THE SENIOR CLASS PRESENTS 1977 PAUQUETTE POYNETTE HIGH SCHOOL POYNETTE, WISCONSIN HB fell VOLUME xxxm WE DEDICATE OUR ANNUAL TO MRS. PETERSON I We give to you, Mrs. Peterson, the 1976-77 Pauquette in appreciation for your many years of hard work and dedi- cation. Without your guidance and under- standing as annual advisor many an an- nual might not have gotten finished on time. The students of PHS have also bene- fited greatly from your knowledge, pa- tience and friendship as a teacher. As a reminder for all your help, we the Senior Gass of Poynette Senior High School dedicate this annual to you. 3 To you, Mrs. Calkins, we want to say “thank you” for sharing 20 years of your life with Poynette High School and for sharing it with us. You have given us guidance, wisdom and most of all your friendship. Your leadership in Student Council, coaching ability in curling, and patience spent in teach- ing will never be forgotten. And though we may not have always shown it, our gratitude and appre- ciation for you is never ending. We give to you, Marsha Hanson, a very special “thank you” for your many years of hard work in the office and for your support of school activities. We may not have always said thank you then, so we would like to take the time now. “Thankyou”, Marsha Hanson. 4 To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. -Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 A time to play ..... Hard at Work The most important part of any school is its board. The job of the board is to gov- ern over all the actions of the school. This year’s board worked diligently to make education in the Poynette area as good as it can be, with the main emphasis of the studying of the building needs, and the possible purchase of land for future expansion of the school district. The board has always acted with the interest of the students in mind, and this year was no exception with constant board-student relation through the stu- dent representative. 8 To The Class of ’77 The final year in your initial for- mal education experience has con- cluded. This represents an invest- ment of thirteen years of time and effort that you expended somewhat equivalent to what abilities you pos- sess? Did you attain some of the goals which you established for yourself? Were these thirteen years characterized by frustration, failure and wasted time? These are some important ques- tions which you should ponder at this time, because the answers could give you some indications of what your next step in life should be. I have enjoyed my four years with you. I would like to congratu- late you on your graduation; and wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. Richard Hanick Principal Our Administrators To The Class of ’77 The moment of truth is here— the opportunity to prove that you have acquired the skills and knowl- edge that are necessary to assume the role of responsible adulthood. The diploma merely says that you are certified-what you do with your skills and training will deter- mine whether you are qualified. Good luck in higher education, tech- nical vocational training, or in the world of work! I have tried very hard to learn the English language, and 1 can now read and write a little bit. I would really like to say “thank-you” to all my teachers, but especially to Miss Mercer for helping me when 1 could not under- stand anything. My first impression of Poynette was very good. I did like very much to attend this school and to attend activi- ties such as Homecoming, sports, con- certs, etc. I love this town and the community. I do not have the right words to say how I feel about the school. Sometimes when I feel bad, thinking about my country, the stu- dents make me feel comfortable and help me to forget my feelings of home- sickness. My home is in Rio. 1 live with the Byron Walters family. 1 have two brothers, David and Curt, and one sis- ter, Katy. But in Paraguay, 1 am an only child. My mother’s name (in Par- aquay) is Rosa de Jimenez and my father is named Celestino Jimenez. My father is a barber, and my mother is a beautician. 1 am a beautician, too. We work all the same place-home. We all have to work very hard for the money we need to live by. We live 93 kilometers from the cap- ital of Asuncion. It takes three hours on the bus to get from my town of Caraguatay. The government in my country is Military Government. The people elect the General (the Presi- dent). Our current President, General Alfredo Stroessner, has been in office for almost ten years. We celebrate the anniversary of our independence on August 15. My school in Paraguay is very differ- ent from here. We begin school in March and end in November. We have three sections of attendance—morning, afternoon, and evening. I go to school from 12:30-5:00 P.M., Monday through Friday. Saturday, in the morning, 1 go for physical education class. My other classes are chemistry, physics, psychol- ogy, philosophy, history, English, Lat- in, astronomy, anatomy, biology, and music. We attend six years of primary school and six years of secondary school Also, we do not have free time bet- ween classes. I love sports, and my hobby is swim- ming. I really like track, too. 1 would like to thank Poynette for giving me the opportunity to participate in, and watch different sports. I saw for the first time in America a football game. Our “football” is called soccer in America. Also, we do not have cheer- leaders, only for parades. The cold weather here is very dif- ferent from the weather in Paraguay. Our winter is the same as autumn I had not seen snow before, and I like it very much. 1 tried ice skating with my sister, but Katy had hard work teaching me. It didn’t work. Poynette is a friendly place, and it has taught me very much for all my life. I have traveled in other countries in South America, but always as a vaca- tion. But this time has been the best experience of all my travels. Thank you Poynette High School for helping me develop my education, and thank-you AFS for giving me an opportunity to come to the United States. With love, A jj s) I Q Ja. t■'ca.' i $ . FRONT ROW: Running Wild; Running Free The 1976 Cross Country season was an excellent year, with a very balanced team, several standout Freshmen and Sophomores; the majority coming from the Junior class. The Indians suf- fered defeats at the hands of power- house teams, several of which were ranked in the state. The team should prove to be a conference contender in the coming years, as most of the team is returning. Fine team fellowship, combined with many strenuous miles in practice aided in making the season a rewarding experience for everyone involved. In Cross Country, the runner’s toughest opponent is not the one he is running against, but the one he is running with; himself. ---Stuart Jamieson 1976 STATISTICS Poynette VS. We started practice a few weeks before school with a very big turn out of young Freshmen. Because of space problems, Varsity practiced in the morning; JV after school. Our coaches were: Mrs. Richter, Varsity; Miss Hilgenberg, Junior Varsity. Something new was added this year -our “Hammer of the Match” award which was given to a Varsity player after each match for outstanding play. At the end of the season, Rena Herman was named Most Valuable and Denise Waugh, Most Improved. Like every other season, we all wished that we could have reached a higher goal, but we volleyball players are all very happy with what new skills, experience, and memories we have. 55 TEAM PICTURE: BACK ROW: M. Basketball Varsity This year’s Varsity Basketball Team was composed of eight juniors and three seniors. The juniors on this year’s team gained a great deal of experience for next season. The seniors, even though there were only three of them, each made a contribution to this year’s team. Some of the se- niors provided a great deal of leadership. These people work- ed very hard and always displayed an excellent attitude. With the experience gained by the juniors and some help from this year’s Junior Varsity, the future looks good for the Poynette Indians in basketball. If the returning players are willing to work hard and make the necessary sacrifices, Poynette could definitely finish near the top of the Confer- ence next season. 56 BACK ROW: G. Jeschkc, J. Coach Dave Hamshire felt the boys did a good job and work- ed hard to improve the necessary skills. This year’s team was made up of 5 sophomores and 4 freshmen. Since most Junior Varsity teams are mainly all sophomores and juniors, the young Poynette team performed quite well. Leading the J.V.’s was John Midthun with 233 points and Gaylord Nelson with 180 points. 58 BACK ROW: C. Robson, A. Kaltenberg, C. Brocket, G. Johnson, R. Yonkee. M. Garske, L. Parker. SECOND ROW: R. Halvorsen 64 OUR COACH (His best side) The wrestling squad continued to show improvement this season, compiling a dual meet record of 5 wins and 8 losses, and many more bright moments under coach Larry Thurston. The team started the season by placing second at the Wautoma Invitational. Later they traveled to the Marshall Invitational where they also placed second out of eight teams. At the conference tournament the team placed a re- spectable sixth, having 2 seconds, and 2 thirds individually. Also, this season, Jody Halvorsen became the first Indian wrestler to advance to the State Tournament. w C S R H u E E p S E E T R R L L B I E N A S G D u E p R R S T B Pam Hoyheim Tamra Thurston Jan Waugh Patti Bublitz 66 Mixed Curlers Have Fun And Success The ’77 Mixed Curling teams had a very excell- ent season. Each team tried to prove that it was better than the others; and it surprised many people. The teams enjoyed each others company as they curled, and they, also, learned a great deal. c a 1 1 i n S t h e T u r n s This year’s Varsity curling team was composed of Tom Schoeneberg, Larry Kaschinske, Randy Branton, and Mitch Ohnesorge. Being a young, com- pletely new team, it took time to “put things together.” After losing their first two conference games by close scores, they went on to finish tied for second place. The Varsity, again went to Wausau to the Invitational Bonspiel and came home with third place in the second event. Larry Kaschinske and Mitch Ohnes- orge will return next year and with help from some of this year’s JV curl- ers, the future looks bright. VARSITY: Second, A. Quallc; Coach, Miss Walker; Lead, K. Gorman; Third, B. Ohnc- sorge; Skip, C. Luessman. For the third consecutive year, the girls got to compete in a lettered sport in a conference consisting of: Lodi, Pardeeville, Portage, and Poynette. Sixteen girls practiced after school and from this, the Varsity and J.V. teams were selected. The J.V. finished in third place. The Varsity ended with a 2-4 season. The Varsity team, again, traveled to Wausau for the Invitational Bonspiel, and again came home with the first event trophy. The Varsity, also, went into competiton on the State level after winning the sectionals held in Lodi. This year proved to be a very successful year for the girl curlers, and we’re sure they will be just as successful next year. Curling at Its Best 1 JV: Skip, S. Wade; Third, C. Teeter; Second, D. Strangely enough, the Chorus found that 85 people can fit into two Holiday Inn rooms! Still in the Christmas Spirit, the Chorus performed a Christmas Con- cert at the high school the next week, with the program ending with everyone singing the “Hallelujah Mass.” The year ended with a superb Spring Concert, and the last encore came for the Seniors at graduation. The Student Council, also, had continuous relations with the School Board. As in the past few years, we had a Student Representative to work for the interest of the students with the Board of Education. 103 The Varsity Club, with the new adviser, Mr. Tomlinson, un- dertook several money-raising projects this year. The Club pro- moted school spirit by raffling off the “Homecoming'’ game ball. Gary Tomczak This small but enthusiastic, hardworking group of students is dedicated to taking and develop- ing the hundreds of pictures that go into making this annual. This year’s annual staff found out quickly and set out to make a perfect annual. The staff this year, although small, was very hard working and dedicated. Giving up their Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings they proved that their hard work was worth what they got, a “perfect an- nual.” We offer a special thanks to our pho- tographers Gary and Adam for the many hours they spent in the darkroom. We would also like to thank Mrs. Peterson for the time and energy she gave to the annual. We hope this annual will help you re- member the 1976-77 school year as a year impossible to forget. no in BACK ROW: G. Linderwcll, C. Richter. THIRD ROW: S. Spaeth, J. Richter, L. Roesch. This group of students is very instrumental in the operation of the library under the expert direction of the Head Librarian, Mrs. Hilgendorf. These students are able to check out, and classify books, as well as assisting stu- dents in finding and using the various resource materials in the Central Library. Bookworms A new aide in the library this year is Mrs. Manke. She is an assistant to Mrs. Hilgendorf, and Mrs. Schereck. Her job is to process all books, maga- zines, and A.V. materials for the entire school district after the materials have been catalogued by Mrs. Hilgendorf and Mrs. Schereck. Mrs. Manke’s kind heart, and good humor has been an excellent addition in the library this year. 02 The main job of the trained Audio-Visual assistants is to aid teachers in the operation of movie and film projectors, and tape, and video recorders. The A.V. frees the teacher from the job of setting up, running, and disassembling the multi-media equipment. This elite group of students has the knowledge and ability to run most of the A.V. systems in the library, and, therefore, are able to take a burden off both the teachers and the library staff. Agriculture’s New Generation r The 1976-1977 Poynette FFA Chapter’s activities began with the Columbia County Fair. The new gates built by the chapter added to the successful showing by the members at the fair. As a chill came into the air, the Chapter felt a need to supply warmth. Therefore, the FFA sponsored the “Chal- lenging Chicken Chase,” and the bonfire. The alumni team won the chicken chase, proving that experience is the essen- tial factor. The bonfire, with the traditional topping plus a boat, was a big success. As winter came and snow appeared, the chapter provided a touch of summer by sponsoring the annual fruit sale. Over 900 cases of fruit were stacked in the shop, with about 50 hardworking fruit sorters packing. After the fruit sale, the time was devoted to developing the Chapter’s basketball skills, as the FFA played several games. With the warm air of spring, the FFA staged the annual FFA week, by preparing the breakfast for the teachers. The FFA members arrived at school nearly two hours early to pre pare the breakfast. No complaints were received, as the mem bers had taken special care to prepare the farm products in a tasty manner. The FFA banquet signaled the end of the year as the Chap- ter’s acheivements were recognized. With all activities behind us, the Chapter enthusiastically looked ahead to next year. us Creed Speaker Homecoming Bonfire FFA Calendars Junior Livestock Judging Team Annual FFA Week-Teachers Breakfast BACK ROW: D. A Bit of This year the AFS Club welcomed its student from Paraguay, Blanca Gimenez. Blanca had not seen snow before this year, so a winter sledding party was planned by the club, with a picnic lunch at the Priske’s. The AFS Club sold candy again this year, with part of the money to be set aside for a Poynette High School stu- dent to be sent to a different country for a summer. The money from the candy machine also contributed to AFS funds. It was a successful year. The club had a good time helping our student, and learning from her. Our advisor was Mrs. Prescott. To help celebrate the Christmas holiday, several members of the club went caroling around Poy- nette, and afterwards treated the seventh and eighth grade Spanish classes to cookies and hot chocolate. Other activities included a visit to Columbia County Nursing Home, and, of course, the annual end-of-the-year “fiesta.” The journey to Mexico was postponed until next year, due to the instability of Mexican politics and economics. s iHASTA EL ANO PROXIMO! Defenders of the Environment The Coservation Club was one of the newest and most active clubs in school this year. The main goal is to learn about the principles of ecology, and to promote the wise use of our re- sources through public service projects. The service projects this year included a year-long recycling campaign, making and distributing bird houses and feed- ers, and heading the National Wildlife week observances in March. This club is open to all students in- terested in a career in environmental studies, or just interested in helping out with service projects for the bene- fit of the environment. The club intends to remain in ac- tive service in the years to come for a better environment. Officers: Standing: Advisor, Mr. Laib, Vice Pres.-T. Breneman, Treas.-K. Fiske. Kneel- ing: Scc.-F. The club also purchased several books about skiing to be placed in the library. Devils’ Head was able to provide the Ski Club with free lessons, and slopes to satisfy all levels of Alpine Skiing. The Ski Club will continue to be an organization in which alpine ski- ers of all abilities can develop their skills.
