THE SENIOR CLASS PRESENTS PAUQUETTE 75 Mrs. Von Haden, in you we have found that: A teal friend is one who helps us to think our noblest thoughts, put forth our best efforts, and to be our best selves. Therefore, we the Senior Class of 1975, dedicate this annual to you for all of the wisdom and under- standing you have given to us. And though we may not have always shown it, our gratitude and appreciation for you is never ending. To learn and never be filled, is wisdom; To teach and never be weary is love.: 2 15 A TIME TO . . . RELATE ............7 DECIDE Although our futures divide us, We will never be apart. For we will be friends until the end And have been from the start. The fun we’ve had Will never die. Like the time we skipped that boring class And told that little white lie. Always remember us as friends And don’t ever think we’re not. For we will always hold onto what we have, And make the best of what we’ve got. So as we shed a tear and say goodbye, Never forget what we’ve shared. But remember, isn’t it nice to know That someone has always cared? We’ve had our ups and downs and inbetweens, But what we are trying to say Is that we think of you so often Each hour, each minute, each day. Rhonda Noble STANDING: Russell Graef, Student Representative; Jeffrey SEATED: Daniel VanEtten, Marian Hilgenberg, Joan Schei- Smith, Robert Mountford, William Bender, Mr. Noble, der, LeRoy Breneman. Administrator. THEY INSTITUTE NEW PROGRAMS Many of the new programs instituted by the school board have worked amazingly well. Modular scheduling and open campus, to name a few. This year the board adopted another new program. By shar- ing expenses with participating schools in the area, our future seniors will have a better chance of gain- ing practical vocational education. We hope that the board's foresight remains so that it can continue to make educationally sound de- cisions. Arlene Steffenhagen Financial Secretary Marcia Hanson Secretary Carol Schliesman Secretary -1 Donna Childs Teachers' Aide 8 Dear Senior: You are approaching the conclusion of a very important part of your life--that of your formal K-12 education. Symbolic with the successful completion of this process you will receive a diploma, which in appearance is the same for every graduate. Despite exact similarity, it will not guarantee to each of the recipients the same results in the future pursuit for success and happiness. The diploma is only a general indicator of achievement. More specific traits such as knowledge, skills, maturity and personality become the determining criteria for job placement, job promotion, salary increases and college acceptance. Perhaps this short verse summarizes my message to you: You have been given a bag of tools, a formless rock and book of rules: and each must make, ere life has flown, a stumbling block or a stepping stone. Are you prepared for a stepping stone approach to your life? I sincerely hope so. If you foresee the stumbling block alternative for yourself, you are still young enough to do something to change this. Congratulations and Best Wishes to you always. OUR ADMINISTRATORS TO THE CLASS OF '75: The leadership that your class has given the Student Body has been exceptionally good this year, and your entire class should be commended for it. As the Senior Class goes, so goes the entire school. I hope that each of you will continue your contributions in your adult life as you have as a student at P.H.S. Happi- ness of having Mr. and Mrs. Herman Manke, Jr. as my American parents. Sue for my sister, and Dan and Paul as my brothers. Happiness for living in Poynette community where I have been receiving all the American hospitality, understanding, kindness and love. My family in Brazil are Maria de Lourdes e Joquim, my parents; my sister Sandra; and my brothers Sergio, Ferande e Marcos, and also Brasilia e Olofemes who are my grandparents. It has been very different to live here from my city in Brazil. I live in Curitiba, a city of 600 thousand people, which is the capital of my state, Parana. This is the Southern part of the country and the coldest one. I had never seen snow before I came here and the lowest temperature we have is about 22°F. I graduated from high school in my country and I am attending the University of Parana. There I am taking a Civil Engineering Course which is five years. In Brazil, we can start our education at the age of three or four. We have a nine-year junior school and three year high school. We have three periods of classes: in the morning (7:30-- 12:30) in the afternoon (1:00--5:30), and at night from 7:00 until 10:30 or 11:00 p.m. The night hours are just for high school students. In our schools, we have usually nine to twelve subjects each year and we just choose a voca- tion course, but not the subjects which are part of the courses. We have five classes per day and we have to attend 75P]0 of the time. We go to school six days per week and on Saturday all the classes are generally in the morning and about three hours long. We usually spend our free time and weekends in community clubs where we can practice any sport, dancing, or attend artistic shows, etc. We also go to the theatre and to the movies very often. Portuguese is the native tongue for Brazilians. In Brazil the Independence was proclaimed on September 7, 1822, and our Republic was found on November, 1889. Since that, our political system is the Republic. We are a very youthful country and we are in absolute development. The Brazilian people are very sentimental people and there are many families considered preserved and its family system is patriarchal. I love sports and 1 am very happy because Poynette has been offering me many athletic opportunities. I played volleyball for the varsity team and now I'm curling and swimming with synchronized swimming. The friendship between teachers and school employees and students is something I cannot avoid to talk about. It's a very special, important factor in the student's life and this certainly will have a great influence (a good in- fluence) in the life of the students after high school. The teaching staff as well as the student body of Poynette High School is a wonderful example of the friend- ly, intelligent, and sincere people of America. I really think 1 love this school. Something I feel when I am singing with the cheerleaders, when we are singing the Poynette song, or simply when I am in the middle of one of my classes and I start to look at the things and I can see through that window these are not the trees I can see in Brazil; I see that my classmates are different people, sitting on different chairs in a different kind of room; I see a teacher who dresses, acts, and thinks differently from my former teachers. When I see those things. 1 realize that those are American trees, my classmates are Americans, and the teachers are Americans. These kinds of things I feel. Things you can feel anywhere, anytime, a nd for any reason, you know? Things you feel when you love . . . Love your life and everything in your world. Thank you Poynette High School and AFS for making my stay possible in America. $ CU £x ixaxoil ft-yStUO 33 Vera Lucia Pinheiro I can't catch it. Dog chow tastes so yummy! We were represented on the Homecoming Court by Susan Brisky and Gordon Gunderson. Mr. Dann's homeroom won first prize for its window display. We’ll Blast Them Off The Field. Honorable mention went to the Freshmen Class for its float, Poynette Will Whip Wisconsin Heights. Our Freshmen Class proves to grow stronger academi- cally as well as in sports; for example, the Cross Country harriers were comprised mostly of freshmen this year. On thw windows of the businessess were the imagina - tive paintings done by each homeroom. On Thursday even- ing the Pep Rally was held in the Elementary Gymnasium. Following this was the flaming bonfire that aroused every- one's spirit. Friday, September 27, was the big day. At 2 p.m. the parade held a lively procession through town. Leading the parade were the mascots riding their horses and our Chief’ driving the Gremlin. While the band played on, the floats moved along. Last, but not least, were the Senior girls in the '57 Chevy. The football team put up a tough fight against the powerful Wisconsin Heights team, but lost 33-7. 42 44 “STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN” Our senior representative on the court, Tom Scheider, was injured during the football game, and was unable to be on the court. That left the seniors without representation; however, faithful Dick Onstad volunteered to help out. And why not? What an opportunity! What a pretty partner! With the combined efforts of each council member, things seemed to run pretty smoothly this year. The council does many things, such as: putting on youth centers, running concession stands, and trying to represent the student body to the best of its ability. The council is, also, represented on the School Board by an elected member, Russ Graef, who tries to re- present the council and express its ideas. Though the coun- cil organizes and sponsors activities, it takes the full co- operation of the individual students to pull things together and make P.H.S. a school of which we will be proud, Mrs. Calkins, adviser, helped guide us in making decisions concerning Homecoming and Winter Vacation procedures. The officers were: President, Jim Dann; Vice-Presi- dent, Todd Case: Secretary, Rhonda Noble; Treasurer, 1st semester. Darby Johnson; .2nd semester, Cheryl Collins. 49 50 BACK ROW: P. Buzzell, D. ' If Room 108 could talk, you would be able to hear what actually went on during those Wednesday and Satur- day mornings and afternoons we spent working on this an- nual outside of school. It could tell of the many long hours we put in to bring the 1975 Pauquette to each and every one of you. Editors, Cathy Sopha, Greg Noble, and Penny Buz- zell, and photographer, Bob Wilson, along with our advi- ser, Mrs. Peterson, attended an annual workshop at Mount Horeb in the fall of 1973. Most of us, unfamiliar with the task we were about to attempt, now had some background of how to put our annual together. It gave us many helpful hints and new ideas to show the 1974-75 school year as the very individual and prominent year it was. It was the beginning of some new additions and further growth to Poynette’s activities. Working with fellow classmates on the production of our annual was a very rewarding experience. We related to and got to know each other as hard-working and dedicated young adults, all working together to produce the best annual ever, die 1975 Pauquette. Somehow through the writing of articles, finding the right pictures, and the humor which somehow got us through. Because it is mainly the Senior's creation, it means a great deal to us. We would like to express a sincere Thank you to Mrs. Peterson, our adviser, who spent much of her personal time double checking our mats to ensure us of a great” annual. A special thanks to our dedicated photographers, Kevin Nelson and Bob Wilson for taking and developing all those pictures, especially the last minute ones. Also a big thanks to Mr. Dann for helping with the photography. We would, also, like to thank all those persons who helped us in any way and co- operated with us in putting together this great year in Pauquette 75--The Editors, Cathy and Greg C. Collins, S. Although it is, perhaps, one of the smallest clubs in P.H.S., it is always one of the busiest. Its duties consist of taking pictures of school events, sports and many other activities. The local newspapers depend on the Photo Club for many pictures. It would be difficult, if not impossible, to publish the Pauquett without the aid of the Photo Club. Mr. Dann has been the adviser for many years--since it started--and has helped many times when trouble or problems came up. We hope to see more people become involved in Photo Club in the furute. Meanwhile, we continue to capture P.H.S. on camera. CHEESE!!! LEFI IO RICH I: D. Gabbei, M. Guff, D. Tompkins, S. Rohvetz, N. Smith, R. Price, D. Kuhlman, D, Rhiner. THE LIBRARY Dawn Ohnesorge, Mrs. Hilgendorf, librarian. C. Herschleb, D. Dunn, L. Hahn. BACKBONE OF THE SCHOOL Filing, stamping, and sorting--a librarian's work is never done. Our librarian, Mrs. Hilgendorf, knows this for a fact. There are many jobs a student can do in the library. If you are artistic, you can work on exhibits for the show case, or little things to brighten up the library. If you like working with fellow classmates, you can check out books or assist them in finding a book. There is something for you to do anytime of the day. During, homeroom, you can be sunshine to brighten the morning's opening. At the end of the day you can help with the rush for overnight materials. The library is the backbone of our school. It is the center of the tools that run a good education. During the last few years our library has expanded with learning tools. Microfilm readers, filmloop and film- strip projectors, opaque machines, and the overhead mach- ines all aid in learning and in teaching. Another important tool is the program controls for listening centers. This is why you will see students with earphones sitting in the library and in the bookkeeping room. The center is tapes or records played in the library and transmitted into control centers. The records or tapes are used for chorus, English, and bookkeeping, and are available tn other subjects. Soon students will be able to view recorded T. V. programs. Poynette High School is helping students to learn. As long as teachers teach and students attempt to learn, the library will be as active as it is now and as it always has been in Poynette High School. 55 BACK ROW: L. Gerhke, A. Qualle, J. Colvin, M. Besides the tutoring and student aide programs, two new programs were introduced; Career Nights and Audio-visual aides. During Career Nights, people of different professions spoke to the students, giving an insight of their work. Students in the Audio-visual aide program learned how to operate the A.V. equipment and then they assisted the teachers when the equipment was used. LEFT TO RIGHT: M. Briede, J. Hall, J. Gorman, P. OUR STUDENT FROM BRAZIL On August 23 Poynette High School students and the faculty gave Vera Pinheiro a warm and lasting welcome. Vera is our AFS student from Curitiba Brazil--where they never have snow, so our first snow fall was a new experienc for her. The AFS Club sponsored a roller skating party in September. Many high school students and faculty members attended the party. Mrs. Prescott, the advisor, Mr. Witt- mus, who found it difficult to skate under the pole, and others. This was a good way to introduce Vera to one of our school activieies and to help her get acquainted with the students in an informal situation. She enjoyed rolling skating, as she did all of our other sports. Vera was our tenth AFS student and contributed a great deal to enrich the lives of the students of P. H. S. and the community. Officers of the AFS Club this year were: Pres., Cathy Sopha, V. Pres., Sue Manke, Treasurer, Penny Buzzell; Secretary, Beth Erstad; and Liaison --Becky Rhiner. The 1974-75 FHA got off to an early start. Activities began during the summer with an officers' convention in Green Lake. Members who attended the convention brought back many new ideas for the members of the Club. An initiation party was given for the new members in the fall. During the football season, the girls worked at the refreshment stand at the home games. We sold oil burning candles for a Christmas project. We, also, made doughnuts and cookies and sold them to the students in the Commons. Our Homecoming Float-- We'll Hatch a Victory turned out to be a success. It was the result of working together. At the Fall Rally in Fall River, our members had the opportunity to meet FHA members from die surrounding schools. All of the students en- joyed a scavenger hunt, with the Poynette girls finding the most items. We, also, listened to a guest speaker, and the FHA Hero—Tyrome Thomp- son. In May, the Mother-Daughter Banquet featured a fashion show, dur- ing which the members modeled clothes which diey had made during the year. New officers were, also, installed at the banquet. Thus ended a good year at PHS. 78 A LITTLE BIT OF ME STANDING: L. Hahn, Reporter; P. Morse, Par liamentarian; C. Michaels, Historian; Mrs. Webster, Adviser; SEATED: J. Volden, Trea- surer; D. RUN FOR FUN With 3 runners returning from last year's team, this year's team was helped out by several promising freshmen. The course was lengthened from to 3 miles. To prepare for the increased distance, the team’s training consisted of L.S.D. (Long, slow distances). Mile- age was kept and at the end of the season it added up to 2500 miles for the team as a whole. The team finished 5th out of 7 schools at the conference meet. R. Graef, D. Smith, K. Gartman, and S. Burgess were letter winners, with Smith winning Most Improved Run- ner. Dan Smith finished 18th at conference and 11th at regionals. Russ Graef was elected Most Valuable Runner. Poynette's Varsity Program under- went a change this season, the chang- ing of head coaches. Coach Larry Thurston has completely changed the program. He has put pride and self- respect back into the Poynette Ind- ians. The team appreciated him very much and hopes he will remain here for a long time. It comes from earlier programs of learning the ba- sics of football. One of these pro- grams is Junior Varsity Football. The boys in J. V. Football learn to put to use the mistakes of the previous Var- sity game and prepare for the next. There is no glory in a J. V. game, but there is self-satisfaction. This year's team compiled a very respec- table 6-1 record. The rules state that you are not allowed to play your varsity position on J. V. This means you have to be versatile enough to make a position change. This year's team made the switch with great ease. They proved this by the excellent record. If the J.V. team continues its winning ways the Varsity Team has nowhere to go but to the TOP! BACK ROW: Coach Garske, L. Kaschinske, R. Reek, J. Repka, R. Gabbei, R. Weekly, T. Palmer, M. FRESHMEN-EIGHTH GRADE FOOTBALL The combined forces of the eighth and ninth grade football team provided the Poynette Football Program with a per- fect 5-0 season. This was the first time in many years that a freshman team has gone through a season with an unblemished record. The team learned basic football fundamentals which they put to excellent use. Fancy plays were not needed but de- termination and hard work were the techniques the team used to win. As Mr. Garske said of his team, There was no high point or no low point, we just played on an even keel with no individualism, just teamwork! HAMSHIRE’S FRESHMEN STANDING: Coach Hamshire, J. But, as it turned out, it wasn't quite so successful as we had hoped. Record: 0-10-2. In spite of that, the team never gave up, but tilings just didn't click for them. The lack of man power hurt the team more than anything. Freshmen on this year's squad were: Brian Lehr, Roy Reek, Jerry Hollendyke, and Rick Stine. GIRLS' BUCKETS This year the Poynette Girls' Basketball Team, coached by Mrs. LaFave, had an exciting sea- son in spite of its win-loss record. After a long year of diligent work by both the swimmers and the coaches, the show, given March 20-21, was a big success. Pat Hebei gave a graceful performance as the Senior Soloist, and for the first time a mixed duet was performed by Debbie Hilgendorf and Todd Case. Our group keeps growing bigger and stronger with participants from both the high school and the middle school showing more interest. THE SWINGERS LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Dann, Coach; Tom Dushek, Kirk Hansen, Doug Peterson, Jim Dann, Tom Schoene berg, Kevin Nelson. The golf team was made up of two members of last year's team and of four new members. Two seniors, Jim Dann and Kevin Nelson, were also on the team. The team practiced several weeks in the gym before the grounds were ready so they could practice outside. Each year the team's scores im- prove and each year proves to be a good year, not only in wins, but val- uable in the learning of a sport that is fast becoming one of the most ex- citing games of the nation. It is also becoming a game that rates high in financial success. 104 Mission Control Maybelline Eyes The Longest Yard Our Chief THE DIAMOND NINE BACK ROW: D. Corning, S. Leaf, B. Tomlinson, J. Under the excellent coaching of head coach Karen Brooks and Assistant Coach Paul Tilleman, and hard work and dedication from the girls, we had a very successful season. There were many returning letter-winners from the senior, junior and sophomore classes plus many promising freshman girls. It was a very rewarding season and a great opportun- ity for the senior girls to finish out their high school track career. in THE BETTER THEY LOOK Stillness conquers the halls, As departure from this phase, of life closes in the walls.
