THE SENIOR CLASS OF POYNETTE HIGH SCHOOL PRESENTS THE NINETEEN SEVENTY-FOUR PAUQUETTE VOLUME XXX WE DEDICATE our annual to MR. NICHOLSON We give to you, Mr. Nicholson, the 1973-74 Pauqu- ette in gratitude for your many years of hard work and de- dication making you an asset to the teaching profession and Poynette High School. For your guidance and understanding as a teacher, many students have benefited by your knowledge, patience, and kindness. As a reminder to all for your help, we the Senior Class of the Poynette Senior High School dedicate this annual to you. 3 “I shall pass through this world but once. • Let me not defer it or neglect it, %J remomBer administration TO: CLASS OF '74 The diploma that you will receive shortly has of- ten been depicted as a passport to adulthood. I be- lieve that all of you have been given an opportunity for an excellent elementary and secondary educational program. Some of you have benefited greatly from that educational program, while some of you have hidden behind the skirts of it’s not relevant, let me do my own thing, or some similar excuse. I hope that each of you will accept the responsi- blities of adulthood along with the rights!!!! Sincerely, 7)iu. 7 Mr. Noble To The Class of 74— Your life will undergo a significant change follow- ing your commencement from Poynette High School. Such things as direct parental control, economic de- pendency, compulsory formal education, high school activities, and many others will evacuate your life with increasing suddenness. That yearning for freedom and independence will now be a reality. The challenges and crises which not only face our society, but also threaten the family unit and individual situations will touch each of you more closely than ever before. It is my wish that your education and experiences here at Poynette High School will enable you to not only make these necessary adjustments successfully, but also to get you involved and active in contributing your fair share of talent, time, and energy toward the bet- terment of your life situation. Congratulations and Best Wishes. We, The Freshmen, burst into PHS this year 103 strong. We brought with us an abundance of curiosity and vitality. Proving to be very creative, we surprised every- one by taking first place with our Homecoming Float, entitled, In Udder Words, We'll Cream 'Em. And That's No Bull. S. it was a little easier to find our way around without a hassle from upperclassmen. This year our homecoming theme for our float was We'll Hang ’Em High. We were also awarded first and third place on our homeroom windows. We were represent- ed at the Homecoming dance by Chris Grinde and Robyn Elsing. We were involved in several activities this past year. Two of our members, Tim Dickerson and Ron Anderson went to state competition in the one act play Breaking of Bread. They received a B rating at State. Six of our boys were involved in football, nine were involved in wrestling and two played on Varsity basketball. STANDING: P. Rasmussen, C. Michael, R. Price, D. I will never forget this year, which passes a lot too fast for me. 1 enjoy this school, although it's very different from school—not everybody goes to high school in Switzerland. Eight years of school are requested, but most of the kids go 9 years or more. First the pupils have 5 years of grade school. Then they attend different types of schools according to their capabilites and plans for jobs. I go to a gymnasium, the school for students that want to go to a university. It’s divided into two sections, math section, and Latin section. Math section lays more stress in math, biology, physics and chemistry, and Latin section on languages. I’m in the Latin section and the subjects I have to take are German, French, English, Latin, History, Geography, Biology, Math, Physics, Chemistry, Phy. Ed., Art (only until the middle of the grade.) English begins in grade 8. Voluntarily, I take Holian. What you call classes here are called grades and divided into groups of about 20 people, while we call classes, and stay together all through the years. The school begins at 7:30 or 8:20 a.m. and ends either at 11:00 or at 11:50. About 4 days a week we have to go in the afternoon, too, from 2:15, till 3:50, or 4:45 or 5:20. Classes last 45 minutes and the breaks in between are from 5 to 15 minutes long. Saturday morning we also go to school. We don't have study halls and eat lunch at home. We can leave the school building as soon as our classes are over and we don't have that many rules anyway. The school year begins in March and the vacations, from 1 weeks to 6 weeks long, are spread out over the year. Here I take mostly classes I couldn't take at my school. I really enloyed choosing whatever I wanted. I special- ly liked the way the teachers are close to the students, like friends. I like the school activities and school sports, es- pecially the games, since for sports we have to join clubs organized by the community. The only activity at our school is Student Council. In Switzerland, I live in Muttenz, 13, 999 inhabitants, which is very close to Basil, one of the biggest cities in the country. It’s at the Rhine River, right at the border to France and Germany. It has a lot of chemical industries around there. The climate is about the same except that it doesn't get so cold in winter. Naturally, there is a lot of snow in the alps where I live about 5 hours away from. My favorite sports are skiing, which I do a lot of in Switzer- land, and also swimming. At home I have an older sister and a younger brother. Here I live with the Manthe family, who made me feel like at my own house right from the beginning and whom I like very much. When I go back (I don't want to think about it yet,) I still have to go to school for another year, and later on I want to go to the University, probably for language studying. I really appreciate how you, the students and the teachers, not to forget the secretaries, help me having a great time and getting to know a different culture, another way of living and America as a country. I hope you got to know a little better about my country, too! Thank you to all of you and to AFS......... Annalies Peter 43 LIVE FULL, SPEAK STANDING: R. Onstad, J. Dann, R. Stoltenberg, M. J. The organizations main aim is to re- present students of PHS and to see that their wishes and ideas are brought to the attention of the Board and the Administration. The Student Council also maintains pop and ice cream machines, puts on youth centers, runs concession stands at basketball games, and gives out scholorships to graduating seniors. Myrtle Peterson, Advisor MIDNIGHT OIL It's finished, it's done, it's here, and now the Annual Editors and Staff presents the 1974 Pauquette to you. As you page through this Annual, you'll find interesting writeups (make sure that you read them), photography giving you a pictorial remembrance of 1974, and fine art work by staff artists Kim Gordon and Sue Lloyd. When starting the Annual in the spring of 1973 the editors set a goal-- more pictures and far less white space area to give the purchaser full bene- fit of his 1974 Annual, and we think you'll find a great step was made in this direction. The staff this year, although small, was extremely hard working and dedicated, making this Annual possible. Special appreciation is given to Bob Wilson, under the direc- tion of Mr. Dann, for a super job on the photography--getting the pictures and spending a great deal of extra time in the dark room. Mrs. Peterson, our Advisor and friend cannot be thanked enough here for her numer- ous, tireless hours spent with the staff patiently teaching and prodding. All in all, our hopes are that with the help of this Annual you truly will remember 1974, a year, impossible to forget. Our gratitude and thanks to every- one for their cooperation. 49 Editor-in-Chief Associate-Editor Assistant-Editor CLICK! CLICK! FLASH! STANDING: B. Rhiner, S. Jamieson, S. Hebei, K. Haupt, M. Jahn, M. Hutchinson, M. Cuff, 52 Have any of you ever wondered what really goes on behind the scenes of our student librarians? Of course, we all realize the 'small' jobs they perform for us, such as checking in and out books, helping a lost student find his way out of the maze of bookshelves and directing him home again with the very book he spent three mods look- ing for, and telling you even if you would rather rest your feet on the chair opposite you, you really should let someone else sit there. Librarians also learn the basic skills of repairing a book, the stylizing of materials and collation, the filing of cards for the card catalog as'well as the regular circulation and shelving of books and mate- rials, with such accuracy that you will probably never know the pains the poor librarian went through so that she might help you. However, there are many benefits that come from being a librarian. Have you ever noticed that most of these eighteen girls and two boys always have their 'library homework' done before you do and always seem to know where all the best books are, especially the new ones that we didn't even know had arrived yet. The reason for this is that they know where everything is and are given the chance to see all new books and materials first hand. This is also true of AV equipment. There are also many extra things a student librarian can learn if he or she is interested. They may be trained to operate audio-visual equipment and can learn the different facets of a library career--not only in school but also in public libraries, medical, law and industrial insti- tutions. For those of you still young at heart, or if you have a younger brother or sister, a new way to branch out from student librarians will be started at the public library. This new branch will be storytelling, which will be held during a limited time for those interested. The PTA Book and County Fair is also another project which librarians will participate in and help to support. Student librarians, as well as any student at P. H. S., are given the chance to submit recommendations for books or any other materials they feel might be made useful in our library. There is also an organization which all student librarians can join; the SLAW. (Student Librarians Associ- ation of Wisconsin). So you see, it might be worth getting to know some of these students and finding out what our library is all about. 53 t Q u E P A S A ? BACK ROW: L. Kaukl, C. Sopha, P. Buzzel, P. Ketchum, E. The three plays, Trifles directed by Mrs. Zahn; Miggles directed by Mr. Frank; and The Breaking of Bread directed by Mr. Harms, all combined to present a very successful performance. After four fine performances, three of which were competitive, our one-act play, The Breaking of Bread was still going strong. With two new, almost inexperienced actors it may have come as quite a surprise to some people; how- ever, PHS was represented at Stevens Point University, Nov. 30, 1973, for the State Drama Contest. Tim Dickerson and Ron Anderson, under the guidance of Mr. Harms, put in many hours of hard work to accomplish this great feat. Since Poynette had not been represented at this contest for twenty years, the entire commuhity was very proud when they came home with a B rating. 58 BACK ROW: L. Kaukl, K. Glasgow, H. Fisk, T. With the signal of a majorette’s whistle and the cadence of the drums, the band stepped off to a march- ing start this year. PHS marching band, boasting 69 members, performed at Homecoming and Parent's Night, and marched in various parades throughout the season. For the first time in the history of PHS, the band was divided into two concert bands. Tihs was done mainly so that students would be able to progress at their own rate of speed, and so that all members could find somewhat of a challenge in their music. This ar- rangement has worked out quite well, and will be used in the years to come. The two bands played together once a cycle; how- ever, they practiced separately three times per cycle. With this type of a set up, each band performed sepa- rately at the concerts, and then joined together to per- form as one. 62 RHYTHM STANDING: J. Alford, J. Schultz, D. Onstad, K. Nel- son, G. A mid-winter concert with the two bands per- forming seperately and then as one, proved to be a fine per- formance for instrumental mu- sic lovers. Their annual Spring Concert, as always, proved to be a complete success. With Solo and Ensemble Contest upon them, students put many extra hours of work, which paid off in the end, sim- ply because PHS received so many high ratings. The anrfual Concert Band Contest followed soon after, and also proved suc- cessful for PHS. All in all, it was a year Band members will never forget. 63 AND THE BEAT B. Rhiner, M. Seaman, A. There are approxi- mately 140 members in this years entire cho- rus, the majority of these being in the Fresh- man-Sophomore chorus. This year this chorus performed one num- ber at the Pop Concert entitled, The Cruel War is Raging. They also performed at the Christmas Concert singing two selections which were, Go Tell It On The Mountain, and I Wonder As I Wander. They also per- formed at the Spring Concert. The other, more experienced chorus con- sists of the Juniors and Seniors. This chorus performed selections from Godspell and Love One Aonther. At the Christmas Con- cert they sang two songs entitled, Did Mary Know and Bom Today Is Christ. At the Spring Concert they performed numerous se- lections that they performed also at contest. The beginnings of these rehearsals were like a riot, as everyone would rush into the room before it became too crowded, but as things calmed down and the rehearsal began, the noise gradually turned into music. At the Christmas Concert the group sang selections from Handel's Messiah and another song, Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones. After a brief intermission they sang some lighter Christmas numbers. Activities began this summer with an Officer’s Convention held in Green Lake. The convention-goers learned about new activities and projects which they shared with their fel- low FHA members. As the school year began, a tea was held for girls in- terested in becoming new FHA members. Officers talked to the girls and told them about FHA. Later on in the year, a freshman initiation party was held, and the new girls be- came FHA members. Our homecoming float— Playing for a Victory —won a second place. Throughout the football season FHA mem- bers worked at the refreshment stand during home games. We also sold ecology stationery made of recycled paper. Both of these activities helped to boost our club's treasury. At a fall rally in Waunakee, our members met with FHA members from surrounding schools. A demonstration on self-defense was presented, and later we split up into small groups and discussed various ways we can help to improve our communities. The Mother-Daughter Banquet featured a Fashion Show in which the members modeled clothes that they had made during the year. Also, the installation of the FHA officers for next year was held. Activities of the year started with the building and preparation of the home- coming bonfire, which gave a warm welcome to all. The twenty-five members were involved in many money making projects and did exceptionally well. Some of these projects were selling fire extinguishers, and light bulbs. The F.H.A.ers also had a great year in the line of a strong basketball team. On Monday nights they would all get together with another school and battle it out for a top winner. Mr. Whittmus and his team usually come out a - head to give the many spectators an evening of enjoyment. The F.F.A. members are to be congratulated on the fine work they have done this year to promote their club. Seeing they have a membership of only twenty-five, they hope to double it in the years to come. 74 DELL Preparing for Homecoming Bonfire FIRE EXTIN- GUISHER SALE: D. Corning, L. Hahn, Top Salesmen. The membership has consid- erably risen since then. For the 1973-74 school year the organization boasts an active membership of forty-five. Officers are: Dennis Saager--President; Debbie Hilgen- d'orf—Vice President; Harold Fisk--Secretary-Treasurer; Debbie Gabbei--Parliamentarian; Ardyce Haupt—Histori- an; Mrs. Hilgendorf--Advisor. Formerly, FTA was open to students interested in ex- ploring teaching as a career. Now, SAE is open to students who are exploring all types of careers. Our organization involves students in educational career experiences such as the student assistant program. Tutoring students in the Grade School and Middle School has become a very im- portant part of our program. Also, students have recently become involved in assisting in the Special Education Department in the Grade School. Many other tasks and opportunities are involved which provide excellent expe- rience for any student interested in improving communica- tions and understanding between teachers and students, and to improve student—community and school-community relations. 77 40 _____P-R4 STANDING: M. It was held in place of a Prom and went over in a nice fashion. The dance was sponsored by the Junior class. The theme was Morning Has Broken. The Gym was decorated ap- propriately with a sun in the background of the band with multi-colored stream- ers on the outside. The name of the band was Plum Crazy. Many people attended the dance, and all enjoyed themselves. The week’s activities got underway with the preparation of floats, and the decorating of the gym. It was set off by the bonfire which followed the pep rally, which consisted of skits, honorary court, cheers, and the introduction of the foot- ball players. On September 28, a parade was held showing the floats made by the classes and clubs. The cheerleaders kept the spirit up for the big homecoming night. The Indians has a tough challenge that night as Verona upset the homecoming game. The dance brought many spirits back to life, as they danced until the Midnight Hour. The team members said they thought it would be a good season for them. Though the Indians only won one game they did play an excellent game against Waterloo--losing only by a soore of 6-3. This year was one of the best years we have had for a turnout at the football games. Though the team lost to McFarland, we had a record attendance of 130 loyal fans. Poynette had a new coach this year, Mr. Fogelsanger. He had the teams spirit at its highest even when they lost a game. The Indians rushed for 901 yards and 618 yards passing for a total of 1519 yards. They scored 77 points for the season. Danny Tomlinson ran back two kickoffs for touchdowns, gaining 165 yards. The J.V. team fought hard all season and never quit even though they only had seven players and very little height. Randy McNichol and Roger Stoltenberg did most of the scoring, usually on long jump shots. Dale Bakken, Mike Wal- ters, and Randy White did a good job, especially rebounding and against bigger opponents. Tom Palmer (manager turned player) and Jeff John- son came off the bench to help the starters when necessary. The season was a success even though it was not a winning one. Poynette scored 1031 total points this year, the ma- jority of the points being scored by Ed Scheider, and Roger Palmer--scoring 131 and 119 respectively. The Indians had many disappointing moments, though they did have their good moments also. These young men put in many months of practice, and hard work to prove themselves to be good sportsmen. Tomp- kins, J. Jay, J. Kutzke, Coach Harms, M. White. KNEELING: D. Manke, K. Glaskow, J. Alford, D. Zimmerman, K. Nelson, D. Onstad. SITTING: R. Elsing, B. Tomlinson, B. Onstad, R. Caldwell, D. Fisk. This year's wrestling team had an experienced head coach,Mr. Miller, and a new assistant coach, Mr. Harms. The Indians finished 5-7, but the record doesn't show all of the hard work these guys went through, (running, calis- thenics, losing weight, jumping, fundamentals). And finally the finished product, a group of little guys with a lot of muscle and a little Flower Power. As the season progressed and every one was more ex- perienced, they would try new moves, adding to the ones they had already learned at the beginning of the season. The Indians participated in a few Invitationals, and also hosted one. They did quite well in all. In the Marke- san, and Marshall Invitationals they had two seconds and thirds, and one fourth, and one first, well deserved. 94 95 ROCK ON VARSITY. BACK ROW: J. Robinson, Mr. Megow, B. Thiele. FRONT ROW: P. Jami- eson, R. Parpart, M. Gromnicki. J. V. BACK ROW: T. Webster, B. Mac- leish. FRONT ROW: R. Parpart. Mr. Me- gow, T. Dushek. With twelve young, enthusiastic players, the PHS curlers had a very successful season. The team did very well, con- sidering that this was its first year. The Junior Varsity had a rough year, but they tried very hard, and by next year should make a good showing. The regular season was quite successful for the varsity curlers. Throughout the Christmas vacation they hosted a bonspiel in which they didn't do as well as they had hoped; however, with that in the past, they went on gaining experience and knowledge. This was enough to win the regional playoffs, which gave them the right to go to the State. Congratulations to all of the varsity players. 96 ICE FOLLIES BACK ROW: T. Gunderson, K. Ziegler, K. On a Monday night in Arlington six rinks went against the Lodi girls. We won all six matches. The end of the season ended with a challenge for the boys. 97 in TH€ MOUS€ This year's curling season was a very successful one. There were thirty-two members, all willing and ready to compete. Every Wednesday night was the time when the competition began. The eight rinks that were drawn up this year felt that it was well worth the time spent. They hope for more participation and as successful a year next year. TOP ROW: M. Grominicki, B. Thiele. FOURTH ROW: J. Robinson, P. Sherer, D. Saager, T. Dushek, P. Jamieson. THIRD ROW: D. Olsen, W. Hall. On Wednesday and Thursday nights you could have seen the girls basketball team get into some tough and tumble practices. They took part in some good intermural games and come out on top only losing one game all sea- son. They held their games in the spacious Arlington Grade School Gymnasium. Under Mrs. LaFave’s supervision and high spirited coaching, they had a great year. Seeing it was the girls first year in this sport, they expect their membership of thirteen to increase in the coming years. 99 TAKE ME OUT TO TOP ROW: R. The team emphasized teamwork and unity in the team. Under Mr. Ritter's and Mr. Tomlinson's coaching the team did extremely well. There were a few new faces on the team this year, and we look forward to seeing many more new ones next year. 101 AIM HIGH BACK ROW: Mr. Dann, P. Johnson, B. Mielke, J. Dann. FRONT ROW: D. Zimmerman, K. Nelson, R. Onstad. The golf team had three returning letterman and four newcomers, which meant a pretty good season for the team. After many weeks of practic- ing in the gym, outside, and on the driving range, everyone went out to do his best in a game. With last year's experience and.this year’s practice, the boys really put it to- gether for a fantastic season. 102 SPLISH SPLASH PARTICIPANTS: D. Hilgendorf, P. Hebei, S. Olson, M. Hill, S. The water show entitled, It's a Small World, M went on as scheduled and was a big success. The girls all work- ed very hard to make it the best show ever. The swimmers enjoyed performing for the public as they performed and swam to music from other countries. Eight middle school girls also particiated in the show this year. How about some of you guys?? 103 FASTER THAN THE BACK ROW: W. Case, M. White, D. Saager, D. Hatha- ROW: P. Burgess, Mr. Megow, Mr. Schmidt. J. Craw- way, P. Jamieson, D. White. SECOND ROW: M. FIRST 104 SPEED OF LIGHT It may seem that as soon as the snow melts, so do the more popular sports, but the track team got busy right away for another very excit- ing season. Starting off with a new coach and several returning r ' ‘. lettermen, they got off with a good runnin' ’n jumpin' start. Seniors: Whitt Case, Jer- ry Johnson, Mike White, Dale Hathaway, Dennis Saa- ger, Paul Burgess and Peter Jamieson gave constructive pointers to newcomers on the team. Once they got off on the ’right track’ they had a good season. i.A ■ at ii KEEP ON TOP ROW: L. Volden. P. Buzzell, L. Patefield, S. ROW: A. Peter, G. Prucha, C. Luessman, T. Tomlin- Halversen, R. SECOND Girls’ track season is always plenty of work, but the main thing is that everyone who participates, enjoys what she does. The girls work continuously the year around to stay in shape. Girls' track is not only physically demanding but also mentally as well because of the pressure put on them by their coach, their peers, and most of all themsel- ves. The girls credited their doing so well to their fantastic coach, Mrs. Brooks. 106 TRUCKIN' ■ . . LADIES 107 SISS BOOM BAH! TOP ROW: C. Luessman, L. Schoeneberg, C. Calkins, T. Repka, N. The spirit rousers this year have kept up their school spirit with few excep- tions through some not-quite successful sports seasons. With their large number, they have urged and cheered on our girls, as well as our boys. Homecoming weak was bustling with activity as Pep Club decorated the gym for the Homecoming Dance. The constitution of the Lettermen’s Club was revi- sed this year under the supervision of the new officers. Officers this year were: Whitt Case, President: Ed. Sch- eider, V. President: Mike White, Sec.-Treasurer. The club also ran the games at Fun Night (Do we have a bet on red 31? There's 20 on double zero! And the roulette wheel comes up -1!) Other activities were: a steak fry (burn) and being hired as bouncers at a dance. All in all, the club had a busy year under the direction of its advisor, Mr. Garske. 109 TOP: B. Vangsnes. While most people were spending their summer sunning, six enthusiastic varsity cheerleaders were practicing for an exciting football season. Soon after, as football left us, and basketball came into view, we selected four more junior varsity cheerleaders to assist the crowd in backing the team. At about the same time, wrestling was on its way in, also; so they also needed four wrestling cheerleaders. With the ambi- tions and hard work of all fourteen girls, they did a fine job in leading the spirited crowds and teams to victory. ALL YOU INDIAN FANS! BACK ROW: K. Ziegler. K. Schultz, J.
