 Z. 6 MRS. JOHN A. DAVIS E ACH home needs a mother and as such I would like to pay tribute to Mrs. John A. Davis, Mother of Practical Bible Training School. As they would go to a mother, the students could go to her, knowing that her heart of love would under- stand their problems and joys. Together in prayer they would take the problems to the Father, and He would give His peace. We could share our ioys with her, knowing that she would reioice with us, thus obe ing Romans 12:15, Reioice with them that do reioice and weep with them that weep. She truly carriecilout the command, too, of Galatians 6:2, Bear ye one another's burdens. Being the wife of a pastor-evangelist and having passed through tests of the same nature, she knew how to bear the burdens of others. She always had a smile on her lips and in her eyes although she had burdens of her own. She sacrificed her own home life, which means so much to a real mother, to live at the School in order that young men and women might be trained for the Lord's service. Her life of consecration and devotion to her precious Lord was constantly a pattern to the young folk as they went out to establish Christian homes of their own . As her strength failed and she was not able to take an active part in the school life, she was still Mother to the students and Alumni. When returning for a visit to Practical Bible Training School, the Alumni went to Mother Davis, knowing full well that she was as interested in her children out in the harvest field of the world as when they were students under her tender, loving care. Her children arise up to call her blessed. --Lila Wimer In loving memory of our Mother, Mrs. John A. Davis DR. and MRS. GORDON C. DAVIS I3 QW Pffefzbienl DR. GORDON C. DAVIS Thou must be true thyself If thou the truth woulds't teach. It needs the overflow of heart To give the lips full speech. WE, the Class of I954, highly regard you, Dr. Davis, for your consecrated Christian spirit and for your faithfulness as you carry on the great work of our School. As we've received innumerable blessings from our training here, we realize something of the sacrificial labor that you've given to make this training possible. Recognizing that many times the path has been rough and situations impossible, we know that you have kept your trust in God and believed that no matter what happens God is still on His Throne. We cannot fully express to you our appreciation for all that P.B.T.S. has meant in our lives, and only eternity will reveal the challenge and inspiration that we have received from your life and teaching as we have learned not to be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. Our prayers continue with you even though we're far away. May God richly bless, guide, and strengthen you as you labor in His service. And H25 VW 6 ' MRS. GORDON C. We have found it a pleasure during this time to accept your counselling and advice because our testimony in word is always accentuated b your testimony In deed. You have gone with us to the Throne of Grace to seek God's guidance and direction in our behalf. We praise God for your personal interest in each individual student. Sponsored through the courtesy of LIBERTY BAPTIST CHURCH Jewish Missions 2I North Main Street Pray for the work among the Jews Liberty, New York REV. HARRY M. FARGO I4 From The Fvlculzy G ROWTH is one of the most desired characteristics of life. It implies an increase in the amount of a particular substance without a decrease in quality. It is a marked indication of health. Various activities may be carried on to stimulate growth but actually all such increase comes from God. Paul may plant, Apollos may water, and ther both might pull weeds, but the actual Photosynthesis that produces more and more cells in any particu ar plant is controlled by some force far above man. Various animals may eat and rest and exercise, but the rocess of oxidation that produces heat, energy, and tissues is generated independently of any known earthlly power. The formula for growth in the spiritual realm seems to be very similar to that of the material world. To be sure, one could not be expected to grow very rapidly or to any great size spiritually without feeding frequently and heartily upon the Word of God. Equally important would be the exercise of prayer and Christian witness- ing. But the actual increase comes from the One who said, l am the vine, ye are the branches, He that abideth in me, and l in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. A branch may appear to be an independent organism, but it is really iust more of the original vine. And the branch cannot grow or produce fruit without a vital contact with the source of life out of which it sprang. In like manner, Seniors, l am sure that you will always remember that your Christian growth is really Christ's growth in you. He can only add to Himself in you when He has vital contact with your individual souls. So abide in Him. Do not neglect to exercise as He gives the strength, but above all just rest in Him, waitupon His natural from-faith-to-faith increase of Himself in your souls, and there can be no end to your spiritual growth until you stand before Him in glory. To The Fazculgf F OR the unnumbered ways in which you have been a blessing to us the past three years, we, the Class of '54, , wish to extend our most sincere thanks and heartfelt appreciation. We cannot thank God enough for per- mitting us to attend a school where the Lord Jesus Christ is exalted as He' is here. We know that only a deep love for our Lord and a desire to do His will could make you the blessing you have been to us. Our prayer is that each of us may have something of that same love to carry with us out into our Christian ministry. Your labors of love will continue with us throughout the remainder of our lives, and only the Lord knows how much they will accomplish. Although we soon will be going out into the fields into which our Lord has called us, we have the blessed hope of being united eternally with our blessed Saviour. What a wonderful reunion that will bel Until that time comes, we trust that the Lord will use you, your talents, and your lives to send many more ministers of the blessed Gospel out into the great harvest fields. We cannot help but thank and praise God for the privilege of attending a school where each and every member of the entire staff has consecrated his life to the Lord's service. We know there has had to be great sacri- fices in many cases in order that we could enioy the wonderful blessings that have been ours during our time of preparation here. We also would like to mention the many blessings we have received in fellowship with you. We know we cannot fully realize the privilege of fellowship such as this until after we have gone from this Christian School into our different fields of service. In the short time we have been together, I have enjoyed working with you and can say with Paul, the Apostle, I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with ioy, for your fellowship in the Gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this very thing, that He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. I am confident that God will keep your minds and hearts steadfast as you endeavor to walk along life's pathway. In Ephesians we are admonished to walk after the Spirit and to put on the new man which is in Christ Jesus. Our minds must be renewed in order to manifest the Spirit of Christ in our lives, as we are told in the Word to be ye transformed by the renewing of your minds. We can never be Christ-like until we com- pletely yield our minds as well as our bodies to God. God wants a yielded life to use for His glory. Also in Ephesians we are told not to grieve the Holy Spirit by malice, bitterness, and anger but we are to be kind, tenderhearted, forgiving one another. This spirit is a humble spirit which allows us to be true followers of God. As believers we can learn not to be as fools but must redeem the time, understanding what the will of God is. Also we must be equipped to go forward, overcoming all obstacles by being filled with the Spirit, giving thanks always for Qlthings unto God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. God wants us to be strong in Him and in the power of His might. This can be accomplished when we yield ourselves completely to Him, when we arm ourselves with the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, and when we pray without ceasing. My sincere prayer for each one of you is that you may be so yielded to the will of God and be so Spirit filled that God may use you to win lost souls for Him. Sponsored through the courtesy of MR. 8. In our mission for Christ, whether at home or abroad, no task or station should be too humble for one who loves the Lord. Z.,- -.,.f ,,.- ,.- Z- 37 From The fumbzff O NLY a few short weeks and your three wonderful years of preparation will be ended. As we have been privileged to-spend these two years with you, we have observed your steady growth in the three phases of preparation necessary for Christian service. We have seen how Jesus has come to mean more to you and how you have sought to glorify Him in every activity. Your desire to know His will and your willingness to obey it has revealed how much you have grown in the phase of your preparation concerning Jesus. By seeking to win souls to Christand to be a blessing to Christians, you have demonstrated that others have received the necessary consideration in your preparation. Our class has greatly benefited from the example you have set in these matters. Last of all, your lives have proved that you ourselves have grown spiritually during the years of training. This preparation of your spiritual life will always be something you can look back upon with thanksgiving and ioy. lf you always put Jesus, first, Others second, and Yourself last, you will be successful for God. How- ever, all the preparation you have received here must be only a foundation and starting place for future building of a life thoroughly furnished for God 's service. T 0 The fumbfff A S our time of preparation draws to a close, we thank God for the 'privilege of knowing and having Christian fellows ip with you. We praise God for your obedience in answering His call to come to P.B.T.S., and our prayer for you is that you will continue to follow where our Lord may lead. Remember always that a Christian worker is good, a worker in Christ is better, but Christ in a worker is best. As you continue to prepare for our Lord's service, there will be times of testing and there may be trials along the way. But do not become discouraged, because God has promised in His Holy Word that He will be with you to give grace and strength to meet your every need. ll Cor. 9:8 - And God isable to makeil race abound toward you, that ye, alwag having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every goi work. . . .My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will l rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. ll Cor. l2:9. May God richly bless you as you finish your training at P.B.T.S. and may you truly have a greater vision of the fields white unto harvest. All that you long to do as a Christian, all that you long to do for God, are within the possibilities of faith. But it is also with ioy and delight as we see you enter the halls of service for our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. For three years you have been preparing for this ioyous mission. ln Eph. 6:15, we read that we are to have our feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace. You came to Bible School with your hearts on fire to learn more about this Gospel of Peace. Now you have a firm foundation so that you may hold fast the profession of your faith without wavering. Soon you will be prepared to go and give that peace to those who know it not. You have been established not only in the classroom, but also in practical service for the King. Your training has shown you how to live day by day with your fellowmen. May you, therefore, continue in the love and will of the Father. I We have loved and honored you because your lives of consecration to the Saviour have brought many blessings to us. With many heartfelt and fervent prayers, we wish you Godspeed on your iourney into the future. We look upon you as younger brothers and sisters in Christ, and we desire to leave with you a chal- lenge to continue your studies, that you too may go Forward With Christ. We trust that no matter what trials may overtake you, you will say with the Psalmist in Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life, ofwhom shall l be afraid? We become like that on which our hearts are fixed. God's calling is His enabling. Let us live as though Christ were crucified yesterday, risen today, coming tomorrow. -Luther He who stands straightest in the presence of sin bows lowest in the presence of God. It is not how much we have, but how much of us God has. We can always be happy through sorrow when we are standing in the sunshine. The Christian life is not a negative affair, It is a positive business. Man is either born once and dies twice or else he is born twice and dies once. Build a little fence of trust around today, Fill the space with loving deeds and therein stay, Look not through the sheltering bars upon tomorrow, God will help thee bear what comes of Ioy and sorrow. Lost but Jesus found me, -blind, but now I see,- Bound, but Halleluiahl Christ has set me free. The Missionary Fellowship meets each week to pray for those who have answered the call and have gone forth into the harvest fields. This year we have had the privilege of hearing some chal- lenging messages from Rev. Theodore Wimer, missionary to Africa. Through his messages we have seen the real conditions of the mission field and can now pray more intelligently for those who have given their lives that those in heathen darkness might hear and receive the Gospel of Christ. MESSIANIC FELLOWSHIP The Messianic group was organized for the purpose of meeting once a week to pray for Jewish Evangelism around the world and for those who are preaching the Gas el to God's chosen people. We believe that this is a priviiege and also a duty that Christians everywhere should not neglect. Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. This verse has challenged many of the students of P. B. T.S. to have Bible Clubs in homes, churches and other meeting places in the Triple Cities area to reach boys and girls for Jesus. The children are taught Bible stories, Scripture verses, and choruses about our Sav- ior. lt has been our privilege to see many of these precious ones changed from sadness to gladness be- cause they have taken Christ as their Savior at one of these Clubs. l l PASTORS And he gave some .... pastors. Eph. 4:lI The pastorate is one of the many fields of Chris- tian service engaged in by students here at P. B.T. S. It is, doubtless, one of the most important iobs in the Christian world and cannot be overestimated. Some of the students open churches that previous- ly have been closed and located in areas without a Gospel witness, while others are called to serve as pastors in various places where the work is growing. Serving the Lord in this capacity is not easy and, on the part of the pastor, requires much labor, pa- tience, and sacrifice. Through the efforts of these student pastors many churches have been built up, many Christians have been aided, and many souls have been won to the Lord Jesus Christ. GOOD WILL MISSION WORK God has said in His Word, Where there is no vision, the people perish. Our students have caught this vision and God is using them in numerous ways in His vineyard. He has called some to serve Him at the Good Will Mission in Binghamton where there are numerous opportunities for witnessing. Some take part in the rescue service and in the street meeting, while others take part in Sunday School, Jr. Church, Young Peoples, Sunday morning and evening services, mid- week prayer service, home calling and in hospital visitation where the students personally witness to the patients. As the students have prayed, God has worked in marvelous ways and many unsaved have come to love and trust our wonderful Lord as their personal Savior. Davis suggested that those students representing different na- tionalities should put on a little skit, speak- ing in their own native languages and trons- lating. This was well-liked Ly the late Dr. John A. Davis, president and founder of our School, who was always looking for new i eas. He saw the great possibility in this skit to point lost souls to the Lord Jesus Christ. As a result, this program was given in Johnson City, New York, and then in small surrounding towns and cities. lt has been given over 7,000 times, in every State in the Union, in Canada and Mexico. For the past 27 years, under the direction of Dr. and Mrs. M. C. I 14 fpom 'I' HURSDAY evenings during the winter term one will find many P.B.T.S. students and teachers iourneying to North High School in Binghamton to watch Coach Brown's A and B basketball teams compete in the Evangelical Church League. Although volleyball and softball are also among the s orts of the School, basketball is the only sport which provides outsiclz compe- tition, and even in this way, our boys are enabled to proclaim Christ as they fellowship with the members of the other teams in the League. Sports are not emphasized here at P. B.T.S., but they do offer the students a time of relaxation and healthy enjoyment. Last year our boys won both the A and B championships and we are striving for this goal again this year. However, if it does not please God to allow us to have this victory, we can still proclaim Christ by being good losers and showing forth true Christian sportsmanship. October 6, 7, and 8 were set aside for this purpose. Little did we realize the tremendous blessings which were to be ours as Dr. Tommy Lawrence ministered to us. It seemed that the Holy Spirit was preparing us for these messages. The opening service Tuesday morning was given over to Rev. John Whitney, 'I3. His topic was The Pastor and His Calling. We were made to realize that calling was an essential and important part of the ministry. The two o'cIock session was given over to Harry Burgen who presented the needs in the Jewish field of evangelism. At three o'cIock Dr. Lawrence began his series of messages which he entitled Great Christological Pas- sages of the BibIe. It was with regret that Dr. Lawrence could only stay with us for the first two days. He was called away to superintend the funeral service of his late friend, Joseph Hoffman Cohn. Before Dr. Lawrence left, the audience unanimously consented to invite him back as Re- treat speaker next year. Rev. Douglas Roe of Montrose, Pennsylvania, was then invited to speak and conclude the Alumni Retreat for I953. Other notable speakers from our own graduates were Rev. James Rosner, '37 who spoke to us on, The Pastor and His Study, and Rev. John Fleck, '39 - The Pastor and His Books. Speaking for missions were Rev. Benjamin Harter, 'I7, Belgian Congo, Miss June Snyder, '49, and Lawrence Wigden, '32. Retreat time was truly a time of spiritual refreshing. Tomorrow's plans l do not know, I only know this minute, But He will say, This is the way, By faith now walk ye in it. And lam glad that it is so, Today's enough to bear, And when tomorrow comes, His grace shall far exceed its care What need to worry then, or fret, The God who gave His Son Holds all my thoughts and Moments in His hand, And gives them one by one.
