♦ WL UHL m v mmmsm mm.ra‘7 4 RESENTS HE SEN I OR 0.KS'b ♦ YOU, LAURANCE THURSTON GLADLY WOULD HE TEACH , AND GLADLY WOULD HE LEARN Dedication is decided by members of the Senior Class, who choose the person they feel has influenced them the most in their four years of high school and who has done the most for the school. The dedication is truly the special part of the annual and we, the Senior Class, have dedicated our annual to a truly special person, Mr. Thurston. 4 ■ME TO CHERISH •V - •v - INISTRATION STEERING THE SHIP TO THE CLASS OF ’78 The opportunity for participation in the adult world is here. You have been provided with an excel- lent educational opportunity here at Poynette High School. 1 hope that each of you leaves P.H.S. with a feeling of accomplishment and having contributed to making P.H.S. a good school. Best wishes as you accept the challenges of adult- hood!!! Mr. Noble Administrator Mi. Noble Administrator TO THE CLASS OF ’78 With the completion of the 1977-78 Poynette High School annual, several observations can be offered to apply in a timely way to you, a student. This publication signals the conclusion of another school year. From my vantage point, 1 could give many positive reactions from an educational and so- cial standpoint. The major determinent as to the value of the past nine months, however, must be made indi- vidually by each student and his respective experiences and accomplishments. I hope that your afterthought about 1977-78 is positive and will meet your needs for your educational development. Where on one hand, this book represents a story of a school year, it repre- sents, in part, one chapter in the story of your life. This, in itself, should be a treasure to you. To the Class of 1978,1 would like to commend you on your interest, achievement, and cooperation. May this type of spirit and effort continue in your future endeavors. Special appreciation is extended to those students who gave substantial time and effort toward making this yearbook what it is. Mr. Hanick Principal 8 Richard Hanick Principal BACK ROW: Mr. E. HELPING HANDS The secretaries and bus drivers are faithful people who are always there to lend a helping hand. The secretaries aid all students in countless ways when- ever possible. The bus drivers faithfully deliver many students to school each day, despite the inclement weather. Without these untiring individuals behind the scenes, the school certainly would not be able to function efficiently. 14 WILLING HEARTS To these fine people, we owe our hearty thanks. There’s always a janitor around to turn up the heat, or let us into a room for that forgotten book or instrument! Those extra pizzaburgers or cinnamon rolls, given to us by the cooks, al- ways settle well in a hungry stomach! These are only a few of the extras that the cooks and janitors add to their daily chores to help us each day. Once again, “Thank you!” 15 Was that... an axlotl?! Good drive, sir. I hope these few months of ex- perience in a new culture helped myself and the people that lived next to me, in different periods of the day and in several situations of my A.F.S. year in U.S.A. to un- derstand the people from a new society. This year can be the pos- sibility to confront the personal society’s structures with those of another country with different cul- tures, uses, customs, way of life. The meet of new ideas, people and experiences give to the indivi- dual the possibility to build his personality, knowledge, character to try to understand each other and himself. So this experience was also of the people’s that meet me. My family in Poynette is Dor- is and John McMillan as my par- ents, Sonia for my sister, and Reed and Robbie as brothers. Life here was very different from my usual life in Italy ; the school, the politi- cal life, the Italian way of life, our culture are really very far from the American style of society. My family in Italy is composed of Marniga Savardi Maria, my Moth- er, and my brothers, Antonio, Gian, Mario, and Carlo. In Italy 1 am attending an Italian High School that is usually five years long. We go to school six days ev- ery week for about 34-40 full hours a week. We have open time just for lunch. We do not change class between semesters. In Italy there are several different kinds of High School with different kinds of studies, and if you want to go to one kind of H.S. you have to study the class that the institute requests. You cannot decide to change class but just kind of institute. We do not use annuals, class rings, or senior key, and we do not have the kind of clubs you have here. Italy is a European country twice the size of Wisconsin and with the population about 60,000,- 000. It’s geographical surface is mostly mountains or hillockly with rare real plains. Italy’s histor- ical and cultural life and patrimony was and is very ample. In Italy, and generally in Europe, were born the greatest philosophical, political, artistical ideas and move- ments. The history of Europe has always seen a big cultural yeast that from the ancient Greek phil- osofics to the illuminist ic and humanistic periods since to the student contestation of the May of of 1968 has given life to move- ments of opinions that has changed the course of the history of the world. Our cities are very differ- ent from the typical American cities, usually we keep the histor- ical center with all the monuments and the best artistic and cultural part of the ancient city. This urban- istic and architectonic idea is com- mon in all the European cities, so in Rome, London, Paris, Venice or Florence, you can find the old buildings between the new cement. The Italian political life is also very different from the American. We have a parlimentary govern- ment with a president of the na- tion and several different parties that form a coalition to make up the government. I like travel in different country such as France, Holland, Belgium, England, etc. I am planning to go to university for scientific study but I do not know where yet. 1 generally like all the sports, like basketball, rugby, swimming, etc. During this year 1 have had the possibility to know and to see more about America and make more friends. 1 have had the pos- sibility to discuss opposing views about Italy and other things. I am grateful to the McMillan family for taking me in as a new member of their family. Thank you. The 1977 Homecoming festivities were kicked off by the Challenging Chicken Chase, Pep Rally, and Bon- fire on Thursday evening, October 6. Friday’s activities included the parade, the exciting Homecoming game, and ended with the dance. The theme for the night was “You Light Up My Life.” King, Tom Miles and Queen, Lois Barger reigned over the evening along with Prince, Roy Reek and Princess, Kris Koepke; Prince, Brian Lehr and Princess Suzie Wade. Spirits ran high as the band, “Spring Fever,” played into the night. The rain could not dampen the festive spirit of Homecoming 1977. 45 HOMECOMING MEMORIES . . . BEST OF MY LOVE On May 14, 1977, the Junior Class Sponsored the first Prom for PHS since 1973. “Best Of My Love, ” was the theme and the best of everyone’s effort went into making it a success. King, Jonathon Repka and Queen, Kim Breunig reigned that night with their court. Miniature King Troy had a little trouble making his entrance, but his little Queen, Stacy, came to his rescue. The air was filled with the music of “Mill Street Founda- tion.” Spring was the time of the year, and the white picket fences and flowers added a certain glow to the evening. No one could have asked for a more pleasant spring evening, and it will long be remembered. 49 THE STUDENT CONNECTION-1 BACK ROW: R. Woodward, G. Gunderson, T. Delfosse, C. Gorman, C. F. Cook, A. FRONT ROW: The Student Council is the decision-making force of the student body. It is headed by the pres- ident, who runs the meetings and appoints commit- tees. The vice-president, secretary, and treasurer have their respective duties. The student body rep- resentative and the home room representatives have the job of making the decisions democratic. The student body representative brings the school board and the administration closer to the student body. The homeroom representatives not only have the responsibliity to present the ideas and opinions of their homerooms to the student coun- cil, but also have direct clout, through understand- ing, to the homeroom teacher. The council hopes that in the future students will enjoy learning and understand the running of the school. We hope this is kept in mind. All indi- viduals, teachers and students, have much to teach and much to learn. 50 THE STUDENT CONNECTION-II BACK ROW: F. Cook, E. Knuteson, M. Shumate, M. Walters, R. SENT: D. Cibulka, J. SPIRIT ROUSERS The enthusiasm of the Pep Club members was very much exihibited as soon as the school year started. We elected Mary Schmidt and Corina Radewan as our fall sports’ mascots. Later in the year, Sue Holl and Tammy Knoke were chosen as mas- cots for the winter sports. Throughout the year, we backed our athletes by selling “Poynette Indian” buttons and drawing many posters. School spirit and support of fellow students in their activities will nev- er die as long as there is a pep club at PHS. FFA helped prepare for Homecoming by preparing the bonfire, and by sponsoring the “Challenging Chicken Chase.” The Girls’ JV Volleyball won the Chase, and the FFA float won third in competion at the parade. As Christmas drew near, the FFA had its annual fruit sale- over 600 cases were distributed this year. Community Service was emphasized the second semester— the Owl’s nest received place mats, and thank-you notes were dispersed to many supporters of FFA. The FFA breakfast was also successful-37 hungry teach- ers came to enjoy the food prepared by chapter members. Skills were not limited to Agriculture—there were movie stars in the group Dawn Lake and Alan Kaltenberg appeared on the regular noon Farm Hour to promote FFA. Broadcasts from Poynette’s WIBU were also sent out. Members wrote articles recalling the chapters achievements, and sold ads which were printed in the Poynette Press. The Poynette FFA sponsored a tractor operator’s contest for FFA chapters and held a hog roast at noon. The annual banquet climaxed a busy and eventful year. Awards were presented at the banquet to recognize individu- al achievements. Credit and appreciation is given to Mr. Koepp for his out- standing work as an adviser. 61 FT A Radio Broadcast for WIBU BACK ROW: Mrs. Webster, Adviser, S. Larson, B. Hill, T. Michaels, N. SHUTTERBUGS This year’s photo club has proved to be even more success- ful than it has been in the past. Sporting a fledgling squad, the club gave its members valu- able learning experience in preparing the pictures that went into the making of this annual. The older club members pro- vided the younger and more inexperienced photobugs with incentive and direction along with their experienced adviser, Mr. Dann. Dedicated members, such as senior Adam Gordon, have done much to serve this annual. Surely every dedicated shut- terbug cannot help but benefit from the practical experience and knowledge provided by the PHS Photoclub. The going was rough but we managed to rise to the challenge. Because of the teams’ high spirits and determination, the season was a success. The returning letterwinners helped to make this an interesting season. 95 PIN TO WIN The wrestling team marched through the season coming out second at the conference wrestling match at Cambria. Jerry Hollendyke, Roy Reek, and Brian Lehr emerged as Con- ference champs, while Gordon Blackburn, Randy Megow, Roger Onstad, Brian Hoyheim, and Lowell Johnson nailed down the runners-up spot. Jerry Hollendyke led the team in pins and Roy Reek led the team in takedowns. The team had an 8-3 regular season record and also placed high in several tournaments. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Girls’ Varsity Basketball team enjoyed its most suc- cessful season ever this year. The team was comprised main- ly of sophomores and juniors, but that didn’t stop it from going far. Each girl contributed a great deal to make this a very re- warding season for everyone. Coach LaFave can look for- ward to another bright season next year. Sara Hilgenberg was the new Junior Varsity coach this year, and she developed the girls into a team to be proud of. Though they started off slowly, they improved steadily as the year progressed. The girls worked hard, and their efforts paid off. BACK ROW: D. Shumate, L. Stencel, L. Roesch. SECOND ROW: S. As the season came to a close, the boys traveled north for the Wausau Invitational Bonspiel. The trip was a success as they won all three games played and won the first event tro- phy. The JVs had a fine season as they won four out of six con- ference games and wound up second in the conference. In spite of the fact the girls prac- ticed at 6:30 four mornings out of the week, they all showed much enthusiasm and improvement as the season progressed. The Varsity Team, with the experience of returning Amy Qualle and Suzie Wade, did very well. They finished second in the conference with a final record of 4-2. For the third consecutive year, the Varsity girls traveled to Wausau for the Invitational Bonspiel, won all three of the games, and returned home with the first event trophy. The Varsity team, also, participated in the sectional play- offs in Madison. The JV team completed the season with a 5-1 record and placed first in the conference. TEAM 1-BACK ROW: Skip, M. Behind the consis- tant pitching of Jerry Kutzke and Jon Repka the team slugged its way to being a powerhouse contender in the conference. Under the able coaching of Mr. Ritter, the small, but enthu- siastic crew, had a fine season indeed. s The J.V. Baseball team is the refining and proving ground for the young players who will soon move to the Varsity squad. Under Mr. Mason the inexperienced individuals gained knowledge and experience in the fundamentals of the game as well as team unity. The season held many bright spots and exciting games.
